look: 3.75 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Appearance - Pours a pale, clear copper with a finger width of bubbly white head.

Smell - Citrus hops, tropical fruit aromas, caramel malts, pine resin.

Taste - Bitter citrus hops accentuated by the sweetness of caramel malts, with notes of tropical fruit and pine.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Crisp, smooth finish with a lingering bitterness.

Overall - A solid American IPA by New Belgium. Excellent hop profile, definitely a winner amongst hopheads.

Welcome to Alberta, New Belgium. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance at long last. Of course one of the new arrivals is going to be an IPA. Ranger is a dark gold, perhaps just shy of light bronze ale with a decent amount of light beige head. Looks quite fizzy and light-bodied. Aroma is pleasantly herbal, fruity, and tangy, featuring a bouquet of grapefruit and orange, lychee, gooseberry, canned peaches, a hint of pineapple ... Nice fruity hop notes with a gentle caramel malt background. This IPA is rather refined, bold of flavor but not coarsely bitter, rather smooth, moderately medicinal, and notably fruity. Has one of the more pleasing gooseberry or currant flavors I've encountered in such a beer, rich and assertive, musty and spicy but not pungently catty. Also features faintly toasty malts, more peach and lychee fruit, melon, medicinal orange, and some pot resin that shows up late in the show. Mouthfeel is smooth, almost veering into creamy territory, a little soapy, on the lighter side for an IPA body-wise but this allows the hop flavors to shine through nicely. Not an obviously West Coast pine bomb and that's OK by me. Workmanlike but not devoid of some artistic flourishes. Recommended for the IPA lover and relative newcomer alike.

ranger IPA 6pk bottles $8.99(OH)

12 oz weird looking brown bottle poured into a pint glass. enjoy by date is marked in a small corner.

pours a clear golden color, almost two fingers of head that give way to some decent ring lacing. may be a tad over carbonated.

smells like your typical IPA but a little lighter. citrus, grapefruits and slight hint of oranges.

taste almost mirrors the smell. citrus, grapefruit and nice piney surroundings. it is on the bitter side, or rather more bitter than some other IPA's i have had.

the mouth feel is light to medium. more medium than light. feels good on the palate , slight dry mainly bitter finish.

overall not bad, not bad at all. better than some other IPA's i have had, however not as good as others in the same price point. i wasn't disappointed with it but i would prefer a commodore Perry over this any day.
