4.4/5  rDev +7.8%
look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Appearance: Pours pretty dark for the style (more like a porter) but makes up for that with a foamy cap that splashes inordinate amounts of lace around

Smell: Caramel and chocolate-dipped bananas with toasted wheat bread underneath

Taste: Caramel and wheat toast with bananas dusted with chocolate arriving in the mid-palate; after the swallow, peppery yeast phenols start to add complexity though the finish has plenty of caramel and banana

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body; rather creamy, with moderate carbonation

Overall: I suspect most of the bottles of this are long gone by now but I am glad I kept this in the back of the fridge for so long as the alcohol has tempered and it is drinking superbly

Today I had the best dunkelweizen I have ever had...what a great beer.Poured into my Brooklyn & Schneider Hopfen-Weisse glass a deep russett brown with a blooming cappuccino colored head that settled into a creamy froth after leaving multiple rings of scum behind, creamy is a great word to describe for many things about this beer.A great aroma with real assertive banana notes along with vanilla wafers, can someone say banana puddin? To go along with banana pudding notes a subtle clove and chocolate element comes into play aroma-wise.Mouthfeel is airy and full,it glides down with such ease honestly its scary.Flavors of bananas dipped in chocolate with a tinge of earth giving it an american twist, the clove-like spice is subtle.Wow what a great beer,Iam hop head to the core but when I drink a gem like this I know it,get yourself some of this.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a large, off-white head. The aroma is heavy on the wheat and roasted malt, with a little bit of pepper and cloves. The flavor is more of the same. I get some dark fruit, caramel malt, molasses, wheat and pepper. Very drinkable, with only a little bit of the 9 percent ABV showing. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice dunkelweizen and another good Lips of Faith beer.

Pours a mostly clear chocolate brown color with a big, foamy beige head. Aroma of banana, clove, caramel malts, chocolate, sweet bread, and spices. Flavor of banana, sweet bread, caramel, nuts, toast, mild spices, and brown sugar. Medium-bodied, with a good deal of soft carbonation and a sweet bready mouthfeel. Good dunkelweizen.

On-tap at the Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta.

Pours a slightly hazy dark brown color with a one-finger tan head. The head dissipates into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth dark malts with large amounts of overripe bananas. Also present are hints of indistinct spices and larger amounts of toffee.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth dark malts with a hint of wheat twang kick things off and are joined quickly by soft banana flavors. Midway through the sip very slight amounts of bruised pear flavors make an appearance before being run off by moderate amounts of earthy hops. Near the end of the sip the flavors sweeten with the addition of light toffee and deep caramel malts. The hops, dark malt, and caramel malts fade out into a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this was an easy-drinking version of the style that was heavier on the malt profile than most. Not as complex as the world-class examples but a nice beer nonetheless. Worth a shot.

(Served in a dimple mug)

A- This beer pours a dark dense brown body with a billowy off-white head that has a strong sea of carbonation that glides up through the body.

S- The dry hop note gives way to a dark melanoidin nougaty aroma with some soft yeasty note as the beer warms.

T- The wheat bread taste takes on some green plantain earthy yeast qualities and some roasted dark notes that are followed by a fresh bubble gum ester note that remains soft. The finish is a soft bread crust note that is pretty clean with a green hop snap to finish of the taste.

M- The mouthfeel is a medium-light texture with a soft fizz finish. There is no alcohol heat showing up in this beer.

O- This beer has a full dark wheat flavor with soft melanoidin qualities and softer yeast esters that add nice depth and are a bit different than the traditional hefe characters. The black pepper is very well hidden.

22oz. bottle with purple and gold label printed directly on the glass.

Served cool into a NB goblet, Dunkel Weiss is a very dark redish brown color with less than perfect clarity. The head is bone white with tight little bubbles. As it slowly settles, it leaves some nice lacing behind.

Aroma is really nice and surprisingly intense. Much like many German dark wheat ales, this one gives you those clove, banana, and bubblegum notes. In addition, there seems to be vanilla and caramel.

The flavor is again like a more intense traditional dunkelweizen. It has sweetness up front that leads to roasted malts and bitterness in the middle and finally finishes with that clove spiciness. It's really well balanced despite the strength and variety of flavors.

Mouthfeel is medium-plus body with creamy smooth carbonation. The alcohol is pretty well hidden for being a new bottle of 9% ABV.

Overall a really impressive version of this classic style. It may be one of the best Lips of Faith series beers I've had.

Bottle from Rileys in Madison. Really tasty stuff, above average mouthfeel. Great malting, with cocoa nibs and wheat. Was terrific appetizer for a good supper. Pours very dark brown. Very pleasant malt aromas. A little coca cola.Bannana, not much cloves.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into my Aventinus weizenbock glass. Surprisingly dark brown body, largely clear with faint auburn highlights and mahogany highlights. A small dark beige head anoints the surface. Delicate pasty lacing, shimmering legs, and decent retention.

