Was looking forward to this as a good Berliner Weisse is a good thing and an Imperial BW should be a very good thing.
Started out good with a pale yellow slightly cloudy look and a bright white head.
Smell is also very nice with a tart aroma dominating.
The taste just doesn't have the sour that is expected. It is actually on the bland but sweet side.
Overall not a bad beer but not a great Berliner weisse.

New Belgium's Lips of Faith's Yuzu. This is an imperial Berliner Weisse brewed with Yuzu juice. 8% ABV. I've never had a Berliner Weiss (this is the first I've come across), and this is clearly not to style (typically, they are 2.5%-3.5%, from what I've gleaned), but it's a start. :shrug

A: Just over a finger of fairly active head. Fades to nothing, pretty shortly. Color is a cross between a filtered hef and bright lemonade. Yellowish-white in the dimple.

S: Grapefruit and lemon in the nose. A touch of a wheat beer smell. Apparent acidity is light.

T/MF: Hmm. I wouldn't call this a sour beer. There is a bit of acidity, but more of a slightly tart hef, than a sour (less tart than the Tart Lychee). Notes of dry lemon peel and wheat. Not much to it, really. A good one for wheat beer fans, but a pass for sour fans, I would say. Still, worth a try, in general.

Poured into a Belgian tulip glass, from a 22 oz. bottle.

Poured from a bottle into a Unibroue tulip. Appears a very clear, light yellow color, with a thin, fluffy white head. The head has some decent staying power, and leaves some decent lacing.

The nose isn't overly powerful, but the notes that do come through aren't overly inviting. The juiciness is there, but isn't tempting. There is a touch of tartness, but not much else going on. The taste is also very laid back, with the tartness coming through a bit more this time. The juice, and tartness are there, along with the wheat expected out of a berliner. However, nothing really stands out, and in the end, it's the most bland version of a berliner I've yet to experience.

The mouthfeel is medium to heavy bodied. I get that this is intended to be an "imperial" berliner weiss, but I don't think it works. This is a beer that you want to be light, refreshing and drinkable, and this is none of those, largely due to the mouthfeel. Overall, it's a below average beer, and not something worth seeking out. The yuzu juice is evident, but doesn't star, and the tartness isn't what I was looking for here.

22 oz. bottle, with 'packaged June 2013' printed on the label. A new beer to me from New Belgium, this one an imperial Berliner weisse style beer.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a pale yellow, but appears a bright juicy golden lemon color in the glass. Two fingers of frothy bubbly white head that dies down rather quickly. Looks pretty nice. Slightly cloudy; semi-clear. Looks alright.

S - Smell has that tart cheesy smell you would come to expect of a Berliner Weisse style beer. White grapey, woodsy, tart lemon / citrus fruits, slight bacterial yeast presence, and grassy / wheaty grain presence. It's an average aroma, but something appears to be missing. Not a powerful enough aroma for a beer of this caliber. There is a distinct peppery sort of aroma that jumps out at me especially.

T - Taste is semi-tart and citrusy with some peppery spicing / floral / herbal aspects to it. Orange / lemon. Dry and grassy. Tart and spritzy, woodsy, with some grapey / vinous white wine character to it. Grainy and wheaty, again.

M - Feel is smooth, creamy, clean, and dry. Mild stickiness on the palate, and subtle resinous fruitiness. Medium full-bodied with coarse sticky carbonation.

Overall, a forgettable offering in the Lips of Faith series, and in the realm of Berliner Weisse beers altogether, I'd say. I am a fan, really, but there just isn't enough here for what this beer has going on for it, being a Yuzu forward beer and all. More Yuzu next time, please.

22 ounce bottle, packaged June 2013. Served in a goblet, the beer pours a hazy gold color with a half inch white head. Head retention is good, and there's a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is mostly fruity, there's a citrus-like aroma that I'll assume is from the yuzu juice. There's also some citrus peel and apple cider noticeable. The taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some wheat/bready malt and a bit of peppery spice. Mouthfeel/body is medium, with a moderate amount of carbonation. It's also smooth and pretty easy to drink. I liked this brew, but I didn't think it was very tart at all. Still, it's worth a try if you've never had it before. $8.99 a bomber.
