Gebraut wird unsere obergärige Spezialität seit 1862 aus Gerstenmalz, Caramelmalz, Röstmalz, Doldenhopfen, Wasser – und mit unserer ganz besonderen Uerige-Hefe.

Unser Uerige Alt wird regelmäßig unter die zehn besten Biere Deutschlands gewählt. Es hat einen Alkoholgehalt von 4,7% und ein Mindestfrischedatum von acht Wochen.

Very cool swingtop bottle, great for the collection.

Poured a dark brown color with copper highlights evident in the light, with a nice thick tan head that stayed around for quite some time. Left some real nice lacing too.

Malty aroma, sweet, with a hint of spicy hops in the finish, nice and pleasant, appetizing.

Pleasant, lightly roasted flavor, a bit earthy and nutty, well balanced finish with only a slight hop bitterness lingering, making you want another sip. Nice and flavorful for a session beer.

Velvety and medium bodied, a pleasant drinking experience, and quite drinkable.

A well done beer and good example of the style.

Poured a medium cloudy amber hue with a one finger pillowy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a an earthy and estery hop with a husky grain bill.

The taste consisted of a strong graininess with a fruity, yet mildly spicy hop.

The mouthfeel was of medium fullness and slightly chewy.

Overall a very unique and tasty beer. Certainly something I would like to revisit.

A: Muddy, dark cider looking beer. Head is fine but present, off white with reddish hints.

S: Chewy granola bars, red apples, carob chips, cooked carrots and toasted wheat bread.

T: This beer tastes a lot like it smells. Begins doughy with a good amount of caramel to it. A very thin amount of rum raisin joins these flavors, subtly but seductive. Surprisingly dry and quite bitter, especially for a German beer (or alt for that matter)…but not as bitter as its Uerige counterparts which are much more over the top in that department. A bit of fruity sweetness in the apple area with a touch of tutti fruity to it. Finishes peppery, a bit dirty with lingering cookie dough.

M: Medium body, sort of fuzzy.

D: Not bad, but doesn’t stand up to its superb cousins.

Pours a deep amber copper with a solid head that leaves a substantial cap and solid lacing.

Well balanced malt and hops greet the nose.

Taste echoes the nose, well balanced; closer to the Sticke than the Doppelstike.

Mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing with modest carbonation.

Extremely drinkable with the very modest ABV.

Presentation: poured from a swingtop bottle with bronze outlined shield shaped label. Bottled on 11/25 displayed on the neck label.

A - Opened with a loud POP! Pours with vigorous effervescent yeast action. Slightly cloudy with countless bubbles that form to make a whipped up white head.

S - Malty sweet, nutty scents emanate as wall as hop spice odors. Caramel and honey like aromas are noticed.

M - Lively and sweet, sticky with a crisp feel. Just slightly bitter, very middle range not too light - suffficiently mouthpleasing body. Very clean with palate cleansing effervescence.

T - Malty and prickly with active carbonation. Honey caramel like flavors from the malts are sweet, but not overly so. A bitter and nutty quality is apparent with the finish of every sip. A nice balance of slighly peppery clove spiciness and faintly sweet nuttiness. A white pepper note returns upon repeated tastes with a gentle sugar and dry grainy flavor as it warm that is pleasant like lightly toasted wheat.

D - Great drinkability is found in the low alcohol, session worthy ale. The alt has a nice fruity essence with spice, hop, and pleasing carbonation adding balance.

Slightly clear but deep bronze brew, good head architecture. Retains almost none of that head, thinnest of rings around the outside, little islands of tiny bubbles float around the middle. Dark fruit Vienna malt aroma, a touch bready and quite earthy.

The flavor is dark fruit, a lot of caramel malt. Actually a fair amount of hop presence, as compared to the other Alts or doppelbocks. I think the hops are a little peppery and maybe a little citric. The mouthfeel is a little oily from the hops, thick and viscous though. Great brew, I prefer this one to the other Ueriges for drinkability, although for 4.5% it's not the easiest-drinking beer.

