Poured from a 12-oz. bottle into a snifter.
A - One finger of light tan head. Tight bubbles with good retention. Body is deep ruby and brown. Lots of lacing.
S - Herbal, piney, resinous hops. Hints of chocolate and brown bread. Crisp, slightly spicy wheat notes in the background. Interestingly, I also get a definite savory, vegetable soup aroma (possibly a contribution from the midnight wheat?).
T - Warm and toasty like sitting in front of a fireplace during the biggest storm of the year. Baking chocolate, toast and mildly sweet espresso notes come through up front along with a good wallop of hops. The piney hops definitely add to the "wintery" character of this beer. The cocoa flavor mingles with a sweeter honey-like flavor, rounding out a smooth, balanced malt body. Hops do not disappoint as they are present all the way through the finish with a nice bitter kick to the tongue.
M - Medium body with mild but smooth carbonation.
