About two years ago I had a can of this beer and I thought it was the most disgusting thing on the face of this planet. And why people would want to drink a "pinecone" was beyond me. Of course, I didn't review it then, and I've garnered a bit more experience and respect for different styles. So here we are again, two years later.

Appearance : Absolutely gorgeous. The head is large and in charge, memory foam yellow, three fingers and doesn't descend for a good long while. When it does, it sits at about a finger, but you'd barely be able to tell because of the bountiful lace that covers like a dusty house. The body is a peach-amber glow, hazy and divine. 70% opaque from my view. This is a serious 4.75 out of 5. Just gorgeous.

Aroma : Tropical. Peaches, mangoes, and pineapple. Among those fruits is the trademark IPA armpit-like smell, but it's not too off-putting. Malts are fresh, churned, and slightly baked in the nose. Pretty on-par and not bad.

Taste : Yeah, this is pretty bitter and it packs a punch - but it's manageable. Very tropical in its abundance of hops, I've got peach and papaya here. Maybe a hint of stiff underripe pineapple. It ends fairly dirty, but the feel is clean. It lingers on with some dirt and grass, leaving a coating on the palate. This one is a sipper.

Feel : Creamy and abundant, but lively with carbonation. The end is stiff and woody, though clean; a bit parched and waves a dry goodbye. This feeling lingers on the back of the tongue.

Overall : A respectable IPA. Back then I couldn't distinguish styles and if something was bitter I'd just say it was bad. That's not the case anymore. I'd recommend Ranger to anyone looking for a STRONG, hop-heavy, tropical IPA with lots of dryness. That's what's presented here.

Doesn't smell like a hoppy IPA but it sure tastes like a good one.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a clear, deep, golden color with a quarter of a finger of white head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic, with lots of bright, floral, piney, citrusy, hops and bready, toasted malt, which imparted notes of freshly baked biscuits and French baguettes. I also get notes caramel, black pepper, coriander, clover and honey. Smells like an IPA.

Taste: For an IPA, this beer is quite nice. Yes, there are a lot of hops. Lots of floral, piney, citrusy, grassy, resin-like hops, but here is quite a bit of toasted malt to counter and balance the hops. Like the aroma, I get flavors of black pepper, coriander, clover and some honey and caramel-like sweetness. Really well balanced and tasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and nicely effervescent, as there is quite a bit of carbonation to tickle the taste buds and lift the hops over the palate. With an ABV of 6.5%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a nice, tasty, really well balanced IPA. Very drinkable and enjoyable. An IPA like Dogfish Head 60 Minute & 61, Founders All Day IPA, Great Lakes Spacewalker American Belgo, Oskar Blues Pinner, Sierra Nevada’s Nooner & Flipside, and Upslope’s Thai Style White IPA, this is one I like and can drink! Well done New Belgium!

Oh this is most pine flavour, with citrus and floral flavours not to bad at all.

A very good IPA. Nothing too special, and not my favorite, but still a beer that I could drink all day every day.

Poured into a mug. Pours orange amber with a fluffy white head. Smells of piney hops with citrus notes. Tastes of piney and earthy hops. Beer is light bodied and drinkable with nice hoppy bite. Overall a very good beer.

Excellent taste. I like the hoppy but still a little bitter vs the more citrus taste of many IPAs

Lacks the finesse of some of its counterparts, and even its brother Rampant, but it's fruity, has a nice bit of zing to it despite somewhat subdues hopping.

For a widely available IPA at a more than reasonable price, it's hard to go past when looking for a tasty session beer that won't cost a fortune or leave you too hammered.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to pint glass.

A: Clear deep golden to light amber. 1 finger of white head that leaves a coating of foam. Medium carbonation.
S: Mainly fruity: Pineapple, peach, a little orange, and some grapefruit rind. Not heavy on the pine. Like Rampant.
T: Very dank, earthy hops that give a flavor I find hard to describe. Nondescript citrus flavors also come through. Malts are not too strong. Not overly sweet. Could use just a bit more bitterness, and a bit more alcohol content.
M: Light side of medium. Nice finish.
O: Strikes me totally as the "little brother" of Rampant. Or vice-versa. It is easier drinking than Rampant, and doesn't suffer from being too sweet. Very nice easy-drinking IPA.

This a solid and very well balances IPA. It splits the difference well between piney and citrusy flavors. This is an IPA you could have several of without experiencing palate fatigue, but it has plenty of flavor as well. A really nice, solid, standard IPA.

Very piney in aroma and taste. Quite enjoyable with a nice bite to the carbonation.
Not super expensive which is nice.

I feel like this is a solid go-to if you don't want something
from the more expensive brands.

Another easy to find IPA that doesn't break the bank. New Belgium has only been in my area for the past few years and was strictly stuck on Fat Tire until I branched out. This is probably one of their better beers to me, ready to try Rampant and see what it's all about.

nice fruity (grapefruit, lemon, peach) combination of sweet and an easygoing light bitterness (a little piney and grassy). Particularly nice when it's hot. Going just on the mouthful, could convince me it was much lower abv.

Had a strong metallic aftertaste. It might've been due to the keg. Lots of fruity flavors. Not bad, but I'd try something else before grab I'd grab another one.

Surprisingly strong grapefruit aroma, strong bitterness, full body, medium complexity, very nice if you like strong IPAs; a positive surprise!