This beer is just a shadow of the deliciousness that is the Sticke or Doppelsticke. Still good nonetheless. Despite it being a bit fresher than the Sticke I had last night, it tastes slightly oxidized in comparison.

The beer pours to a clear bronze color with a nice active carbonation. Supports a nice creamy white head with a decent lacing. Riddled with sediment. Perhaps I should have waited a day since the sediment was roused from the bottom on the way home from work.

The smell is good. Quite malty in comparison to the Sticke and Doppelsticke, though that is not really a surprise. Very bready and biscuity with notes of toasted caramel. Also a mild hops bouqet rounding things out. A hint of wet cardboard oxidization, despite it being bottled just under two months ago. Has a very small ester profile due to cold fermentation.

The taste is very similar to the nose. Pretty much tastes like a mix between sourdough and pumpernickel. Light berry esters and a nice floral, grassy bitterness in the finish, though unfortunately it is accompanied by a hint of wet cardboard oxidization. I wish I would have tried it sooner, since we got it in only a few weeks after bottling as I recall.

The body is medium and very creamy. Doesn't seem to be any carbonation that sharpens the palate. It would probably help to define the hops a bit more, but it feels nice and slick. The finish has a very light hint of alcohol burn. Still quite drinkable despite the slight oxidization. I love me some altbier (especially the Sticke, and to a slightly lesser extent the Doppelsticke). If only there were more commercial examples of the style that were readily available to me, but I am quite impressed with Uerige.

Small pop-top brown bottle. Somewhat murky amber-orange body with a good inch of head that leaves good lacing. Smells nutty with some other malt. Tastes malty with kind of a peppery/smokey quality to it... Caramel malt is also a big player in the flavor. Rather light in body. Not sure how fresh this one is. Not quite like everyone else is talking about... Nonetheless, not bad, but not great, and I probably won't be triny this one again unless I find it on tap somewhere.

33cl. bottle: This one pours a slightly hazy, somewhat coppery-brownish color. Mine had very little head that dropped off quickly and left no lacing. The aroma is good. Some notes of fruit (possible apple) and caramel. Some grassy hops also. The taste is quite good. A hint of sweetness in the beginning, followed by a dry, biscuity taste, along with some bitterness. A large amount of flavor for such a low alcohol beer.

This beer is a copper, brown beer with a creamy head and little visible carbonation.

Smell is malty with some roasted and bitter notes.

Taste is bitter and dry at first, then the maltiness balances the bitterness for some part, but bitterness is high, so that outbalances the beer a bit. Some light fruitiness in the back, but mainly hops and malts are the main players. Aftertaste is bitter and dry, just like a good Alt should be.

Presentation: Very cool swing-top bottle. Most of the label is in German and therefore foreign to me however it does say bottled on 25.11. (whatever that means).

Served chilled in a stange glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper color with lots of suspended particles in the body. a huge head in the stange has decent retention and leaves plenty of lacing.

Smell: The smell is simple yeasty caramel malts.

Taste: The taste is dry with both fruit and vegetable attributes. It has a caramel malt base with some smokey flavors and grain. There are hints of apples and carrots and finally some grassy hops. The aftertaste and the burp a vegetal.

Mouthfeel: really quite dry and lingers on endlessly.

Drinkability: Maybe it isn't fresh or maybe that is the way this beer is built. It is enjoyable for one but not really my cup-o-tea so one is enough for me.

Hazy, deep amber with a reddish hue. A fairly vigourous pour resulted in 3/4 inch of dense, off-white foam. Good retention with a bit of clumpy lacing. Malty aroma with a bit of grain, caramel, dried fruit and herbal hops. Malt forms a solid flavour base that allows other characters to be build up. Bitterness is easily an equal to sweetness and the hop flavour starts of herbal and builds almost to the point of being medicinal before the finish, where is switches to lingering mint. Very distinctive and quite tasty. Dried fruit provides some additional sweetness in the middle. Refined, well-integrated carbonation with a good body that dries out by the finish. I really enjoyed this beer. It's easy to drink and has a really interesting flavour. I'll definitely have this again.

