American Double / Imperial IPA |  8.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A burly and bitter Imperial IPA, Rampant pours a pure copper and carries the sheen of a rightly hopped beer. The Mosaic and Calypso hops bring stonefruit to the front seat, and the addition of Centennials nod towards citrus for a well-rounded aroma. The taste expands these hops with heavy peach tones and a profoundly bitter bite. There is some malt sweetness to stand this beer up, and Rampant's finish is bone-dry.

Appearance: Slightly hazy deep golden in color, with a massive, dense off-white head, which retains superbly. Belgian-style (appropriately) adorns the glass walls. The carbonation is very slight.

Aroma: Absolutely massive aroma of pine tar, which completely overshadows the caramel malt. Balanced the aroma is not.

Taste: Opens with a massive wave of oily, bitter hops, which totally overshadow the rest of the characteristics of this ale. There is a faint presence of sweet alcohol and caramel malt, but the hops tend to drown everything else out. Finishes with a lingering pine tar flavor.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, very full, like velvet on the palate.

Drinkability/notes: What could be an excellent Imperial IPA is overshadowed by heavy-handed use of hops.

Presentation: Packaged on a custom twelve-ounce brown glass long-neck bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Sourcing: Purchased at HEB in Texas in October of 2013 for $1.79 for a single bottle, plus tax.

A - Clear, straw color. One finger of foamy white head. Good looking beer.
S - Grapefruit, hints of berry (?), hops.
T - Bitter, grapefruit rind, lots of hops, balanced a bit by some bready notes.
M - Dry, light body. Slightly oily. Not diacetyl, but still rather unpleasant.
O - Nice flavors, definitely comes across as an IIPA, but the mouthfeel is just offputting enough that I probably won't order this again.

Served from a bottle into a New Belgium (Globe) glass.

Appearance: A fluffy white head sat on top of a burnt-orange body. Clear body. It glowed in the light and looked clean and appealing. Stick and relatively thick lacing throughout.

Smell: Sweet and floral with alcoholic esters.

Taste: Floral notes from the nose transfer to the tongue quite well. The hops stand out, they are not overwhelming for this style but they are definitely in full form. Very mild malts level out the taste and cover up the alcohol pretty well. Overall this Double is a bit sweeter than others. Something to take into consideration I suppose.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Moderate carbonation.

Overall: New Belgium did a great job with this Double. It is unique, yet it does not stray away from the fundamentals of the style.

Bottom Line: Worth checking out.

This is absolutely delicious and extremely floral. One problem, it's too sweet. Imperial IPA means high alcohol and high hops, not high everything. I know sugar sells, but I come to the Imperial IPA for crispness. Like I said, delicious. And complex, but not what I was looking for.
