12oz bottle. Pours a translucent light orange color with an inch of head. Lots of lacing. Aromas of citrus and grapefruit hops. Taste is a light grapefruit hop flavor with some citrus peel near the end. Nice amount of bitterness for a beer thats a bit on the light side. This is an easy drinking IPA for sure. Overall, worth buying again for certain.

On tap at "rookies" in Visalia ca

A: a pale burnt orange minimal head dissolved quickly a soggy lace

S: grapefruit some herbal notes

T: very fruity and spicy followed by pine then a metallic bitter finish

M:very drinkable and well carbonated it felt dense but maybe because of the great aroma and flavors this is loaded with

O: I enjoyed this I had this and lagunitas IPA last night I gave them the "head to head" challenge Ranger had them beat in the complexity of flavor and aroma, I only have one problem with this beer and that would be the after taste it had so much fruit and spice that the flat metallic bitter finish was to me disappointment.

16 oz tallboy into a pint glass

Ranger pours a nice copper color, very clear, a bit of chill haze with about a finger and a half of white head that has moderate retention but leaves behind some great lacing. The aroma is pleasant, earthy hops, grassy notes, a bit of cereal malt, some floral notes poke out too, nothing spectacular, but a solid example of a balanced IPA. Earthy bitter hops hit the tongue straight away, grassiness comes out as well with some light floral notes, citrus is absent, a bit of stronger malt on the tongue, good balance between the hops of malt, although some of the flavors from the hops are a bit missing and not in harmony, a bit too bitter considering the lack of flavor as well. The body is solid, nice carbonation, not too big and rich, not watery by any stretch, solid for the style.

Verdict: Solid IPA from New Belgium and of the best value IPAs on the market. This made from great drinking on my camping trip, and great drinking when I got home. It's not going to redefine the style or even stand out amongst the giants, but it's going to satisfy you every time.

Straight pour from 12oz pry-off bottle to my large HF glass (quickly becoming my favorite beer glass). Freshness date of June 24, 2012 printed in white ink on the bottom-right corner of the label (“24JUN12 204503”)

Appearance (4.5): This is some head on this beer. Rises quickly three fingers of very tight, fine, ivory-colored bubbles but fades to a respectable mound on the surface of the beer, leaving several rings and webby lacing all around. Body is a burnished golden color. Damn.

Smell (3.5): Bright pineapple and grapefruit lead the way, interlaced with a nice grassiness that I really respect. Some simple, bready malts underneath, but nothing sweet or particularly complex.

Taste (4.0): Strong piney-ness is the name of the game here, with some citrus pith and herbal grassiness mixed in. Nice biscuit character underneath, not overly complex but it does its job, and it works well. Yeast is very neutral, classic for the style. Hops almost get more intense and somewhat astringent as it warms, but I don’t mind.

Mouthfeel (4.5): This is quite nice, actually. The astringency of the piney hop character has an oily feel paired with it, and the carbonation is fine, evenly-distributed, and at just the right level of activity here. Meanwhile the body is on the lighter side of medium, and the beer finishes very dry. I dig it.

Overall (4.0): This is a really solid IPA, in my opinion. Would have liked to review a fresher bottle, but this is still damn good and hey—it is before the freshness date, so by that marker New Belgium did a very good job here. I love Ranger, I just wish I could get it in NY! I’d want cans in my fridge all the time . . . someday.
