T: Fruit, primarily pear with some tropical notes over light malts.

It pours a rich looking faded copper orange color. It's not a clear beer at all, unless it's just a chilled haze I'm seeing. Very cloudy. There is no head whatsoever. A few bubbles are up top, but it's hard to call this a head. Too bad too because it's a very rich looking pale ale style beer.

Something gives this an odd smell. It's not a bad smell, but it's very odd. It could be the pear juice, but I think it's the Belgian yeast. It's funky smelling. More than anything, with the high ABV and fruit juice, it smells like a cocktail.

I always try to explain to people that aren't craft beer fans that fruity beers aren't necessarily normal beers with fruit juice added. Unfortunately, this is exactly that. It's basically a mediocre beer with fruit juice added. Because of that, the flavors don't work well together, they kind of cause problems.

Sometimes a lot of different ingredients, scents, flavors provide complexity. This doesn't. There's no cohesion. It's sweet, very tart, bitter, warming, but each of those feels tries to be the star instead of working together. Very similar to some krieks that I've almost had to pour down the drain.

A bit too funky for me. Nothing works, lots of rough edges. Not smooth. Rough around the edges.

Appearance: Pours a murky amber color with a splashy, but limited, head of foam; quite a few strands of lacing

Smell: Shortbread and pear juice

Taste: Shortbread malt flavors dominate the front end, with the pear juice building into the middle; spicy yeast phenols dominate the finish; bringing a peppery and slightly herbal character; caramel joins the malt bill, in the finish, but there is also a surprising degree of tartness in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; some warmth in the gullet

Overall: A couple of years in the bottle have tamed down this beer but I can't help but imagine that it would have been better had it started out with a lower opening gravity

Appearance: A deep gold, if not light copper. Like tupelo honey. Somewhat translucent with a little sediment probably from the Saison yeast.

Smell: Very fruity, bready smell. Very reminiscent of its older cousin, Fat Tire. Has a subtle hint of the funk that comes from a lot of Belgian-style beers, but at the backend of the nose. The fruit and earthy qualities are the immediate and best reaction to the nose.

Taste: Decently balanced for how much is going on in the beer. It has a lot of characteristics indicative of a lot of styles. That’s its greatest weakness. I’m not certain the Amber backbone is paired extremely well with the pears and other fruit flavors. But it is certainly still a pleasure to drink. The spices and gingery tastes, common in many Belgian strongs, linger after the liquid has actually left your mouth for a long time. It’s a very strong finish. A little bit of the 10% abv comes out in the taste. But it’s a charming booziness, much like a favorite Uncle on Thanksgiving.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth. Very easy on newcomers to Belgian styles. Won’t be grossed out by too much flotsam. Has a lightness and crispness to it that will pair well with a summer day.

Overall: I really enjoyed this beer for what it was. Again, the balance is a little weird in the taste. Definitely an improvement on a pretty boring beer: Fat Tire. I wouldn’t go out of my way to look for it, but I would probably buy it again if it popped up and my pocketbook was feeling heavier than normal. I don’t think I’d really like to drink more than one at a time. So, grab a 22 oz. and share it with a friend.

bomber purchased for roughly $10. poured into wine glass

look is a cloudy amber gold with a small film(the head of the beer). smell is ripe fruit, pears, apple bubble gum, yeast. taste is over-ripe fruit, more apple and pear, sweet candied malts, hops are lost in the translation. alcohol is hidden well for 10%

well made but not my style. if you enjoyed baltika #9, you'll love this

"Our 20th anniversary! Let's roll a bunch of New Belgium together and put it in a bottle, start with the backbone of Fat Tire, but double the malt and hops; add in asian pear juice, a very Belgian thing to do; and bring it to life with a Saison yeast. It's New Belgium Super Cru from us to you! Brewed in the style of a Belgian Strong Pale Ale.

Served in a New Belgium Globe snifter. Served north of 45º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a copper-tinged cream head of a thick frothy consistency over a very hazy copper amber body with ample carbonation. Lacing is light and stringy and retention is average at best. A decent appearance but could do much better. 3.25

(Smell) Aroma is strong with a tart fruit juice forward, biscuity malts, a pinch of ginger spice and pepper and a subtle earthy hop backbone. Fruit juice comes off strong, very central to the aroma of this beer, and the touch of funk is a distinctive twist for a perceptible sourness. Malt character pales significantly by comparison. I'm not blown away by the aroma, it comes off a bit overdone in the wrong places and underdone in other spots. There are some notable astringencies that I could only deduce in this stage, none of them were appetizing in nature. 3

