22oz, Fall 2013

A: Slightly hazy pale yellow color. Thin layer of bright white. Highly carbonated. Sticky lacing sheeting.

S: Citrus. Tart lactic character. Smells wheaty. Grassy.

T: Punch of tart lactic flavor right up front. Then you get some of that Yuzu citrus, more lemon and orange. It's very bright and lively. Not as lactic and yogurt like as traditional Berliner. Finish is light and crisp. Abv is hidden nicely.

M: Lighter side of medium.

Respect the use of the Yuzu fruit from Japan in this beer.
Can't compare this beer to classic Berliner Weissbier from Berlin because simply I've never had one before.
It poured a nice yellow color and citrus aroma though light filled the nose.
A bit sour, very slight then nothing to taste.
Alcohol well hidden (very well hidden for 8%).
From my research a classic Berliner is very low ABV so I go back to start of review and give props for bold attempt to steroid this classic up to Imperial and throw in an Asian twist.
I wouldn't buy it again but glad I took the gamble anyway.
Life is an adventure.

22oz (bottled June 2013) into a tulip. Pours a hazy pale yellow w/ a white head.

Aroma is a blend of neutral grainy malt and a mild citric acidity.

Taste is lemony and grainy w/ a sweet undercurrent that's probably the yuzu. Wouldn't know though.

Mouthfeel is light and crisp, easy drinking, refreshing.

Overall an OK Berliner Weissbier, a little one-dimensional.

On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.

Pours a hazy yellow with a foamy off-white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, grain, and subdued citrus aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, earth, and slightly sour citrus fruit flavors on the finish. There is a very mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer with a subdued citrus presence all around.

22 ounce bottle into signature globe glass, bottled on 6/27/2013. Pours lightly hazy golden straw color with a 1 finger dense bright white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of pear, apple, lemon, peach, wheat, floral, herbal, grass, light pepper, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Nice and interesting aromas with good balance of malt, fruit, and yeast ester notes with good strength. Taste of pear, apple, peach, lemon, wheat, floral, herbal, grass, musty funk, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Minimal earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruits, lemon, peach, wheat, floral, herbal, grass, light pepper, musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Decent balance and complexity of malt, fruit, and yeast ester flavors; with light flavor robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very crisp and smooth mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a decent Berliner Weisse. Not really a whole lot going on in the flavors, but is smooth and drinkable with good flavor balance. Fairly enjoyable stuff.

Big fan of this adventure of New Belgium. This brew as with most of the Lip series is different. Not a typical Berliner. The wheat is way in the background. Poured a cloudy yellow with a small white head. Smelled of citrus and some spices. Mouth feel is sour with a hint of sweet. Flavors cover citrus coriander and a slight wheat taste. Some light malt with a forward yeast flavor. Can't call this a wheat, Berliner, or a whit. Very drinkable. Paired well with the spicy food I had with it.

the best way I can describe this beer simply is a sour wheat beer. it really throws you for a loop because I for one am not used to my sours tasting slightly citrusy and vice versa. still this interesting combo just makes you want to try more but not too much more

Interesting approach with this one, comes off sweeter than a traditional Berliner Weisse but just in the aftertaste. Due to high ABV? The mild sourness does accent the fruity citrus well. Starts with orange and lime fruitiness, kind of yeasty, then corn nuts, then soap, with an alcohol finish. Becomes soapier the more I drink it. Still, not in an un-enjoyable way. wth is a yuzu? Not bad, not as good as most other Lips of Faith I've sampled. 68/100
