New Beligum's Pumpkick, an ale brewed with pumpkin juice (qua?), cranberry juice and spices.
Appearance: It starts out with maybe a half a finger's head. The beer is an orange-amber, reminiscent of the outside of a pumpkin.
Smell: There is a definite pumpkin pie aroma going on here. Nutmeg. Also, a cross between banana bread and pumpkin bread. Interesting.
Taste/Mouthfeel: The taste is kind of complex and hard to immediately identify. There's a definite dry cranberry note towards the front. It fades into a pumpkin shell taste as it hits the back of the tongue, ending with a bit of pumpkin seed/stem. There is some acidity present, but it's more subdued. More of an accent than a feature. Finish is fairly short. This is very smooth and easy to drink.
Not the best pumpkin beer I've had, but a great everyday choice. And, feels very thanksgiving-y with the cranberry backing! I could even drink this at Christmas, I should say.
Poured into a pint glass, from a 12 oz. bottle.
And, I should call it cheating that they used pumpkin juice, but it seems to work well enough here. Still, I prefer when real, fresh pumpkin is used.