(Taste) The balance is a bit better balanced in the flavor, with a moderate, biscuity malt character, relatively clean, a dash of standard Belgian spices like coriander and pepper, a nod to citrusy hop character and a still strong, still forward pear juice concentrate for a very dry and very acidic finish. The combination of acidic fruit juice and strong spice profile compared to a biscuity, moderate malt character makes this one very dry Belgian Ale. I didn't really enjoy the balance in this beer as much as I had hoped to- hopefully it's just an old batch but the flavor isn't extraordinary by any stretch. 3.25

(Mouthfeel) Mouth is slightly sweet with juicy sugars, but wraps up with a dry acidic finish paired with a forward Belgian spice profile. Carbonation is fuzzy and provides a subtle airy texture. Alcohol is medium/high, quite perceptible in this beer and not hidden by much body. The body itself is a medium+ amongst the style and medium/high overall. While the carbonation and texture was decent, the alcohol could have been a bit better hidden and the body didn't do a good job at keeping it under wraps. 3

(Overall) Super Cru plays around with a popular style but comes out somewhere in the middle. I enjoyed the pear juice twist but found it too distracting and the malt body was a bit too plain and transparent by comparison. Not bad for an experiment but overall it didn't impress me all that much and doesn't warrant a repeat visit from me. 3.25

No head really on a murky orange and golden body with some lacing. Aroma of juniper, fresh flowers, orange peel, Belgian yeast and some candy sugar. Well the flavor is a little sour up front but smooths out quickly and finishes slight tart and mildly sweet. The one tastes like one of those multi fruit minute made fruit juices. Very tropical with mostly pineapple and tangerine with some peach. Belgian character is understated. Medium to thick body and moderate carbonation. This one is pretty unidimensional and hardly Belgian. This series has disappointed me again.

A - Pours with a small head of white foam on top of a hazy, dark copper colored body. The head fades quickly and leaves little lace.

S - A fruity aroma of orange, clove, and banana backed by toffee malt notes.

T - Thick malt up front with pithy lemon and clove. Some pepper and more lemon in the middle. Finishes with pepper, clove, lemon and some spicy hops.

M - Medium-thick body, moderately high carbonation, and a somewhat malty finish.

D - Flabby and muddy, the yeast character is pungent but not particularly good. There is both a lack of crispness and a somewhat harsh bittering component to this beer. I'm not sure quite what they were hoping for here but they don't seem to have pulled it off.

A: Poured aggressively, but still resulted in very little head at all. Cloudy appearance, with a dark golden color.

S: Strong smell of saison yeast. As it warms, hints of the pear juice become far more evident. Definte sweet, Belgian scents

T: initial taste is also the most overwhelming, which is a strong flavor of yeasty Saison. As it warms the malty sugar taste arrives and it finishes with a pear juice taste that leaves as quickly and abruptly as it arrives.

M: Pretty light in body, sweet and a pretty dry with very little carbonation. Ok

O: Overall I appreciate this for it uniqueness, but it's just ok for me. I would definitely recommend letting it warm a bit before drinking.

Light fizzy head, coppery orange hazy color.

Nose sweet malts, stone fruity, caramel, toffee, juicy, bit of esters and some sweet candy sugar, bit of booze.

Taste light sweet reddish malt, toasty cereal malt, light caramel, bit of stone fruity and esters, a strange spicy heat with tingly booze, light phenolic flavors coming with the sweet candi sugar. finish is a bit drier, more heat, tingly burn with little acidity and more esters and Belgian candi flavors, toffee as well.

Mouth med bod decent carb, plenty of booze.

Overall ok but not great, decent flavors that seemed to have gone a bit out of control with too big esters and phenolic flavors, although they should be there just seem a bit too much, and too boozy, just too much going on with this it wasn't really sure where it wanted to be.

Aged for 1 year on my closet floor. Review from notes.

A: Pours a hazy amber color. Not much head.

N: Sweet malts, some pear. At this point I'm worried that the beer will be too sweet.

T/M: Some sweet malts up front. Hops and pear have faded into this really nice, tannic-tasting pear flavor, like pear peel. Boozy.

O: I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It aged really well.

A - Bright apricot body. Fine white head has ok retention and lace.

S - Great caramel malt nose with edges of blackberry cobbler and booze.

T - Lively carbonation cuts through a sweet honey opening. Rich caramel, pear, and cranberry center. Quick, dry finish.

M - Smooth, medium/full body.

O - A delicious brew. The booze will sneak up on you.