Potent banana and bubble gum aromatics, with a touch of clove, and brandy dipped bread dough.

Ester-heavy flavor profile, with banana and hints of vanilla leading the way, balanced by a rich maltiness, a grainy, faintly tart wheat base, and a long spicy finish, owing I think to the addition of black pepper rather than yeast-derived phenols.

Alcohol is rather high for the style, making this decidedly more filling than rejuvenating, though the soft, pillowy, effervescent, medium-bodied feel is well done.

Interesting change of pace for the sour-heavy Lips of Faith series - wasn't expecting much, but this is pretty tasty actually.

Nice and dark pour, two fingers slight off white head, leaves a thick Styrofoam lacing.

Smells of ripe oranges and sweet malts

Oh man, mowed grass, salt lentil soup yum, banana, clove heavy, barley barley barley, and yes sir, citrus kicks and deep dark wheat and pinto beans. This is a killer unique flavor. Much better job than their bs attempt at Sahti.

Medium to heavy body with a mouthful of carbonation. Solid.

I would recommend this to the experimental drinker, its a unique drank son! Not sure how much I could put down tho, probably just the bomber.

A - dark mahogany pour with a massive rocky top head that sticks around... and to my face. Perfect presentation of a dunkel. I cant say Ive been more visually impressed by an American Dunkel.

S- Banana and clove, lightly roasted malts and bready wheat notes. Rich and hearty smelling. Very nice.

T- smooth and creamy malts up front that slowly fade, giving way to a light roasted bitterness. a very nice wheat heartiness throughout.Chocolate and Banana notes linger, with a touch of spice in the finish. A truly excellent beer.

M - nice full body without being overly rich and thick. Spot on for the style.

D - not a hint of the 9% ABV anywhere. I would drown myself in this stuff. The best American Dunkel i have had the opportunity to enjoy. Bravo! New Belgium.

22 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance-Deep dark brown in color with ruby highlights and brilliant clarity. Large Pale tan head slowly subsides with good retention and nice lacing.

Aroma-Smells like a typical dunkelweiss, only bigger. Rich, overripe banana esters and strong clove phenolics take charge, followed by bready wheat and light toast and chocolate. Some alcohol makes up the aroma as well. Background note of caramel/raisin/prune.

Flavor-Moist banana bread and moderate clove upfront, before mellowing to a quite complex malt (and even some hops!) profile. In steps malt character of bread, wheat, bread crusts, chocolate, and toast. Smoke phenolics combine with light earthy hops in the finish, which seems to go on and on forever. Flavor-wise, the alcohol is almost entirely imperceptible.

Mouthfeel-Medium full, silky smooth body. Moderate to moderately high carbonation. Some substantial alcohol warmth is the only place where the alcohol makes itself none.

I wish the carbonation had been a little higher, because then this beer may have been perfect. Bringing in a Dunkelweiss at 9%, I kinda expected a boozy mess, but the alcohol is all but imperceptible, and the flavor profile is complex, balanced, and delicious. Bravo.

Picked this up at Goebbel's in Wichita...

Pours chestnut with 4+ fingers of tan colored head. Above average head retention & lacing

S: Yeasty pepper, apricot, juicy fruit gum

T: Follows the nose, also over-ripe persimmons, a touch of brown bread, & green bananas up front. Green bananas, apricots & persimmons dominate as this warms along with phenolic spicyness to include cinnamon notes & much white pepper. Finishes spicy & fruitty & grainy with some gingerbread notes

MF: Medium bodied, low carbonation

Pretty good, but I found it a touch too spicy, the booze is well hidden in this one. Beware, this too easy to drink!

Poured very dark with some nice ruby highlights, a monster head, a belgian like 6 inches of creamyness that left tons of sticky lacing.

The smell was very german, big banana bread and clove with sweet dark raisony fruit.

The flavor is very full and complex with a nice big chocolate maltyness up front mixing in with bananas, dates, raisons, cherries and some spices along with a strong yeast character. The hops are a bit subdued, but are lingering in the background to balance out the sweetness a bit.

The mouthfeel has a dry powdery quality along with some nice carbonation.

Overall a pretty solid and enjoyable Dunkel.

Served from tap into an imperial pint glass. Poured a reddish brown with a one and a half finger very light tan head. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, clove, banana, alcohol, and a slight roastiness. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, clove, slight alcohol, and slight roastiness. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew and a very nice Dunkel. The aroma was quite nice and I really liked the slight alcohol aroma that it was giving off with the typical Hefe notes. The flavor was very nicely balanced and at 9% the alcohol was not palate invasive at all. For the style, this one is top-notch in my opinion. A definite must try.