This alt pours into my mug an orangey-golden color with some cloudiness and thin, but persistent white head. The aroma of this beer is rather sweet, that of caramel type malt and maybe a sherry aroma, judging by this and the bottle date, the beer may be a bit over the hill, we’ll see. I cannot detect much of any hop aroma. The taste of this beer is quite complex. There are elements of malty sweetness, that of fruit, and bready notes. The hop bitterness is moderate and balances the sweetness of the beer nicely. After the swallow, the beer leaves my mouth rather dry with a moderate-low hop taste present, definitely wanting another sip. The beer is medium in body and rather highly carbonated, yet is incredibly smooth. Overall I truly enjoyed this one, not as much as the Uerige Sticke, but this was very good. I like the flavor of the beer best, along with the aftertaste, it really leaves you perfectly, not too sweet, not too bitter and not too dry, but rather the perfect mix of the three. I would like to try a fresher sample sometime and see if the aroma is any different. I’d recommend this beer and if I ever make to Germany, I will visit Uerige!

Poured into Uerige stange

Pours a hazy copper with a creamy, fairly thick one-finger head that remains steady a short while before becoming a lasting thin cover. Leaves traces of lacing.

The smell is of caramel and citrusy hops.

Sweet, rich caramel is just about evenly balanced by crisp, citrusy, biiter hops. The hops seem for a short tad, to almost outpace the malt, but the malt quickly makes a comeback and they remain about even throughout the drink. A touch of brown sugar emerges as the drink progresses. Nicely balanced between the malt and hops.

It's fairly smooth, but has a slight rough edge to it that I can't quite place. Just enough thinness comes through in the feel to bring the drink down from full-bodied to the upper end of medium bodied. Despite the low abv, and unnoticeable alcohol, there is a sharpness, and just enough fullness, to it that makes it lean more towards the "sipping" side than the "session" side.

The flavors, especially the caramel malt, hang on for a long while. The bottom line - it's a deserved world classic. Very tasty.

11.2 Fl. oz., "Bottled on 25.11..." No year listed, but most likely 2005. Ceramic flip-top loudly sprays a mist into my eyes as I open it. Poured into the closest thing I have to a traditional Altbier glass (a 14-ounce plum jam jar), Uerige Altbier Classic pours beautifully -- slightly hazy caramel-brown with a dense, meringue-like, light tan head. Aggressive carbonation. The nose is very modest, nearly absent: wispy aromas of oranges with doughy malts and some indeterminate spice (coriander seed? allspice?). The taste is far more forward, with flavors of toasted bread, orange pith, bergamot-infused tea, coriander, and a slight maple sweetness. Very complex. Great thick rings of foam lace the inside of the glass. Light in body, mellow carbonation on the palate. Dry finish -- with as complex a flavor profile as this beer has, it's got a remarkably clean mouthfeel. Altbier was the first style I truly fell in love with back when I first frequented the local brewpub in Lincoln, NE. I don't think I've had another one that I can remember for several years now, and I'm ashamed for that fact. This is an outstanding ale that everyone should try at least once.

Poured into a standard pint glass a rich bronze color with a hint of brownish hue a well formed creamy 1/2 finger white head atop,interesting herbal aromas almost vegetal in character a roasted nut character lends itself well to the uniquiness of the aromas.Lightly sweet flavors that of molasses and brown sugar up front with a nutty base a very nice herbal/peppery sharpness really comes thru in the finish really really nice.This is probably one of the standards if not the standard of the style and it shows why light but complex and very flavorful,kick ass.