Picked this 22oz. bottle up at Ye Old Spirit Shop in Frederick, MD a little over a year ago. Has been cellared at ~65º f. since I bought it.

Look: Poured a brilliant orangeish amber color with some clarity to it. The head was beige 1-finger of frothy foam. Lacing was not too prominent but the alcohol legs were everywhere! Carbonation bubbles were just not happening.

Smell: Tart notes of apple and pear. Very sour nose. The apple Jolly Rancher reference on New Belgium’s website is spot on.

Taste: First off was a sour note of orchard fruit. Then a Belgian funk set in towards the middle. The finish had a dry white wine character with a lingering sour note.

I found this as a real treat. The Belgian twang seemed to mesh perfectly with the sour component from the Asian pear juice. Unfortunately I can’t speak to how cellaring affected the palate, but is certainly didn’t hurt it. I can say the 10% ABV was virtually undetectable.

A - A standard pour yields two plus fingers worth of billowing fluffy golden khaki colored head... Modest retention gives way to a full velvety lacing... The color is an inviting honey hued amber... Only a slight bit of sluggish to moderate paced carbonation can be seen deep within under close investigation...

S - Interesting aroma... The requisite Belgian yeast is present, but rather subdued... Candied sugars... Bubble gum... Pears... Perhaps even a touch of sweet potatoes... An odd yet inviting mix that yields something slightly different with each and every whiff...

T - The nose didn't lie... Lots of candied sugars... A hint of bubble gum... Belgian yeast... Pears... Vegetable broth... A slight alcohol presence as well...

M - Dense... Medium bodied... Sleek... Brisk carbonation... A bit sticky... A slight alcohol induced burn rises on the deep finish and lingers for a bit...

D - A solid beer, but not much more than that... This one takes some risks which are appreciated, but the end result is an average at best offering... Compared to its Belgian Strong Pale Ale brethren this one pales in comparison... The 10% ABV is a bit heavy handed, especially given that the overall enjoyment is a bit lacking...

First of all this is not a Belgian Strong Pale. It's a sour. Old bruin or Flanders Red.

I'm at Merchant (Madison) for happy hour and. I'm kicking myself for having brushed my teeth before coming. Pretty sure it's ruined this beer. Had it here a week ago and loved it, but I was too drunk to review it.

On tap in a London pint, it's a beautiful cloudy orange amber. The aroma isn't really there. (Note: fried cheese curds arrive, should help with the tooth paste problem.)

Sadly the flavor doesn't improve. It's a muddle of tart yeast, barnyard musk, and bread. The overriding problem (if not the toothpaste) is a sickening sweetness.

What's wrong with me? I loved this a week ago. And I loved La Folie from a bottle. I have to suspect the tooth paste. What a shame!

My borscht and vodka have arrived. Maybe that will help...

20th Anniversary Ale, aged 1 year, enjoyed on New Belgium's 21st Birthday!

SuperCru pours a clear, ruby color, and is capped a light, off-white head that provides spotty lacing. A fruity nose, mostly pear, mixes well with some roasty malt notes. A high level level of sweet malt, along with some roastiness, is followed by sweetness from the pear juice, and finishes somewhat dry with hints of alcohol lingering. Moderately carbonated, SuperCru is medium in body.

Beer served in a snifter, beer is yellow / amber and mostly clear with almost no head, decent retention, no lacing moderate to low carbonation.

Aroma is yeasty, bready, estery, sweet, smells like a Belgian ale.

Beer is medium to light in body, sweet and a little dry on the end, it is a decent beer, not great but a nice big Belgian ale. I might even have it again.

Good, but not great. Poured at a good temperature with a nice, foamy, tan head that soon settled and a little lace. Color is a clear orange amber with plenty of tiny bubble trails. Aroma is somewhat muted, but with yeast, bread dough, malt, hint of fruit. Flavor's similar to nose; good balance between sweet malt and yeast products, carbonic tang, and hop/yeast bitter. Body is good; ditto carbonation. Finish is like flavor with tang and alcohol warmth finishing.

A bomber bottle from The Wine Source.

A: The ale is a hazy orange amber, on the verge of opacity but not all the way across the line. A white head, thin, pops op on first pour but doesn't amount to much - just a few stray patches.

S: The pear sweetness, sugary, stands out, dominating the rest of the body. What's there is Belgian, yeasty and fruity with a bit of a hop edge. Those nobler aspects are a nice finish to the nose. Before that, the pear juice and saison yeast are in control.

