Notes/Commercial Description:

Pours a dark brown color with a thick, fluffy head into my tulip glass. Lots of head. Looks good.

Aroma is full of sweet malt with a hint of raisin and hops in the nose. Grainy and even a bit smoky.

Taste is full of sweet, smoky, grainy malt with raisin and a bit of an alcohol bite. Simple.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering flavors as mentioned above. Beer goes down well and leaves a nice, sweet imprint upon the tongue.

A decent example of the style that is authentic and easy to drink. No hop or malt overload here. Just plain good 'ol altbier. Check it out.

Pours a slightly hazy medium brown with almost no head to speak of I thought it might be flat, very sweet aromas of caramel malt and roasted nuts.Very slick mouthfeel slides down easy flavors are on the sweeter side but not cloying, caramel dominates the flavors with an underlying roasted maltiness finishing with just a little herbal hop.A good beer no doubt as good as I thought and the hype? Not sure.

Appearance – Dark brownish-orange in color and very “alt-looking”. The head is modest, which I have found before with this style.

Smell – The toasted, caramel-infused malt base here smells sticky-sweet. The aroma is very inviting. I can also pick up a faint, floral hoppiness, but it’s just barely there (maybe I’m imagining it).

Taste – Oh, yeah, this is the real deal. The malts are serious. They aren’t roasted or dark, but they are toasted to the core and sweetened with toffee and heavy-duty molasses. The hops bring about a very bitter finish. This is one of those beers that pleases the old German at the Stammtisch and frightens young men, women, and children.

Mouthfeel – This bier will melt away in your mouth like a ghost. I swear, I’m pouring it in but I’m not swallowing. It literally dissolves in Pixy Stick-like fashion, like cotton candy on a warm summer day. This is probably the best mouthfeel of any bier that I’ve reviewed on the site.

Drinkability – I swear I started thinking in German while drinking this bier. A good, authentic Altbier is almost impossible to come by here in the US, but this is the real deal.

Pours a deep amber color. Smells of caramelly malt. Taste is interesting, with a little bubblegum (or something), with an almost smoky flavor.

Overall, I don't know what to make of this beer. It's quite good, but it's not a beer I'd want to drink very often. I may try it again in a few months, and see how I feel about it them...

Gotta love this bottle. Big, loud pop from the swing top. Pours a dark amber brown with hints of red and a nice bubbling head. Intricate lacing on the glass. Smooth caramel cola nose with raisins and some dark fruit. An herbal, spicy, floral hop is in the mix. Mellow.

First sip has a deep caramelly, toffee maltiness with notes of dark fruits. The spicy, herbal hops hit on the back of the palate and bring a hefty bitterness on the way down. I like the mix between big malt and hops here..makes for a very tasty brew. A bit dry on the finish.

Mouthfeel is good with a medium body and a nice creamy texture. Goes down so damn smooth. If it wasn't for the rarity and price per bottle here I could easily drink loads of this stuff. Good beer.

Bottled on 31.01. Am I to assume that is 2005? Poured into my Fankenheim Alt glass. Crystal clear copper/brown with a dirty white cap. Toasted whole grain breads and caramel. Nice scent of Spalt hops. Malt sweetness and hop bitterness it very good. Full bodied.

$3.49 for 11.2 oz bottle at the Dilly Deli in Cincinnati. Pours an actively carbonated, clear mahogany body with an attractive, tightknit, one finger head that is between beige and offwhite. Good retention and lots of patchy lace.
Aroma begins malty, with caramel, toffee, and a hint of chocolate, quickly followed by notes of floral and fruity(grape) hops in the background.
Mouthfeel is creamy and medium bodied, perfectly carbonated, and has a pleasant tingle of hops.
Taste is big for an Alt, lots of Munich style maltiness delivers notes of the caramel, toffee, and chocolate found in the nose, but the hops profile is sturdy and demanding of your attention. Hops are floral, as well as citrus, delivering a note of orange slice in the middle, and meld very well with the big malts. Ideally balanced, overall, and an abundance of pleasant flavors here.
Certainly, the best altbier I've ever had. Too bad this is brewed only two days a year, making it a tough find.

Great swing top bottle, definite style points. This one pours a nice dark amber/almond, with an off white head. very rounded and smooth mouthfeel, nose of malt and nuts. Well developed and smooth maltyness on the tongue, tasts of nuts, malt, bread, a bit of smokyness, pepper, earthyness. Rich w/ moderate alcohol presence. Fine German Alt. Great stuff, worth seeking out and enjoying.

Pours a dark amber color with slightly hazel-colored foam and a little haziness.

Wow, the nose on this beer is complex. Immediately loads of dried fruit shines through, dried figs, apricot and raisins, but not in a cloying or overly sweet sense. It is beautifully balanced against a fairly hoppy backdrop, absolutely perfect malt, hops and complexity.

