Served in tulip. Poured a lightly opaque black with a half-inch of khaki head that that had medium retention and lacing.

The aroma had a solid banana scent upfront with a solid grain profile in the background. There was also a slight bubblegum presence, and over the aroma was very nice. The flavors were very similar, banana, some bubblegum, earthy grains and a bit of yeast spiciness.

The body was full but light, was smooth and had a clean finish. Drinkability was very good, I could easily have 3 or 4 of these on a rainy Northwest afternoon. Overall, this was a very nice beer, one of the better offerings from a brewery that I mostly find to be average-ish. Certainly worth trying when you see it.

Pours a dark, cloudy brown with a huge, creamy light tan head that fades away slowly into a rich film that leaves foamy rings of lace.

The aroma is of banana nut bread, spice, full rich toffee, nutmeg, caramel and cloves.

The flavors follow with banana and clove esters peeking through a grainy, rich caramel and chocolate with notes of sweet toffee and black pepper on the finish.

Medium bodied, smooth and rich.

Delicious and balanced dunkle. Awesome.

The beer pours out deep walnut in color, clear, with a off-white head. The aroma off the beer is malty sweet with rich banana and clove esters prominent. Even though this is a Belgian take on a traditional German beer, New Belgium really nails the traditional German style characteristics. The taste of this beer is sweet up front, but it fades into a roasty chocolate and banana. The black pepper wasn't that strong on the taste. The drink of this beer is exceptionally nice.

Served in a 12 oz tulip glass. Poured a deep dark brown. Thin tan head that dissipated surprisingly quickly. Some lacing, but not much.

Smells of sweet banana, with hints of clove, and a little bit of brandy to remind you this is a 9% abv beer.

Tastes of sweet banana, with some bready malt. A little brandy-cough syrup in the background. Some hints of roasted goodness.

A creamy mouthfeel, with a warming sensation.

I enjoyed this beer, but think it would be much better on a cold winter days.
Very good for the style. Watch out for the ABV, it is hidden well.

Draft service into a long-stemmed fluted tulip glass at Churchill's in San Marcos.

A: Slightly hazy, dark garnet-tinted brown color with one finger of fine, light beige foam head. Moderate lacing remains on the glass.

S: Spicy, with cloves that stand out and also complement the mild roast. Yeast is also present, adding some contrasting brightness. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins off-dry, with nutty brown malt and yeast phenolics that are mild compared to the aroma. Fine tartness emerges in the soft bready middle that retains some nutshell and even mild chocolate roasted character. The finish is similarly soft, with cloves and fading dark fruit. No alcohol is detected.

M: Medium viscosity, balanced on the palate showing both acidic and coating aspects, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This is definitely one of the most unexpected styles to come out of the Lips of Faith series thus far, being neither sour, or barrel-aged, or even Belgian-inspired. In execution it is really good, bringing a focused but expected collection of sensory qualities to a beer that is deceptively easy-going at 9% abv. Although flavors can't quite live up to the intensity promised by the smell, this beer's different facets work together in a practiced--almost engineered--fashion. Doubly appropriate, considering its German pedigree.

Black, med. Pale tan head slowly shrinks to foamy ring and wisps, foamy lace.

Aroma is licorice, tar, toast, hint of clove.

Taste is black pepper, tar, prunes, dark whole wheat (esp in aftertaste), faint hint of licorice, strong clove, and spiciness. It has a hint of a weizenbock crossed with a Belgian ale esp. in yeastiness. It’s very good but not outstanding.

App- A nice deep dark garnet red with brown highlights. Nice on finger head, not too much lacing.

Smell- A yeasty dark, ripe, tart fruits.

Taste- Very sweet, Went another direction I was not expecting it too. The yeasty part was delicious and the dark fruits added a nice contrast.

Mouth- Medium body with a medium carbonation level. Sweet raisiny tastes. Left a similar taste to a quad.

Drink- Quite tasty. Well done and balanced. Nice spice with a good flavor profile.

Aroma is rich & fruity (sorry about that, but it's true!), mainly banana with tones of wheat and yeast and a strong hint of malt. It pours a dark, warm, chocolaty brown with a fine-bubbled, pale yellowish tan head. Mouth-filling flavor is malty, wheaty and yeasty with an undertone of banana and a hint of caramel. Thick, smooth, fizzy texture leaves a nice sharp and fairly persistent tingle.

On-tap at the Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta.

