Uerige Alt ist das an Bitterstoffen reichste Bier Deutschlands. Trotzdem (oder gerade darum) ist dieses legendäre Düsseldorfer Altbier so vollmundig, aromatisch und bekömmlich.

Gebraut wird unsere obergärige Spezialität seit 1862 aus Gerstenmalz, Caramelmalz, Röstmalz, Doldenhopfen, Wasser – und mit unserer ganz besonderen Uerige-Hefe.

Unser Uerige Alt wird regelmäßig unter die zehn besten Biere Deutschlands gewählt. Es hat einen Alkoholgehalt von 4,7% und ein Mindestfrischedatum von acht Wochen.

Good lord this is a pretty glass of suds! Just got in a case of this rather hard to come by brew and am pleased as punch. And, speaking of punch this baby gives a Champagne like burst when opened from its slumber in its awesome flip top format. The color is of the purest copper, and a sticky head with gracious stick and lace adds to the very elegant picture. A real treasure to behold. Ahh, and the aromas here are pure magic-clean as a whistle with fresh bready/malty nuances, gentle fruity esters, and magestic hop notes to boot. The mouthfeel is clean and crisp-quite dry and the finish is rather hoppy. Is this the ultimate session beer or what? Them damn Germans know how to make beer. Honestly, I can't think of a better beer for the style.

The perfect Altbier! Not a single characteristic could be changed for the better.

appearance; thick and sticky off white head. Excellent retention and lovely lacing. The main body is a slightly cloudy, weathered bronze.

smell; perfect blend of roasted malt and herbal hops. Definitely some sweetness in there that is too complex to describe.

taste; warm toasty malts with some burnt chocolate flavors, then the hops kick in, very spicy and balancing, with just a breathe of alcohol sweetness. Raw licorice with no sugar added, beautifully bitter but not overwhelming. The aftertaste is somewhat earthy and grainy with hints of cocoa powder.

mouthfeel; a bit creamy and thick on the palate but easy and light to swallow. Leaves a bit of stickyness on the mouth.

drinkability; I drank three in ten minutes need I say more...

It's hard to do this beer a justice, as adjectives worthy enough to describe it simply don't exist! My favorite beer in the world...possible, the best Altbier in the world...definitely!

This beer ist unbedingt one of the besten alt biers I've ever tried. The aromas suggest lemon-candied-hay, shoe polish, frische hopfen, gun smoke und zwar - wie ist es moeglich - "brass sap."
Bottled on April 14, 2004.
On the palate it is generous with noble, walnut and cedar tannins that provide a base for emminently flowery green flower flavors. Silky and eager to melt, the texture is a dream.
For dry, nutty, brew art... this may be it.
As long as you like it herb, zehr trocken, or, in other words, as dry as an espresso-covered pine forest.

Do you ever crack open a beer, planning to drink it while you do some other activity, only to find that you cannot focus on anything besides that sublime wonder in your glass? I take a sip of this beer, close my eyes and, bam, there is nothing but. A sublime experience.
I don't know what it is that is so wonderful about this beer. There is light powdered chocolate, the grape-flavours of spalter hops, mixed with that earthy twinge you'd expect from a noble hop, with hints of smoke.
I don't know what it is about this beer that is so good . . . but man, is it ever good. Words fail when describing this beer.

The colour is deep, warm brown-copper. The very high head is airy and pale brown with a fine crater. It sinks very slowly leaving massive amounts of thick lacing. The liquid is clear.

The smell is smooth and complex. Butterscotch, caramel, robust bitter hops, brown sugar, rye bread, overripe apples, hay, autumn forest, hay… There are lots of things going on here, but they stick together.

The flavour is bitter. Very bitter for a German beer, it reminds me of some of the best English IPAs in the robust powerful hoppy bitterness. Notes of rye bread, sweet notes of caramel and brown sugar. Dried flowers and hay, sour Porter-like hints. Very fresh flavours. Medium to full body. The aftertaste is bitter with lots of dried flowers and some toffee. Fresh grass, hay, cocoa, fresh herbs and some light spicy flavours. The long finish is malty, bitter and a bit roasted.

The carbonation is mild, yet the small bubbles are very fresh. The liquid is a bit sticky and mid-smooth.

Malty lika a dopplebock, hoppy like an English IPA and complex like a Quadrupel. All at 4.7 % ABV. One of the best beers I have had: This is beer love.