Pours a clear and almost lager like amger. But not a lot of bubbles and a crappy head and no residual foam during the drinking. A par mix or toasted malts. Byt very hard to pick up in the nose. The taste is just a bit easier to pick up. A very lagery bread crust tase with some carbonation that is tasted but not seen. A very lager feel to the palate as well. Crsip and refreshing.

Pours amber with a 2 fingers offwhite head. Okay lacing & average head retention

S: Ever slight whiffs of malt & hops

Taste: Big grapefruitty/woody taste up front. Slight malt sweetness & a hint of tobbaaco as it warms. Slight astrignecy also perimiates the body. Finishes slightlty sweet with woody notes

MF: Medium bodied, slightlty under carbonated & skews too hoppy for the style IMO

Drinks okay. Maybe this beer is tired? I do know this tasted much malty & sweeter the on one evening I spent at the brewery in Duddeldorf. Would try again if I was sure I getting fresher beer

This bottle is purchased at the BSF bar, GBBF06, and it's my second time to taste this beer. My first encounter took place on-tap, at the Battersea BeerFest., Feb. 06, when the "omnipresent" provider (of German beers to most local London beer festivals), Olaf, told me the beer might have been infected a little, hence a lightly unconventional, sour touch to it. I liked it then. Now is time to see if the bottled version also lives up to its fame with its "original" taste... At 4.7%abv., bottled on 24/07 and expired on 23/08??... just one-month shelf-life?? Quite intriguing... served lightly-chilled in a "Gaffel Kölsch" Stange~~ (not that improper, I guess? 8-P)

A: dark tawny to chest-nut brown hue, elegant... the beer head comes effervescent and is held pretty well by the stange, presents a very tight, fine and creamy texture of off-white froth, slowly breaking down from below... carbonation is lively with streams of micro-scopic fizziness in the middle, skirted by med.-sized bubbly rockets... Looking great~~
S: complex maltiness, with caramely malts, and sweet+roasty nuts coating a much lighter grainy and slightly lemony lager malts and a floral+earthy+damp-leafy hoppy scent in the middle... underneath come also hints of woodiness like wood barrels, but provides just a subtle kick to the overall complexity.
T: incredibly intense and focused sour-bitter taste of old wood-barrels and dried hops makes a big entrance... slowly a milder and softer flow of nutty malts, delicately bitter edge of caramelised sugar with a faint kick of bitter chocolates ride on an upper track, while the mixed bitterness (like wood-chips, ground dried medicinal root-spices, mildly roast tea-leaves) simply retains its intensity and depth, creeping like an undercurrent down the wings and towards the very end of the palate... slightly roasty-dryish (from roasted malts) and profoundly chewy, bitter-hop aftertaste lingers forever, balancing the maltiness in the most subtle and elegant manner.
M&D: softly fizzy on the mouthfeel, medium-bodied and pretty clean on the texture so that the bitterness roams free all over the palate... The beer, surely the bitter-est German beer I've had, shows an equivalent length and depth like a really good English Best Bitter, albeit much milder in fruitiness and cleaner in texture, and added with a woody touch that is seldom imparted to most Bitters nowadays. I'm surprised to find it so thirst-quenching and quaffable. Compared to Schumacher Alt that I tasted at the GBBF this year (stillaged), this beer to Schumacher is like a dry-hopped Best Bitter to a fruity-malty Premium Bitter... if this weird comparison makes sense?! If it's available on cask/tap a little more often in this country, I'll certainly know where to look to get a perfect alternative to my Bitters~~ Lovely nectar, this is... but Damn! I should've bought a case!!

$3.49 for a 11.2 oz bottle at Merchant's. Pours out to a medium amber, burnt orange, forming a modest off-white soapy head with poor retention and absent lacing. Carbonation is moderate. The aroma is difficult to pick up as it is quite weak, bit there is lightly soured caramel and sweetened condensed milk with an otherwise clean ferment. The mouthfeel is smooth and light bodied with a woody dry finish. The taste is quite odd..there is a wierd chemical taste to it that I haven't tasted in a beer before...it tastes very medicinal and perfumy and soapy. Moderate woodsy bitterness.