T: The mustiness jumps out early, the yeast combining with the pear juice for a prickly sweet body. Light caramel adds body. The hops, sharper in the nose, are present but more relaxed. They add an herbal flowery flavor -- bitter but not overpowering. The pear juice accentuates the saison aspect, drawing more fruitiness out of the ale. Dryness builds, thanks to the yeast, leaving some peppery flavors alongside the hops and pears. Perhaps so much going on weighs on the beer. It's not quite a saison but it's not quite anything else either.

M: Sweet, hoppy, juicy, musty. Plenty of adjectives describe the ale but nothing ever comes together nicely.

Slightly hazy copper in color Almost no head to speak of. It was gone before I even got my nose in it.

Fruity, saison style spiciness in the aroma. Herbal, boozy. Can definitely pick up the pear juice.

Starts out a bit tart. Fruity & floral before giving way to a little thick malty sweetness with some boozy alcohol. A hint of yeasty spiciness. Just a big strong beer with some fruity and funky characteristics.

Thick, syrupy, medium to full body. soft carbonation. A little heat as it warms. I don't know how i feel about it. It's ok. It's different and not really what I was expecting. The first sip was very tart and caught me off guard. The flavors here aren't too complex.

Poured from the bottle into my Chimay goblet.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy reddish amber with a finger of off white head. The head goes away completely and the color looks artificial.

Smell: Sweet and fruity with lots of malt and some Belgian yeast.

Taste: Some fruit and Belgian yeast with a bunch of malt. The finish is a bit wine like. I'm not really digging the combination of flavors here. There seems to be some champagne like qualities here too. The finish is a bit boozy.

Mouthfeel: The body is a bit syrupy with strong carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Overall: Not a very big fan of this beer. I don't think I would have any more.

Straight pour from 22oz pry-off bottle to a Belgian Independence Day tulip; bottling date of April 14, 2011 (“4-14-2011 110414041”) printed near the bottom of the bottle.

Appearance (4.0): Oooh, what a pretty pour! The body is the color of clover honey with a perfectly integrated haze—a hazy body cannot look better than that. Head pops up to a bit over two fingers, off-white, with fine bubbles and recedes relatively quickly to half a finger. Not a lot of lacing going on, but the body and head make up for that.

Smell (4.0): Nice yeasty spiciness, matched evenly with the sweetness of fruit juice—almost like apple juice, so I’m assuming that’s the ghost of Asian pears invading my nostrils. I like it, though. That fruity character is laced with a slightly tart funk, which nice and musty, too. Doesn’t necessarily fit the BSPA profile but personally I’m getting a kick out of it.

Taste (4.0): There is . . . a lot happening. Yeast spice (nicely integrated), some very horsey funk (much appreciated), moderate fruitiness that resembles a tangy-er* pear flavor, tart bretty characteristics that mesh with the fruit and spice surprisingly well (I don’t know how it managed to link them, but it did), and a bit of booze coursing through it all. It finishes dry and slightly grassy / herbal, but if there’s any real hop presence it’s pretty faint—this is more a product of yeast and booze. Personally, I enjoy this Belgian-inspired circus of flavors, but I understand how some people might not.

Mouthfeel (3.0): Better than average, but not by a whole hell of a lot. Carbonation is nice but subtle: smooth with very fine tingling, but not as much of a presence as I’d like—especially for the style. Body is on the thick side of medium and has a slightly syrupy quality to it, but fortunately the alcohol dries it out considerably in the finish.

Overall (4.0): If you’re going to drink this, you’d be a fool to expect a standard BSPA. Right on the bottle it says it’s a double recipe of Fat Tire, with Asian Pear juice mixed in and fermented with saison yeast (of the funky variety). Don’t expect something “to style.” If you’re looking for something interesting and different, and enjoy a bit of funk, you’re going to appreciate this beer a bit more. I applaud New Belgium’s efforts to create something unique, and I have definitely enjoyed this beer!

*First I wrote “tangier” but I thought that’d be confusing at first glance to anyone with a sense of geography.

Bomber poured into my large Gulden Draak tulip, New Belgium's Grand Cru is bright copper with an off-white head leaving scattered lace.

Smell is on the fruity ester sides, a little overripe banana reminiscent to me of an over aged blonde, and some sourish citrus.

Taste is heavy on the old blonde side that I don't care for (I don't know when this came out or remember when I bought it, but it was a the front of my cellar). The pear is somewhat notable, mostly the acidic citrus, but it's mostly the esters and broken down malt. A hint of snappy, herbal hops helps.

Mouthfeel is dry, acidic, medium bodied.

Drinkability isn't too high to me. It taste like an over-aged trippel. Maybe just the pear juice. Regardless, not digging it.