Enjoyed from the barrel at Uerige in the Dusseldorf Altstadt on a sunny, busy Sunday afternoon. It's taken me two visits to Dusseldorf to establish this, but this is close to the best beer I have ever had. Rich malt, smooth, dry (while being soft in the mouth), bitter, with the raw, heavy, hop flavour that appears to have come from a heavy bucketload of spalt hops (my personal favourite german hop).

I truly wonderful beer experience.

This is phenomenal, and seems to me the benchmark for a great altbier.

Dark copper, it has a big tan head soon shrinking to a thick foamy top, some lace.

Aroma is nice caramelly toast, raisins, wood, spice, toffee hint.

Taste is caramelised toast, fruit, woody-spicy bitterness to balance and give a light bite at finish. Very well-rounded, it is complex and balanced. It's wonderful, characterful, yet easily drinkable session beer.

A mildly hazy deep golden-copper. The head is ducked-down; a large-bubbled dirty white.
The nose is ripe with dry, grainy malts, and dampened sweet caramel ones. Along with loud herb-encrusted hopping.
Taste begins dry- pils-esque for a moment- and full of crackers. Deepens with caramel, but never turns very sweet. An absolute deluge of nuts rain down. Walnuts and almonds and Brazils. Hopping is crisp and loud. There is a sense of molten metal, gold perhaps, or brass. Back to nature upon conclusion, autumnal fields with withering flowers and wind-whipped brown grasses.
And it lingers.

Refined, then refined again.
Cite "lack of complexity"? You're wrong. This runs deeper than beers 3 times its size. The restraint and harmony here are unmatched.

If not for the price, this would be my "anytime" beer. The only two places $4 disappears faster are casinos and strip clubs. And it depends on the Strip Club.

Just goddamn delicious. Perhaps even more so than the Sticke.
Or perhaps not.
Both are Galaxy-class.

Sampled from the bottle; filled 31-1-2005 bb 02-03-05. Uerige alsways have been my favorite alt. Just by pouring out you already know you must have a good beer in your hand. Nice and thick yellowbeige head and a beautifully clear and brownred color make the appearance just perfect for a altbeer. Nose is sweet caramel& roastmalt together with litle yeastspice and hoparome make it a great smell too!
Taste is very complex for a 4.5 %ABV brew; caramel& roastmalt, very dry, litle sour and very bitter witch goes well wit the amount of roast used. Just what you want in a altbeer so perfect again. Mouthfeel is great too, all your tastingpupils are just gonna be in tilt after a couple of sips except for the sweet ones who don't react at all. Dinkability is perfect again if you like burnt and bitter taste. One of my all time favorites.

This beer comes in a unique bottle that looks just like the Sticke picture.

It pours a slightly less than clear copper brown with a decent head that laces a bit.

Smells like bread, rootbeer, and honey.

Taste is refreshingly bitter with a long long clean bitter aftertaste. The rootbeer taste is ever so slight. The clean and crisp bitterness of the beer makes me give it a 5.

Mouthfeel is nearly perfect IMHO. Carbonation is smooth and light and the bitter and clean taste is great.

At 4.5% alcohol, it is an extremely drinkable beer. Give me another!

(Note: Don't try this one after having something BIG. The nuances of the beer are hidden if your palate has been exhausted by something like an Imperial Stout.)

Semi dark brown colored malt body with a thick off white head. This alt covered all the spectrums of the other alts I had in Dusseldorf. Had a good hop nose from dry hopping? mixed in with a leathery, dank basement smell from the wooden kegs. Malty sweet but clean in the back of the throat in the beginning with a fresh hop flavor coming through in the middle. Strong hop presence in the bittering which left the mouth feeling dry and the tounge just a touch burned out from the hops. The best one I had in Dusseldorf.

the beer was a little cloudy which was kind of off-putting, but it may be OK since its an "older" beer style - I'm not sure if it was bottle conditioned or not. Color wise I get a coppery brown tint and a decent off-white head. The aroma gives me a hint of spicy hops as well as some yeasty notes. The latter surprises me some since I thought alts were kind of well-aged and smoother. I also get some nice dark German-style malts, some caramel, and some graininess. All-in-all they blend nicely. The flavor is killer, in my opinion - its smooth, yes, but also complex with nice bitterness in the end and an easy maltiness as well that attacks your tongue and blends with some hop flavor notes too. This is great, in my opinion. The beer is rather unique and that's hard to say in these days (only because we have so many great beers available since the craft brew revolution).

Pour: an awesome 330ml swing-top bottle to tulip glass. "Bottled on 03.09." - whatever that means. Pours a medium brown, syrup color with a huge three-finger off white head that vigorously clings to the glass as it goes down in the middle. I can actually hear the bubbles poppy, like Rice Crispies. No visible carbonation within the beer.