After I take my first sip, I wonder what the heck happened? I was expecting a rich and perhaps even sweet beer, coating my palate but oh no, this beer literally and figuratively blows up, it is so light, so refined and the best way I can describe it is "explosively evaporating". The malts are light and airy, leaving a long sensation of light fruits, apple, apricot and nuts with a wet-granite like mineral character on the finish.

I could go on and on about this beer, but suffice it to say that this is in the top 3 of the best beers I have ever tasted. If you can find it, drink it!

This was another birthday gift. Have to admit, I had never seen this beer before, so thanks friends. I'm pretty sure they picked it out because of the bottle, but their system worked.

Nice pour into a pint glass with a great head. Really foamy and unusually stiff foam. The color was inviting and the carbonation had really small and effervescent bubbles that never ended.

Some cinnamon in the nose. Crisp and complex browned butter taste with a clean finish and nice mouthfeel. Very representative German tasting beer.

On the take-home scale I would rate this as a six pack. Not your everyday beer unless you are a German beer kinda person.

Bottled in 29 01 best by 29 02, well that's what the bottle says let's give it a shot anyhow. Appearance: Pours a nice caramel amber tone with a nice sized bubbly tannish cream head leaves even specks of lacing. When I cracked the flip top seal their was a huge pop almost champagne bottle like. Aroma: Caramel sweet sugary malts that are very appetizing blended with a nut edge and grassy noble hop finish. Taste: Big sticky flavors seems like the pinnacle of the altbier style, really ties everything together. Mild sweetness with grassy leafy herbal notes that represent the German hop flavor here decent bitterness in the finish. Very good alt gets my approval and the bottle I have says it's 6%abv, I think when I find a fresher bottle I will definitely grab one seems like some of the malts would be more flavorful if fresh but good stuff nonetheless. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied german ale very even carbonation to me, not bad. Drinkability: Like I said this beer sets the bar for the style I haven't had any alt that was this enjoyable easily could drink a few of these would like to go to Dusseldorf and sample on draft.

Uerige has the hands down best altbier. Deep red in color. Rich malt back bone. Hops are there, nice and bitter with little hop flavor just like an alt should be. Spalt hop flavor is mild. Great all around beer, good complex malt notes with balanced bitterness. Top of the heap.

On-tap at Trappeze in Athens, GA.

Pours a clear amber color with a large off-white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of grainy caramel malts with hints of toastiness. Also present are very light earthy hop and indistinct fruit aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth and moderately dry caramel malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by hints of toasted malts. Midway through the sip mild amounts of earthy hops come into play before fading out into a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a smooth thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this was a simple yet very good beer and one that to me seems like a standard-bearer for the style. Well worth a shot if you see it around.

Poured medium dark into tall slim glass, with good big head that almost threatened to overspill. Great aroma, malty, hint of burnt caramel, coffee and chocolate, slightly sweet - the typical aroma of a German Alt style beer. Great taste, medium rich texture but not cloying, dark tones of roasted barley, but nutty, refreshing, though a satisfying hint of bitterness of the hops in the finish. This is obviously one of the great Alt style beers, and cannot wait to try their beers in their BrewPub in Dusseldorf soon!!

Great bottle too...definately one for the shelf being unique shape!

(Served in a footed strange)

A- This beer has a warm glowing brown body with a light hint of red color. There is a creamy off-white head that last and last supported by a strong carbonation of tiny bubbles.

S- The smell of light dry toast and brown malt has a hint of dried leave and dry caramel malt in the finish.

T- The light dry caramel malt has a hint of toasted malt with mineral water. The finish has a soft green noble hop finish with a soft bitterness showing up after each sip.

M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a clean finish.

D- This beer has some interesting flavors but they are very soft and a bit watery.

Okay- I do not know what the hell this means.

Nifty bottle, Grolsch style ceramic cap with washer.

Lovely caramel raisin color, nearly opaque.
Appears to be a British Brown Ale.

This may be delicate and subtle but even warmed , I can't get much in the way of hops or malt up front here.

The tastet is oddly flat- can't pick up pronounced malt or hop character. Not bad- just not there.

Finish is smooth and cleansing and it is drinkable- just a funky old school brew in an overpriced bottle.

This poured to a dark copper and amber with a minor head. Carbonation is modest; no lace is being left behind.

The smell really gets thing started on the right foot. Nuts and caramel come through strong and in splended fashion. Tons of caramel and malt content makes for big flavor in the taste. The mouthfeel is very strong but not overwhelming, and it's very easy to drink.

This is the best alt I have had to date, hands down.

Opens with a solid 'pop' from the fliptop bottle. Pours a dark, tea colored amber with an offwhite head of foam that lasts the entire drink leaving a sticky map in it's wake.
Nice toasted amber malt aromas...very distinct.
Flavors are the toasted amber malt but without any of the sweetness. Dry bitterness on the end.
An excellent Alt.
