: I purchased this bottle from South Lyndale Liquors in 2014 and drank it immediately. It was bottled 11/2011 and good until 11/2013. The importer/distributor buys huge lots of these then doles them out over a few years. L: It pours hazy amber under a 2’ white foam cap. S: Slight wet cardboard with washed out muted hop aromas. T: There is some staleness on the palate but rich malt flavors and some traces of fruit work their way through. The hops are muted. Starts lightly sweet and dries out on the finish. F: Creamy, medium body and carbonation. O: This is a good brewer shafted by a bad importer/distributor. Check the date codes before buying.

Appears very hazy and dark brown with orange-ish highlights. The dense, off-white head retains its lumpy shape for a long time. The aroma is somewhat sour with grainy malt and caramel. The flavor is dominated by assertive, moderately sweet, bready malt. It’s fairly bitter and a little metallic. The finish is grainy with a puckering woodiness. It’s medium bodied with a good deal of frothy carbonation and bite.

The flavor seems skewed in favor of the sourness and bitterness at first, but after a few sips the malt becomes more apparent and strikes a good balance with the other flavors. It’s very crisp and super drinkable (especially with only 4.7% abv). I would have liked to try the regular alt first to see how much of a difference the sediment makes. I imagine there is less sourness in its aroma and flavor. Nevertheless, there’s plenty of tasty malt in this one to make it enjoyable, and the bitterness plays its part well without overpowering the maltiness.

Purchased at Champagne's in MI for $3.99 for a 330ml swing top bottle. Served at 4deg C in a tulip

A- Opens well and pours a nice 2" white head that films out in a minute. Medium brown color. Unfiltered.

S- Touch sour. Bit metallic. Raisins.

T- Light malt. Metallic touch is back again. The bottle opened well so it's not an oxidation issue. Figs and a lightly burnt nut flavor. Not a massive fan.

M- Dry and tart. Burnt flavor comes back here too

O- Was looking forward to this one for a while but is a big let down. Not a big fan. Will not buy again. Too roasted or burnt for my liking

Food Pairing

This ok beer went well with..... Grilled cheese sandwich with tomato, onion and good 'ol cheese.

Enjoy

A - very dark brown, nice small head.

S - Raisins, dark fruit - plum or prunes. Heavy caramelized sugars, no hops noted.

T - Sherry-like character, tartness in aftertaste. Pruney with roast character without bitterness. A slight peppery character coming from the hops.

M - Smooth with low carbonation, tingling on the back of the tongue and slightly tart.

O - This is a very enjoyable beer with fruit and tartness, nice complexities, well balanced between roasted character. I'm reliably told that this bottle may have been on the shelf for a while - the sherry-like richness is most likely a result of some oxidation. Apparently when fresher, it is also known to have a brightness to the hops that was missing entirely in this bottle. As this was quite good, I'd really like to try a fresher sample.

Big thanks to Thirstybird for the opportunity to try this. 500ml flip top bottle. 5 Mar./5 Jul. indicated on the label. Pours a hazy bronze with a loose white head that quickly disperses into a skim. Nose really has no detectable smell. Taste reveals a peppery quality as well as a light toasted malt bill. There is a slight, residual German yeast presence detectable at the finish. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body (but closer to light), with a prickly carbonation. Overall, I found this beer a bit difficult to evaluate - in part because I just haven't had that many Altbiers as well as the fact that flavors and aromas didn't really assert themselves.

Served from the cask at the brewery in Dusseldorf.

A - Pours a nice reddish brown with a decent head that laces well.

S - Malty sweetness mixed with carmel notes. Hop aroma in this Alt was the strongest of those we tried.

T - Taste was a mix of roasted malt sweetness, and caramel. Hop bitterness was fairly high.

M - Light with good carbonation. Crisp and refreshing.

O - A good Altbier that was very tasty and refreshing. This wasn't my favorite Altbier that we had but definitely is one that I would drink again.
