A burly and bitter Imperial IPA, Rampant pours a pure copper and carries the sheen of a rightly hopped beer. The Mosaic and Calypso hops bring stonefruit to the front seat, and the addition of Centennials nod towards citrus for a well-rounded aroma. The taste expands these hops with heavy peach tones and a profoundly bitter bite. There is some malt sweetness to stand this beer up, and Rampant's finish is bone-dry.

22oz bottle dated 21-Jul-13 with Imperial Nonic glass
*Notes taken 05/23/13
A: Super clear golden blonde color ale. My pour produced a thick 3 fingers worth of stubborn khaki head with large bubbles forming craggy peaks as they pock away. The glass is left with a scattering of chunky lace. Looks like a fine malt beverage to me.
S: Smells a little danky with some melon, spice, and green berries at the forefront. I detect some bready malt sweetness in the nose however it is rather subtle as more dank herbal aromas bloom. Sappy with pine and a dash of grapefruit in there. Pretty nice and pleasantly hoppy.
T: Tastes of dank herb and spice with a light tropic fruit punch. It is a mix of melon, gooseberry, pine, and grapefruit with a hit of peppery guava spice. Not quite as tropical as I had hoped for and the flavors turn a little soapy at times. A little signature NB bready malt backbone in there with a kiss of caramel sweetness albeit rather tame amongst the hops. There is an upper level of prickly bitterness to the beer and some noticeable alcohol warmth. Earthy finish with some more herbals mixed in. Nice offering was just hoping for a little more tropical influence from the Mosaics.
M: Feel is a touch thin and watery with a nice creamy texture provided by the spritzy carbonation. There is a high level of bitterness and light alcohol warmth on exhalation. Light drying crisp in the finish with a moderate resinous linger.
D: This beer is no good. I am afraid the hops have run rampant. Actually I did enjoy this more so than the Ranger. Has a nice high level of bitterness with lots of firm dank pine and spice notes. Not nearly as tropical as I was looking for from the Mosaics but still a decent brew. Would have again, especially when discounted 30% at Albertsons.

Somewhat subdued and sweet for a double. Looks great with thick, rocky head. Aroma is apples (?), hops. Taste is hops and apple juice, with short, dry finish. Sharp bitterness remains on the palate. Smooth for a double, but without the kick I was expecting.

From old, undated notes. Poured from the bottle.
Clear yellow/orange color.
Bright white head; spotty lacing.
Light citrus nose with a hint of vinegar.
Thin mouthfeel.
A hint of honey saves the flavor, but this lacks citrus & is overly bitter.
