Notes/Commercial Description:

Uerige Sticke: A gift from a gentleman BA.

First, I’ve got to comment on the bottle: it is embossed glass, with a thin neck that is at least five inches long ending in a swingtop cap. Very nice.

Very interesting color: deep reddish brown, very clear, no haze or sediment. The head is a little disappointing, what little there was dissipated very quickly, and left virtually no lacing whatsoever.

The aroma is fairly mild, there are scents of spices, like nutmeg and cloves. A slight bit of malt aroma as well.

The taste is quite clean and very flavorful. Some slight spiciness is immediately notable, leading to fairly nice flavors of breaded malts, almost like toasted cinnamon bread. Nice hop flavor helps to balance out and clean up the lingering malt flavors. Very light bodied and extremely easy to drink. Clearly, well worth searching out on the rare occasions this beer hits our shores.

Poured from a swing top bottle into a pilsner glass.

Appearance: pours a murky brown with a thick head that retains well. Leaves a small amount of lacing.

Smell: sweet on the nose. Dark grains. Plums and raisins. Bread. Honey. Maybe tea.

Taste: the star of the show is definitely the sweetness of the malt. Serious taste of bread. Almost like a doppelbock in terms of sweetness. Just when you think the sweetness is going to get clawing, the hops level it off. Leaves with a cleaner finish than you would expect from the nose and initial hit of grains.

Mouthfeel: very smooth and pretty clean. Drinks like the 6% beer that it is.

Overall: definitely something different. As far as altbier goes, Sticke is certainly out of the box. More like a doppelbock than a kolsch. Definitely worth trying if you are looking for something big and different but still balanced.

A murky, muddy brown with reddish hues around the edges and a nice little dash of tinged foam to top it off. From the side it looks more that muddy brown, while looking at it from the top down, oddly enough, is where the deep mahogany/reddish appearance makes its presence.

The nose is sweet, first and foremost with a touch of tartness riding right along, piggy back style. This is your old world sweet: raisins and figs and a woody earthiness. This beer just reminds me more and more of antique furniture. In a good way. Complex.

We begin our journey... nah, just kidding that's dumb. That same raisin sweetness is the first guest to jump in, followed up with those figs and then a surprising twist of dull earthy hops and what I think of as a pilsener type of finish. In between more of that mustiness. Dominated (as it should be by malts). Some caramel works its way in there and an almost pumpernickel breadiness. In addition to the hops there's some zest bordering on sourness, but it backs off before the light hits its face, leaving us with a lingering tartness, accentuated by an occasionally bright sparkling carbonation.

I honestly had no idea what to expect with this one. I picked it up on a whim, so my expectations were low/absent. What I came away with was a very intriguing brew: complex and musty and quite enjoyable. Very glad I stumbled across this one.

Bottle purchased from Nathaniel Square Corner Store. A really cool looking flip top bottle, very unique.

Pours a bronzed, rusty thick looking brown. 1 inch head, no real lacing.

Smells like toffee and caramel.

Tastes incredible. Strong malt flavors hit at every turn- sweet caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toast, biscuity malt, etc. The German hops impart a slight spiciness to the proceedings, very grassy, and a tiny bit floral.

Very crisp, dry mouthfeel. Medium bodied, well carbonated.

The best of this style that I've tried, though I have not tried many.

Vintage Cellar $ 5.50
Undated bottle at 50 degrees into 16 oz tumbler
Lightly malty with a hint of flowery hops
Head average (3 cm), light brown, fizzy/creamy, rapidly diminishing into a 2 mm layer
Lacing in clumps
Flavor begins slightly malty with a touch of hops, not sweet but well balanced
Ends with a slight bitterness, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Light to medium palate, watery, soft carbonation

A very pleasing alt, something I will buy again.

The nose is spectacular. There is a malty bearing on the nose that promises richness and depth. It's sweet but not cloying. It's rich but not too nutty. There is a brilliant hop character on the nose that is at once both vibrant and restrained. It is as though a bountiful fruit character wants to explode from them but instead you have a perfect floral sweetness. A succulence that is the essence of the hops it self without embellishment. There is a bit of spice or pepper to the nose that is firm but not too loud.

The mouthfeel is incredible. Smooth, full of flavor and yet light. It travels with ease over the palate with the grain sporting a bit of dapper complexity even thought it does not evidence many flavors. It has a layered sweet presence that deepens and enriches the beer. It is also a dry grain that takes the mid palate. There is a bounty of hops on the palate that never evidence any fruit you can name although they seem ready to burst forth. They are sweet and delectable in and of themselves and their restraint is no loss to the perfect balance of this beer. Smooth. No bitter although you can taste the bitter from the hops subtly as if a shadow. A touch of alcohol lightly grazes the palate and it's finished now.

This beer is pristine and wonderful. It is brewed with care and expertly in accord with the purity laws of 1516. A masterpiece waiting to delight you with it's malt richness, with the bounty of the hop flower, clean and crisp as much from malt as from carbonation. Excellent!

This pours a muddy brown color with a slight beige head. The aroma is slightly malty but that’s about it. It has a very interesting malt flavor to it. There are hints of caramel as well as a little sourness. Lot of unique, hard to describe flavors to describe, but interesting never-the-less.
