The next offering to partake from New Belgium is this weirdly named, Blue Paddle, at least it was solid.

It has both a rich and appealing look and taste to it - bold, very refreshing, what I like in a pils. I enjoy the strong beer flavor without the overload on hops. The brew though was way more carbonated that I like - I felt it distracted from the overall experience. Maybe not the best in the New Belgium line, but pretty good as far as pilsners are concerned.

Good serve.

More my idea of a Pilsner. Light color, medium texture and flavor, less than 5% ABV, good, clean, smooth drinkability. The sort of one to have when you're having more than one.

A stylish beer that deserves a proper glass.

1/21/16 Washington DC (16 oz draft pour into standard pint glass). Blonde pour, nominal white head and carbonation. No aroma, somewhat sweet hop taste, nice and easy going down. Overall OK offering.

Pours golden yellow. Minimal lacing on the glass. Has a typical pilsner smell. Taste is crisp and the finish is dry. Could taste some hops. Good pilsner, but there are better ones out there like Konig pilsner.

Pours a hazy golden color with a 2 finger width foamy head. Head retention and lacing are both excellent. Quite a bit of carbonation bubbles. Has the classic malty pilsner aroma. Stale fruit, very mild hops, some floral element. Nice, crisp, refreshing malty taste. Stale tropical fruit with very mild spicy hop at the end. Light bodied with heavy carbonation. Crisp, clean finish. Good beer, but lagers aren't really my style. Wouldn't turn it away for a hot day on the river, that is for sure.

Picked up as part of an assorted 12er with four different flavors at TW. Cool can graphics, lets give it a whirl. Popping the to top I get a nice sweet floraly hop smell, alot like a PBR. Pours to a slightly cloudy straw color with a one finger macro bubble head. On the taste this brew has a nice lightly hopped flavor up front that transitions to a more bitter middle and a dry crisp finish with a roof of the mouth bitterness that leaves more to be desired. A solid brew for the style.

7/12...Pours straight clear gold with patches of white foam. Mostly see through. Nondescript smell, straw, hay. Clean pils taste, nice bitter. Chewy citrus. Nicely built pilsner.

Look: finger and a half of white head has decent retention. Pretty clear golden yellow in color. Very low in carbonation. Decent lacing.

Smell: Mild metallic hops. Something a little sweet. Extremely subtle.

Taste: Bright sugary malts. Very mild noble hops.

Feel: Crisp and half-dry finish.

Overall: Very Americanized Pilsner. Pretty dang sweet with plenty of residual sugar. Almost soda popish. I could very easily suck many of these down but I imagine the hangover would be lurid. Not very indicative of the style though not a bad beer. Worth a try though will likely never have another.

Pilsner. As an American, I see this style as the McDonalds of beer styles. Typical, unexciting, yet often solid. That said, this is akin to a specialty sandwich...yum..nicely done, but I'd rather go to a nice sit down restaurant.

Had as part of a New Belgium variety pack:

Look: Drank from the bottle at a golf outing - assume it was average.

Smell: Typical Pils smell.

Taste: Very refreshin. Grassy, light, and lemon-y.

Feel: Crisp and dry.

Overall: I have had better pils, but this was a good one to have on a hot day.

Pours a brilliant golden-straw in color, topped with an good-sized white head. Good duration, good lacing on the rim of the glass.

Nose is yeast and malt-neutral, but clearly reflective of the style in the other way: A short, sharp Noble-style hop character kicks in briefly. Some grassiness.

On the first sip it's got a nice hop bite and a bit of sweet malt, as well as a slight tanginess. White and green grapeskin, lingering bitterness, and some nice biscuit malt notes. Bittersweet. Hmmm!

Good malt character, fairly-good bitterness, and average drinkability for the style -- although it is a very drinkable style, to be sure. I'm liking it.

Better than average, and is frankly much better than I was expecting. I might have to look into picking this one up regularly, if I can manage to find it fairly fresh.

Can is freshness coded with a best-by date (15 November 2015), and was a part of a variety 12-pack.

poured out of a 12 oz bottle into one of my pilsner glasses, this beer pours a very clear, medium golden color with many streams of bubbles rapidly and continuously rising tot eh beer's surface. Has a giant head about 3 inches thick when first poured that eventually settles to a solid 1/3 of an inch thick with decent lacing. Aromas of crisp malt along with light hints of spice and a bit of hops. Not much else really smell wise, but that is okay for this beer. Has a slightly sweet, crisp malt presence upfront tastewise that is followed by the aforementioned spice hints and a decent hop presence that brings a nice and not overpowering bitter note that compliments the malts quite nicely. Has a crisp and frothy and creamy, medium bodied mouhfeel with moderate carbonation and an extremely clean finish. A very good overall representation of this style of beer and quite refreshing in the warm summer air here in Cleveland.

This is a pretty basic pilsner, if maybe a bit too bitter for my taste. It's a very easy drinker though, great on a summer day. I just like my beer a bit more balanced than this one. I'd prefer a bit more of the bready, malty flavor to even out the bitterness, and then I'd be all over this when it's hot outside.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker pint. "Best by" date was somewhere in the December 2015 range.

