Appearance: dark reddish brown (darker than Schumacher), less clarity, foamy white head

Aroma: more pronounced toasty malt character, with subtle noble hop character, dark fruit notes

Taste: toasty malt character, but noticeably more fruit flavor than Schumaher, raisiny-plum dark fruit character, mild bitter finish with noble hop flavor

Mouthfeel: lager like smoothness with biting carbonation, slightly more buttery taste than Schumacher because of increased diacetyl, medium-full body

Overall Impression: A darker, heavier, and more ale like version of the altbier. While this beer exhibits lager like mouthfeel and carbonation, it leans towards an ale in clarity, flavor, and aroma.

The beer comes in a little glass with a clear copper body and a nice thick and foamy off white head. Laces the glass wonderfully.

Aroma of noble hops and grain.

This medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation works its way over the palette with a hop bitterness. It dries out the mouth.

Uerige has the best alt in town as far as I'm concerned. A great place to hang out and drink 5 or 6 or more...

On tap at ChurchKey. Served in a mini snifter.

Pour is a caramel-colored liquid that is mostly clear. Thin off-white head and a bit of lacing. Nose brings a good amount of light bread and earthy hops. Nothing too complex; perhaps a bit of very light fruit. Flavor is similarly restrained with some bread and then not too much else. However, the hops coke through in the finish for a good bitterness. Light body and good carbonation. Good, but nowhere near the Sticke or, especially, the Doppelsticke.

I had a few of these at the brewpub in the Altstadt, Dusseldorf. The place was too packed to eat at but luckily you could get beers at seats in front of the building.

The beer is reddish-copper colored and clear, with a nice cap of foam (similar to others of the style I had within 2 days of each other). It smelled muted as appropriate I guess, but thankfully balanced a little more heavily towards hops than the others. Beyond the light grassy (Saaz?) hops I get the usual grains and breads from the malts. Not a beer that demands deep reflection though, just an inviting aroma.

The flavor is caramel and roasted malts upfront with a nice bitter edge at the end and a clean aftertaste. No problems whatsoever, and this is one of my favorites within this style.

Had on tap at the brewery in Dusseldorf. Served in standard small glass cool.

A-dark copper body and an off white head.

S-floral smell and some cereal scent

T-toast, much sweeter than other altbiers, faint floral finish

M-medium and somewhat slick.

D-good beer that I would have again but I personally think that there are better balanced altbiers in Dusseldorf.

A: chestnut/deep amber color, really nice creamy off-white head and lacing, served in it's own branded glassware.
S: caramel and lightly roasted nuts.
T: lightly sweet dark bready malts to start, but there's a sourish character which is off-putting. can't believe that this one is off or that the taplines are bad, because this was served at the bavarian lodge, which is meticulous in it's service of proper beer.
M: frothy and would be nice but the astringency from the sourish aspect hurt here as well.
D: same theme here.

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City.

Pours cloudy medium brown with a lasting off-white head and good lacing.

Aroma is malty and nutty for the most part. Nice but not too much to it.

Flavor is not sweet at all. Caramel malt, grain, slight fruitiness, and slight hops.

Medium-bodied and crisp with good carbonation.

Very good for the style overall, but not outstanding for a beer in general. Drinkable.

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt, served in a .2 liter Uerige stange. The beer itself appears a hazy copper color, and arrives from the tap with a finger of thick cream colored foam.

The nose is hop forward, earthy and herbal, faintly toasted and metallic. Berry-like fruit notes come out with a little agitation.

Incredibly flavorful for the low ABV, it washes the tongue with bitter herbal hops, flavors of earth and mineral, toasted malt and light fruity tartness. It's a complex beer, difficult to wrap the mind around but immensely enjoyable. The finish has a big hoppy bite, quite bitter but also faintly metallic and sour. This is a beer I'll have to revisit a few times before I can fully grasp every nuance.

Served on draft at a local beer bar, been wanting to try this on draft for a while now. Beer is light brown and hazy. There is a thick white head made up of small bubbles that leave a ton of lacing on the glass. Carbonation is moderate (kind of hard to tell but its definitely steady and present).

The aroma is little light compared to the doppel and sticke, but its about the same, some estery fruits, a hint of alcohol or something else, hard to tell.