Pours a slightly hazy dark brown color with a one-finger tan head. The head dissipates into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth dark malts with large amounts of overripe bananas. Also present are hints of indistinct spices and larger amounts of toffee.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth dark malts with a hint of wheat twang kick things off and are joined quickly by soft banana flavors. Midway through the sip very slight amounts of bruised pear flavors make an appearance before being run off by moderate amounts of earthy hops. Near the end of the sip the flavors sweeten with the addition of light toffee and deep caramel malts. The hops, dark malt, and caramel malts fade out into a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this was an easy-drinking version of the style that was heavier on the malt profile than most. Not as complex as the world-class examples but a nice beer nonetheless. Worth a shot.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ

A: Pours a dark brown color with some red highlights and a creamy off-white head.

S: Banana overload is a good way to describe the nose. Intense banana ester with plenty of sweetness, dark fruits, caramel, and toffee. A fairly mild roasted malt note and a hint of cola.

T: Still lots of banana on the palate, but it's significantly more restrained. Sweet caramel malt and fruit notes along with some nice clove. There's just a tiny hint of creamy vanilla on the back end.

M: Medium to full in body with a really smooth and creamy carbonation and mouthfeel.

O: At 9%, I was a bit worried about this beer. Really great stuff, though.

on tap at barleys i was thrilled to be able to try this one instead of buying a bottle.

Poured a nice hazelnut brown, very clear, and with ample carbonation producing a nice two inch white foamy head. This quickly faded leaving behind nothing more then a thin film on top and a decent side glass lace presence. Very nice overall look though and there was definitely an unfiltered presence as the sediment was just well, settling down to the bottom. Aroma was full of wheat as one would expect from it. Lots of earthy and grain like tones that were mixed in with and accented very nicely by a bit of a yeasty presence. The aroma was slightly musty with a touch of a bready like quality, much thicker then I thought it would be.

Very nice here. A very rich full bodies flavor would be the best way to describe it. Normally I find wheat beers to always have the same overall flavor profile, however this one was a step up, and maybe due to the dark wheat. The flavor just seemed to come off as a bit more complex with a lot of earthy and grain like flavors. There was defiantly a lot of yeast and wheat mixed in and I even picked up the presence of some dark fruit like flavors. Overall very pleasing and a very nice palate about it. A nice smokey kind of flavor started to settle in towards the end of the session and almost gave it kind of a smoked presence in the finish. Very clean, but not as crisp as I would have thought. There was defiantly an underlying slickness to it. Some kind of slippery feel that kept it from having that clean cut off you normally get. It wasn't distracting at all, but rather served to prolng the flavor and give it a little more depth. The carbonation seemed to leave quickly and the last few sips did fall a tad bit flat. Very nice. This was light enough to be a consistent drinker without going overboard and boarding on too light. But the flavors were very well pronounced and defiantly left you with a good overall impression. This was defiantly a sessionable ale here and something I would not mind seeing in the fridge for a while.

On tap at my work. Pours a dark brown that looks ruby red when held up to light. Medium cream colored head that disappears quickly. Scent is like a sweet creamy dessert...it smells exactly like a banana split! I'm not even joking. That's all I can say about the smell. It's quite lovely actually. Taste is very sweet with dark malt and intense banana and clove flavors. Some hints of chocolate as well as tasty yeast and some light pepper. Alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is creamy and full bodied. Drinkability is high. Very tasty beer!

Enjoyed at Boone's on King Street Charleston SC. Served in a standard pint glass.
A: Dark with some ruby colors that shown through the beer as the light changed. Off-white head that left good lacing.

S: Banana, clove, alcohol.

T: Banana, chocolate, clove, alcohol, roasted malts and a slight pepper flavor round out this.

M: Medium to thick mouth feel. Perfect level of carbonation.

D: Not the type of beer you want a alot of at one time, the flavors and alcohol will get you.

Served from tap into an imperial pint glass. Poured a reddish brown with a one and a half finger very light tan head. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, clove, banana, alcohol, and a slight roastiness. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, clove, slight alcohol, and slight roastiness. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew and a very nice Dunkel. The aroma was quite nice and I really liked the slight alcohol aroma that it was giving off with the typical Hefe notes. The flavor was very nicely balanced and at 9% the alcohol was not palate invasive at all. For the style, this one is top-notch in my opinion. A definite must try.

On-tap at the Distillery in Savannah, GA on 2/5/11. Poured into a NB Globe.

