Poured from a freshness dated bottle: nearly opaque black with a slowly dissipating off-white head; quit a bit of lacing on the glass.
This is perhaps the most strongly aromatic ales I have had in a long time. The hop aroma simply explodes from the bottle and the glass. It is almost enough to tickle the nostrils. No citrus here, but a strong abrasive piney and rye aroma greets the olfactory at the expense of everything
else - still, quite impressive.
By comparison the hop flavor is rather restrained with a taste of husky wheat and some licorice. There are faint hints of molasses as well as a rye flavor. The roastiness is also faint. There is a nice coating of hop bitters left on the palate. Overall, the flavors just don't come together, though it is enjoyable and somewhat unique.
I found the body to be a little too thin with higher than needed carbonation. The mouthfeel is clean with the aforementioned bitterness on the palate.
Another nice experimental ale from a good brewery, though I am not familiar with the "American Black ale" style. I'll have to try a few others before I pass judgement on the style.