I don't know what to make of this beer, but it's not good. I wouldn't buy it or recommend it. This beer tastes like carcinogens and death. Down the drain 1/3 of the way into it.

Malty aroma with a touch of sweet fruit on a deep inhale. A nice dark amber color. When the glass is sirled, a really intense sweetness is released, I can't place it, but wonderfully pungent. Thin off-white head. First taste on the palate is malt, a bit grainy and this is good. The hops give a nice medium bitterness and good froth heightens them to a strong hoppy finish. First Alt I've had from a bottle in a long time and this is obviously a flagship standard. Very good for quaffing 2+. I do not believe this is a bottle conditioned ale, but mine had some particles in it, no off-flavors though.

Uerige Alt (Düsseldorf-Altstadt) is best served at cool cellar temperatures (40-50°F) and enjoyed from a traditional short, straight-sided glass called a Stangen (pole) or Reagenzglas (test tube). Uerige Classic pours up sublime with a very light, bubbly carbonation that creates a low, off-whitish head atop a bright, copperish body. The head dissapates rather quickly leaving a ring of Düssel lace in its wake. The decidely malty & lightly grainy/nutty aroma has some fruitiness/esters (e.g. Bosc pear, peach pit) with a nice touch of spiciness from the traditional 'Noble' German hops. The taste starts off with a solid graininess/maltiness that gives way to a marked bitterness which carries into a crisp, dry, slightly nutty & decidely bittersweet finish. This firm, medium bodied indeginous beer of Düsseldorfer-Altstadt (Old Town) is undoubtedly one of my favorite styles to enjoy...as it lends itself nicely to quaffing in mass quantities. Enjoy this one anytime and if you find yourself getting hungry... try pairing a glass or two with some salty, freshly baked European (soft) pretzels w/ Düsseldorfer mustard (of course!) & "Spreewaelder" (pickled gherkins). Here's to "Grumpy" Wilhelm Cürten and his "Classic" Düsselbier!

S - Probably one of the coolest bottles i've seen. 330 ml bottle with a ceramic swing stopper. Shield label with a paper seal to determine if the top has been opened or not. Dat Leckere Droppke Seit 1862 raised on the side of the bottle along with the Uerige symbol raised as well.

A - Pours a reddish copper pour. Head is good and off-white, then it seals around the edge with a nice tight white ring. The lacing is nice and sticky and leaves a good web with each drink.

S - The nose is pretty roasty with some citrus and hop notes. Some seasonal spice is also there. I also smell a bit of chocolate, not much though.

T - Toasty sweet, a little heavy but very good. Not very complex, you can pick out the elements fairly easy. Very roasty with the citrus and hop cutting through near the end the most. The hop is pretty evident through the entire drink but mostly at the end.

M - Medium bodied with a nice, kind of creamy finish. Smooth over the palette and finishes fairly clean.

D - I dont know how many of these i could polish off in one night. I would say two, maximum. Its pretty roasty which i personally can only take so much of before they all start to taste the same. A very good beer, in moderation.

12 ounce bottle with ceramic swing-top stopper.

Red-amber slightly-cloudy body uner a tight off-white two finger head. Fades to a solid, fully-lasting lid, with lots of lacing.

Smell of nutty buttery hops. Walnut. Nice roasted malt. A lot going on here for a 4.5% beer. Lots of aroma.

Nice roasted malt well-blanced with pine and citrus hops for bitterness.

Pleasant enough palate: this feels a bit like what I might think of a "lite Maibock." Still, fairly thin.

Very drinkable. However, too pricey to have very many of them. Rare as hen's teeth in Colorado. Thanks to Indy's shbobdb for hooking me up.
