I had purchased this bottle during my most recent visit to my aunt & uncle in DC and put it aside awaiting a slow moment. I just returned from Christmas dinner and things could not be slower at Abbaye de Chandler aka Chez Woody.

From the bottle: "Peter picked a prickly pear and paired it with a passion fruit. 'Perfect! Pitch it in!' he proclaimed. Now we have this pleasing Prickly Passion Saison brewed with fruit juices and French Saison yeast to our brewmaster's picking."

I was interested while watching the cascading action of my pour eventually result in two-plus fingers of fizzy, tawny head with surprisingly good retention. The nose had the unmistakable mustiness of Saison yeast, but it also included a sweet fruitiness not wholly unlike bubble gum. Color was a hazy deep-amber. Mouthfeel was kind of on the effervescent/fizzy side and the taste was quite sweet, very fruity which cut some of the mustiness of the yeast. Finish was likewise sweet, but not cloying. The fruit juice(s) commingled nicely with the yeast to produce a very drinkable beer.

Poured from bottle into tulip. Pours a hazy orange with thick foam and good lacing. Smells sweeter than most brews, belgian yeasts, banana and sweet fruit. Taste is of sweet belgian yeast with fruity and peppery notes.
Its obviously not a brew trying to win any awards, but its delicious, fun, and most importantly different and innovative. Nice brew.

On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours a golden amber color with good head retention and considerable lacing. The is attractive, showcasing some honey, citrus, tropical fruit and a hint of vanilla. The flavor profile replicates the nose in this moderately sweet beer, Though there's also some light butter on the palate, and there's a hint of bitterness on the finish as well. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fairly long, tropical fruit finish. Alcohol is well disguised, and I was surprised to see the 8.5% abv.

While nothing extraordinary, this was still aa pretty tasty beer I thought.

22oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a clear golden brown with a nice white head that fades to a small layering and leaves some lacing on the glass.

S: The nose is pretty inviting. The typical Saison aromas are there with notes of lemon zest and fruity esters along with a passion fruit sweetness.

T: Wow this thing is pretty sweet but it works. The fruit juices are at the forefront with a nice sweetness which is followed by the clove and esters from the Saison yeast.

M: The feel is medium bodied and only slightly drying on the finish.

O: The was tasty and an interesting take on a Saison. Definitely not traditional but I appreciate what they did here. I'd drink it again for sure...I may grab another and lay it down for a while to see how it develops.

22 oz. bomber from Westpark Beer and Wine, Richmond, VA. Purchased after New Belgium "Beer Theater" featuring NB brewmaster Peter Bouckaert.

Pours brilliant, clear amber-y orange, a surprise from a style that is more typically pale and cloudy. But lack of yeast sediment doesn't prevent the yeast from doing its job and providing a wild range of fruity esters as well as a drying finish. A subdued nose is the weak point, if there is one. If anything, it sets expectations a bit lower, which only enhances the powerfully fruity flavors of mango, sweet bubblegum, and a healthy dose of bittering hops. Mouthfeel is typical of New Belgium, which is to say, exceptional- mouth-filling but slightly slick, though the flavors definitely stick around well afterward. Prickly pear and passionfruit additions might be tough to source year-round, I would love to see this one-off Lips of Faith (or something similar) added to the rotation.

Pours a deep golden color with a small amount of haze. Off white one finger head.

Nose: Lemon, pepper, sweet pear, apple, honey.

Taste: Sweet, barny funk, juicy fermented apple, brown sugar, acidic zing.

Moderate carbonation with a crisp, fruity, and malty finish. Slightly bitter aftertaste.

Overall this was a very drinkable beer. I really enjoyed the subtle fruitiness - it was well-balanced with the rest of the flavors. Alcohol is well concealed. Not a very good example of the style, but a good beer nonetheless.