Beer has a medium body and finishes cleanly with no aftertaste. There is a mild bitterness throughout but there is not much flavor up front at all. The more I drink the more there appears an aftertaste, a slight bitter taste that builds in my mouth. Maybe a like sulfur in that back flavor as well. Drinkability good and mouthfeel could use some more connectivity but overall a good experience.

On tap at Max's yesterday. I feel lucky for being able to try all 3 Uerige altbiers fresh, on tap, and side by side.

Amber with light amber highlights, this beer is a touch lighter than the regular Sticke. Dense off-white head with great retention and lacing. On the nose, this is clean, with grassy hops and a bready character that makes me think of raisin bread. Mildly spicy, almost rye-like with a touch of baking spices. The palate opens up very hoppy and bitter with earthy hops with the character of petrichor. Mildly grassy and lemony. The malt character is similar to but a touch lighter than the sticke. Mild caramel is present, and the finish is long, dry and bitter. Carbonation is high, and enjoyable. Drier and hoppier than the sticke. Thoroughly enjoyable, I prefer the sticke though.

Had this on tap at the Brick Store Pub. A rare treat. Pours chestnut brown with a nice fluffy head and sticky lacing. Smells like a freshly cleaned stable. Sweet hay and a touch of earth and wood as well as fresh grains. Some light malt throughout as well. The taste is similar, with predominant notes of hay and cereal grains as well as some light malt. Smooth, toasty, and malty, quite dry and easy to drink. Nice to try this on tap.

I will preface this review with this, I have never had an Altbier before and also this is my first BA review. So with that said, I had this wonderful beer at the Brickstore Pub in Decatur GA yesterday. It was served to me in proper glassware a .2L glass with the breweries name printed on it. Small was of sweet malt which is something I normally don't like. I would also say that I was almost put off cause it had a hint of skunkyness to it. Once I tasted it thought the thought of that was quickly gone. It had a very nice caramel taste with just enough bitterness to round it out. The aftertaste was something I can't put my finger on, some kind of warm fruit that's just not distinguishable to me. Overall a wonderful beer that I will be wanting again soon. I might have to find a homebrew recipe for this, so I can always have some on the shelf!

Had this on-tap at the Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta.

Pours a hazy rustic copper color with a one-finger pitted white head. The head eventually settles into a thin layer of bubbles on top and a medium-sized ring around the glass. Lacing is good.

Smells of lightly toasted caramel malt with hints of light fruits and bitterness.

Tastes similar to how it smells. The toasted caramel malts are front and center and cover up other flavors a bit too much until the beer warms, then light fruit flavors come out a bit more. There's a solid bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good for such a low ABV. Good thickness and creamy carbonation make this go down easily.

Drinkability is good. The flavors take a short while to get accustomed to, but I finished my glass with no problem.

Overall I was impressed - I believe this is only my second Altbier and the first wasn't as true to the style as this. Definitely give this one a shot.

Dark brown with not much of a head to speak of. Aromas are a bit weaker than the sticke but still consists of nuts, spices, floral/herbal hops and more. The taste is hoppy up front and malty in the middle witha good balance of the spicy/nuttiniess. Mouthfeel seems a bit thin for me but drinkability is very good. Despite its short comings this is still damn nice. It will live in the shadows when compared to the sticke though, imo.

The beer is overall copper colored with various shades and colors coming thru the glass. Hazy shades of orange and brown ... with a very thick head that leaves lots of lace on the glass. Plenty of carbonation bubbles up as you drink the beer.

The scent isn't too strong, but from the light malt aroma I can tell how dry this beer will be. As the beer warms, some caramel and floral hop aromas are evident.

The initial taste is extremely dry, with some mild caramel. Afterwards, long, lingering, spicy hop flavors develop.

Very nice brown color with a very generous level of carbonation. Malty aroma with a hint of sweetness-almost a touch of cinnamon in the backround. Flavor is mostly malt-slight hop bitterness in the finish. A very slight metallic aftertaste but its not unpleasant. Good body. A drinkable beer-well worth trying after hearing about it for years. I would love to get to Germany for the real thing on tap.

Sampled at the brewery, in small highball-type glass, I'd say ~8oz serving.