Pours clear yellow with a medium sized coarse white head with a fair amount of carbonation. Head fades fast. Smell is like a pilsner. A little lemon, a little grass, a little yeast. Smells fairly sweet, in a hay-like way.

Taste surprisingly bitter, but with a surprisingly sweet aftertaste. Strange, but not bad. A little skunky yeast flavor to it.

Mouthfeel is coarse, airy. Overall, it's not a bad pilsner.

Poured from a 12oz bottle (enjoy by date 27Sep15) into a pilsner glass.
LOOK: Pours with two finger's worth of thick, white foam that refused to die. Gold in color with a massive amount of bubbles. Lacing is moderate.
SMELL: Has mild aromas bitter hops, earthy yeast, and pale malts that combine with hints of floral hops, sweet malts, and grassy aromas.
TASTE: Initial taste is of mild earthy yeast and a hint of sweet malts. Mild pale malt and floral hop flavors enter right after as yeast flavors remain but sweet malt flavors become more prevalent. As all flavors now persist in strength, mild bitter hops flavors enter last. This creates a very complex and quite enjoyable final taste.
FEEL: Light-bodied, hardly carbonated, with an extremely crisp finish.
NOTE: I recommend you give this to Coors lights fans and watch them turn away from that and onto this.

This is like New Belgium's Snapshot. Very straightforward, un-complicated, but not necessarily a bad thing. It's great for when you want a simple beer.

Ode to the working man. Pilsners like most beer transport me to a time when a man would come home from a hard days work kiss his wife and kids and had a nice cold hoppy Pilsner. This beer represents that to me. Less hoppy than I would like but it will do the trick.

Had this poured into a pint glass. Mine was more transparent than most of the reviews on here would say, straw yellow color. Taste had a bit of spice on the tip of your tongue, but most light malt. Touch of malt in the aroma as well. Not a big pilsner guy, but this is a good one.

Pours as expected. There was not going on in the nose. I picked up some wheat, spiciness, and some hops but rather boring. It did not get you excited to take your first sip. I was pretty impressed with the taste. It followed the nose but the spices were a little more pronounced but not overdone and the hops were pretty tame. It was very pleasant. I have not had too many pilsners but this is one of my favorites. I will search this out again it is just too bad it is a rerelease for a limited time.

Warm day, long day. Time for a Pilsner.

Appearance : Slightly hazy mellow gold color, about 70% opaque. The head is generous with lots of fluffy flair. It stands about three fingers tall and leaves decoration as it recedes to about 1 finger.

Aroma : Hay, straw, perhaps after a rainstorm...some light spiciness and faint hop. Very faint orange. Bouquet is medium strength.

Flavor : The spice comes out in the flavor, biting the tongue and leaving a sharpness behind. There's a generous malt bill here but it's not a cheap one, and it compliments the hop spiciness appropriately. The hop does wax a little bitter though, which is the nature of it I suppose, but I wish it wasn't so shrill. That's the only thing I'd change.

Mouthfeel : Creamy and rich, with abundant carbonation. Ends slightly parched.

Overall : A solid Czech Pilsner. I'd have it again and recommend it to anyone who likes these kinds of beers.

Look: great clarity, yellow color (darker than most German pilsners I've had), foamy thick head

Aroma: fresh bread, biscuity aromas, earthiness,

Taste: pretty standard taste, but heavier on the malt side than most German pilsners I've had, no real bite to the finish that I was hoping for, tastes like fresh bread, not enough bitterness on the finish or enough carbonation

Mouthfeel: a little flat, medium light body

Overall: not a great example of a good German Pilsner I think. Too malty, not enough carbonation, and not enough hop bitterness to balance the finish. Good for a cookout because you can get it for cheap and anywhere in the US, but this one won't impress too many guests.

Slow poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Bottle looks sort of old school but not bad. A cheap yellow with a head that sticks around. One of the best smelling beers I've had in a long time. Bear is like a twin of MHL without the carbonation with a pale taste at the end.

12oz bottle into a pilsner glass
Best before: 13Sept15

A: Crystal clear, bright yellow, 1plus fingers width of bright white head, lots of carbonation bubbles rising to top of the glass. Head dissipates down fair quickly and leaves a few patches of lacing. 3.25

S: Lots of sweetness, honey like, biscuits, doughy, mild floral notes, subtle diacetyl butteriness. 3.25

T: Sweet malts, noble hope spice, doughy yeast, some bitterness. 3.25

M/D: Fuller body for the style/ABV, carbonation moderate, drinkability is ok. 2.75

O: Pretty average American Pilsner. Not a bad beer, but not something I would purchase (was leftover from a recent beach party). 3

I enjoy a good, cool pilsner on a warm day. This one was nice...clear and golden, with a bright head. The aroma is bready, with malt and spicy hops. Touch of sulfur. The taste is mildly sweet. Medium in body and clean. Nice.

Quick review. This is a really solid pils from New Belgium. Mildly bready malt offsets a nicely carbonated, light, bright body. Looks & smells a bit underwhelming, but comes through with its mellow, balanced flavors. This brew is easily the most satisfying Czech-style pils that I've tasted to date.