A - Dark cola brown with a fluffy 3-finger bone-colored head. Retention is great, some streaky lacing is left on the glass.
S - Dark malt, roasted plantains, cloves, and caramel. Huge banana flavors on this, smells great!
T - Very close to the nose, dark roasted banana or plantains dominate with cloves, bubblegum, and a heaping caramel malt backbone. Probably the "roastiest", most banana-forward Dunkelweizen I've had.
M - Smooth and creamy with a medium body and prickly carbonation.
D - Nicely drinkable, but the high ABV would keep this from being sessionable.

Appearance: Pours pretty dark for the style (more like a porter) but makes up for that with a foamy cap that splashes inordinate amounts of lace around

Smell: Caramel and chocolate-dipped bananas with toasted wheat bread underneath

Taste: Caramel and wheat toast with bananas dusted with chocolate arriving in the mid-palate; after the swallow, peppery yeast phenols start to add complexity though the finish has plenty of caramel and banana

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body; rather creamy, with moderate carbonation

Overall: I suspect most of the bottles of this are long gone by now but I am glad I kept this in the back of the fridge for so long as the alcohol has tempered and it is drinking superbly

From 22oz bomber to Mikasa Weizen glass

The brew is dark brown in color as the pour forms a rich, fluffy, two-inch head that leaves lacing all over the glass. I love these Mikasa glasses because I can fit a full bomber in one pour.

The nose is rich, ripe fruit, especially bananas and raisins, accented by holiday spices, especially nutmeg and clove. Touches of alcohol warmth poke through.

The flavors follow but there's a lot more toffee and toasty malts than the nose. The bananas and cloves are there, but a distinct note of cracked pepper truncates any lingering sweetness. And it dries this palate. Yeah, interesting flavor profile. Alcohol is far more masked than expected, especially given the rich, penetrating complexion. Finishes short and balanced.

Honestly, this is one of the best examples of the style I've come across. Stays true to the expected dunkel flavors but spruces things up a bit - sweet aspects are accented by drying spice; the mouthfeel is rich and chewy. Nice job once again with the Lips of Faith series once again.

Pours a red-tinged dark brown, plenty of colour to it, with very nice beige head; fairly pale with nice density, sinks slowly but surely to a thin crown of bubbles with some wonderful lacing left behind. Looks pretty damn great.

Smells a bit completely insane. Massive weizen esters, but leaning heavily on the candy banana side, with huge banana sweetness. Also an equally odd side-note of smoke, with some bacon and charred wood, and maybe some peach in the mix as well. Totally didn't expect that, and I'm glad. Quite fascinating, I'm glad it blind-sided me but still, it's a bit too odd for me to love it.

Taste starts out banana cake-esque, there's plenty of that weizeny banana flavour but also a gooey sweet cake batter note with hints of butter and caramel. Not really a lot of dark notes which is a bit incongruous with the look and style, and it really just ends up fruity with more of that seed-heavy banana note. If I were a banana fan I might like it, but A) I'm not, and B) I'm also disappointed that there seems so little else to it, especially given the intrigue of the nose.

Not a bad feel, with a bit of body to it, slightly dry at the back and a bit heavy. Not bad.

Too much banana. What's great about good weizens is the balance between fruit and spice, and there's really a want of spice here. Decent brew, but a bit one-note.

THis is one great beer. A beefed up American take on a Dunkle. It works!!! Very impressive.

Poured into a Budweiser select pilsner glass. Looks murky and brown but when held to a light, it is all amber and ruby highlights. Nice size antique white head / good retention and some lacing.

Aroma is outstanding. Heavy duty hefe aromas, cloves and banana and yeast. Also some pepper and bready malts.

Taste is great as well. A dark hefe on steroids. The hefe elements are prominent. Good use of the banana/yeast/cloves combo that makes a hefe so inviting. In addition there is a hearty blend of bready malts and some pepper and alcohol presence reminiscent of a good Belgian beer.

Mouthfeel is a good bit less light than a traditional Dunkel. This is a 9% abv beer. Stronger feel and some alcohol presence above and beyond a normal Dunkel. Does it work? Hell yes!!! This is a great beer.

Overall very impressive. I would drink this one again.

A- Pours a very dark and clear ruby red with some brown and black highlights. The light brown head is very creamy and slowly settles to a thin covering.

S- A lot of caramel, toffee, oats, flowers, honey, nutmeg, black cherries, and alcohol. Crazy complex. I love it.

T- Same as the aroma but the alcohol definitely has a harsh presence which definitely cut down the complexity.

M- A very nice carbonation presence but the alcohol harshness makes it a bit hot on the finish.