Nose: It has a very strong champagne-like smell. Floral and hoppy. Smells like freshly cut cantaloupe and some hints of darker fruit, possibly raisins.

Mouth: This beer has an excellent sweet:bitter balance with an excellent, long lasting bitterness after the swallow. It starts with some melon qualities up front and in the back the hops hit hard. The mouthfeel is a bit too creamy, though it does also maintain some sparkle to stimulate under the tongue.

An excellent beer!

The beer poured an deep golden amber color with just a slight haze. The head was yellow and moussy which laced the glass, but more than that stood tall from the first swallow to the last.

The aroma was nutty with a Munich character (even though no Munich is used in the beer). Also present were some caramel and chocolate notes. No distinct hop aromas.

The flavor was definitely bitter but well achieved with some munich, chocolate and caramel flavors. The bitterness was assertive and well done.

The finish was dry and hoppy bitter into the aftertaste. The body was medium.

The flavor is huge in this beer with only a 4.5% ABV. The aroma could be a bit larger, but the flavor is the surprize of the day. Have to give it the whole enchilada for the flavor.

11.2 ounce swing top bottle mostly in German. Purchased at A Southern Season in Chapel Hill, NC.

Pours a deep amber copper with a solid head that leaves a substantial cap and solid lacing.

Well balanced malt and hops greet the nose.

Taste echoes the nose, well balanced; closer to the Sticke than the Doppelstike.

Mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing with modest carbonation.

Extremely drinkable with the very modest ABV.

Attractive 11.2 oz. flip-top bottle poured into a Stange. "Bottled on 01.09" clearly printed on the neck label, with "Code 01.10" printed as well. Ingredients are listed: Wasser, Gerstenmalz, Caramelmalz, Röstmalz, Doldenhopfen, and Uerige-Hefe. Alcohol content stated at 4.7% by volume.

A nice pop from the release of the cap; pours a slightly hazed deep copper hue, giving rise to a one-fingered head of creamy beige foam, showing moderate retention, fading to a thick cap that leaves behind thick rings of lace on the walls of the slender glass.

Aroma is nicely complex, showing a very clean mix of rich, caramel sweetness, a mild essence of juicy sweet plum, and a kiss of noble hop perfume.

Fairly light in body with a nice cleansing carbonated mouthfeel. Toasty, biscuit-like malt lays underneath a wildly assertive bitter hop presence, somewhat grass-like and extremely dry, carrying things over into a bone-dry, slightly nutty, earthy, mildly mineral-like and quite bitter finish that lingers for ages.

A perfect quaffer if ever there was one, with such a wonderful complexity not found in lagers but with that clean, crisp lager character thanks to the lagering period involved. A top-notch Altbier, and one of the exemplars of the style; I can't wait to someday try this vom Fass at the source in the Düsseldorfer Altstadt. Delicious, drinkable, and delectable. I want another.

0.5L bottle purchased at a drink market in Dusseldorf. Filled on August 13 (13.08.) with a best before date of September 12 (12.09.). I bought a case about a week before the best before date and have been drinking them for the last month. I haven't really noticed much of a change over time. It's still ridiculously bitter with a crisp and clean roasted malt base. The hop flavor is herbal up front and becomes more piney as the bitterness kicks in. I would think they use noble hops in this beer, but the aroma is dominated by hops that remind me of the citrus and pine smelling hops typically found in a IIPA. Poured a tall, creamy, off-white head that held strong leaving bits of fine lace. Glowing chestnut colored beer has a faint haze. Mouthfeel is light and clean until the bitterness envelopes your tongue in the finish.

It's good in a bottle, but if you have a chance it's a totally different experience drinking a fresh glass at the brewpub.

Pours with excellent clarity and a tenacious, fine-textured off-white head that leaves plenty of lacing. Nicely appetizing dark copper color with some ruby-amber highlights. The nose is wonderfully fresh with spicy hops and crackery malts. Some fermentation-derived notes, like a bit of fruity bubblegum pops up in the midst of the honeyed complexity. On the palate, firm-but-mild tea like bitterness starts things off and moves further back on the tongue, gaining in power, through the palate. The malts start to round out at the mid-palate, displaying some nice chewiness and depth, before the finish dries out in hoppy glory. Mouthfeel is pretty heavy on carbonation, but its soft carbonation that feels pretty natural. Good weight for sessioning, in spite of the slightly high ABV. Overall, this is a fantastic beer. Drunk fresh, this is a stellar example of a drastically under-appreciated style. Interesting, drinkable, refreshing. Excellent.