Appearance: Caramel-orange/reddish with a half inch thick creamy, sticky head that died down but held on long enough.
Smell: Really piney, fresh hops
Taste: Clean maltyness with just enough hop balance. Medium carbonation and thin mouthfeel makes this brew very drinkable.

A 11.2 oz bottle that is dated as being bottled on 4/14/04. Pours a cardboard brown leaving a three finger head that is quite pillowy and foamy. First sip - Wow! A wonderful hops taste that remains on the edges of the tongue. Not a bitter hops taste but a green taste. I had a local version of Alt beer and it was much more watery and thin with little hops flavor. This has a little more depth and something going on with the hops. When I take a bit more of a bigger sip and swish it around I get a malty taste that is present but goes away much more quickly. I have avoided getting some imports lately as they seem to go stale by the time they get here but this one tastes very good in spite of being stored out of a cooler.

pours a rich copper with an off white head that lingers a little longer than a good night kiss.. Smells more malty than its cousin the Uerige Sticke. Taste is also more malty. Classic Alt style brew with nice brown ale caramel and toast notes. Not nearly as hoppy in the finish as the Sticke, but its pretty darn tasty. More in line with the tradional alt style. I prefer the Sticke, but the Classic proved worth the price. Pair it with some smoked gouda, or smoked almonds for a tasty treat

A grand downy mass rose over the hazel colored liquid...
f#@k that.
This beer ist unbedingt one of the besten alt biers I've ever tried. The aromas suggest lemon-candied-hay, shoe polish, frische hopfen, gun smoke und zwar - wie ist es moeglich - "brass sap."
Bottled on April 14, 2004.
On the palate it is generous with noble, walnut and cedar tannins that provide a base for emminently flowery green flower flavors. Silky and eager to melt, the texture is a dream.
For dry, nutty, brew art... this may be it.
As long as you like it herb, zehr trocken, or, in other words, as dry as an espresso-covered pine forest.

The beer comes in a hazy dark ruby with lots of particulate.

The aroma has pilsner quality of floral, grassiness, a toasted malt, caramel and candy sweetness, lager yeast.

The flavor follows with a slight caramel and candy sweetness in the front. A pilsner and lager yeast quality. Floral hops. Then onto a strong bitterness for the style of grassiness, earthiness, almost pine, and a big herbal and tea leaf quality.

A pretty good beer for the style, but because of the bitterness and hops, I suspect that my 10 month old bottle had some oxidation, so try to get this beer fresher than that.

Pours very dark brown, with a nice beige head forming up. From the look of it, it will be a malty, compact, dense drink.
Smells of roasted malts, dark spices and green and dry grass.
Roasted malts, somewhat sweet with a dark fruitiness background (low raisin, dry figs). Hint of apricot also, and some low citrus (a mild lemon zest that you usually get in a lager also). Yeasts are hard at work, earthy, spicy, woody. A floral note, but a bigger herbal note, with pine, sage, dry cones. Hops are big and clear, and create a hugely intense dry bitterness, enhanced by the roast, really rough. The bitterness and an alcoholic warmth linger for a very long time in the aftertaste, but not in a bad way.
A little fizz, but the beer is mostly creamy, dense and robust.
A great intensity of aromas, beautiful balance between malts, yeasts and hops creating a strong, very "German" bitterness that few beers achieve.

Bottled 6/2013. Best before 6/2014.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Tiny chunks of sediment are seen floating around in the beer after the pour. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and biscuit aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel and herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a surprising hoppy flavor that I wasn't expecting based on the smell.

A: Fantastic tall and compact beige head fills the glass. After a while the liquid appears as the head starts to dissipate. The color is lovely glowing brown. Nice lacings.

S: Roasted malt, kind of dry. Suttle hoppiness brings fruity notes; ripe oranges and pears as well as dark dried fruits. Sweet.

T: Toasty malt, roasted and bready. Yeast and quite spicy. Rich fruit; follows the smell. Sweet, but also dry. The bitter hops are strong but very well balanced. An metallic back-bone (like in every Altbier I've ever had).

M: Aftertaste is rather long and bitter (cherry kernel-like). Body is so smooth and medium full, while the strong carbonation is very modest and un-aggresive.

O: This is a very well crafted and balanced Altbier - probably the best I've ever had.