O- A very nice smelling beer but the drinkability suffers from the noticeable alcohol content. That being said, this is an extraordinarily well-made beer.

Big 22oz. serigraphed bottle. No wheat glasses on hand, so I used a standard tasting glass. The bottle reads "Cat-burglar-smooth and just as fond of the dark, Dunkel Weiss sneaks together wheat and barley malts with a pinch of black pepper." The only other beer I know that uses black pepper is Knot Stock.

Appearance when pouring is a chestnut brown, but in the glass it literally turns a black color. Very dark, but I can tell when it is held up to light the beer is very clear and filtered. The head is a substantial rocky beige color that crackles away at first but settles down into a soft pillowy head. It has a decent head retention. This is the darkest I have ever seen a Dunkelweizen and certainly, the most filtered I have ever seen a dweizen as well. It misses more points for this departure from the tradition, but where it missed, it made up for with strong character.

The aroma is also a slight departure from what is standard in a D.weizen. BIG and bold aromas leap out of the glass, mostly of ripened banana and to a lesser extent cloves. This intense aroma is uncharacteristically strong for the dark wheat style. Softer elements show through beyond the abrasive banana and clove smell: cocoa powder, fig, and honey. not unpleasant at all, but slightly over the top for what a dunkelweizen should be.

The taste is on the sweeter side, with a nice complimentary spiciness from the yeast. Quite pleasant. Very flavorful and robust. There is some chocolate up front, soft but present, followed by a sweetness towards the swallow that has a ripened fruit quality. The finish has a considerable amount of pepper spice and clove notes from the yeast, which round out the sweetness very nicely. I am surprised by this beer's flavor...very well designed.

The mouthfeel is a miss. The carbonation is just not enough for a dunkelweizen. Maybe it is the very high alcohol, but the beer feels heavy and almost slick. The alcohol leaves a twinge, but otherwise that is not coming off as highly carbonated.

The overall impression of this beer is that we have an American brewery recreating a classic German beer style to suit American consumers needs. WAY over the top with appearance, aroma, and flavor. Not to mention alcohol! Sure there may be some German breweries that have high octane beers, but a South German dunkelweizen is a subtle yet different approach to a hefeweizen. This is an altogether different beast, what with the addition of black pepper and 9% abv. Would I drink it again? Sure I would. I would not offer it up as a great example of the style, but I would certainly use this for a food pairing beer!

Review from 2/2011 notes. Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a dark, clear red amber. Minimal head, but a bit of lacing. Wheat, malt and slighly sour aroma. Light malt and dark fruits to start, then lighter fruits with a distinct banana flavor. Finishes with the pepper, light malt and slight hops. Weizen wheat in the finish. Interesting flavor progression. It seemed a little subdued at first, but quite nicely done and interesting. Must try again.

New Belgium's LoF dunkelweizen is a weizenbock by another name with a prominent black pepper spiciness added to the recipe. While I don't think this overabundance of that particular spice contributes much to the flavors in a dunkelweiss (or weizenbock), the team at New Belgium has otherwise crafted a solid dark weizenbock that I wouldn't mind having again (though in smaller bottles would be nicer) once in a while.

Pours a tall (>3cm), tan head that lasts for a few minutes before descending to a perpetual cap (0.5cm) atop the beer. Leaves some small amounts of lacing along the sides of the glass. Body is a very dark brown when out of the light, but a transparent mahogany wood-finish color that is mineral-red accented. Carbonation not readily visible.

Very strong, pleasant aroma of musty bananas, some nuttiness, slight bit of roasted and chocolate malts, black pepper, with a solid backbone of dark barley and wheat malt mash sweetness. Probably one of the better weizen ale aromas I have smelled: if it had some cinnamon, nutmeg, or clove oil component this would be perfect.

Taste opens with some very dark, deep wheat malt sweetnes that's somewhat overshadowed by a black pepper component. Caramel and wheat malt sweetness increase just beyond this, and upon reaching mid-palate, there is a small explosion of flavors: black pepper, old banana, pie spice. The spiciness is good in a wheat ale, but the taste of black pepper outweighs banana and pie spices and diminishes my overall enjoyment of the beer. Taste fades out with some creamy banana, vanilla, and dark malt flavors for an excellent close. Aftertaste is of residual black pepper, banana, and some tartness.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy bodied with a substantial, fizzy carbonation. A bit heavy for a dunkelweizen, but just about right for a weizenbock. Which is it? Slight alcohol burn in the back of the throat, with a dry finish.
