Uerige Alt ist das an Bitterstoffen reichste Bier Deutschlands. Trotzdem (oder gerade darum) ist dieses legendäre Düsseldorfer Altbier so vollmundig, aromatisch und bekömmlich.

Gebraut wird unsere obergärige Spezialität seit 1862 aus Gerstenmalz, Caramelmalz, Röstmalz, Doldenhopfen, Wasser – und mit unserer ganz besonderen Uerige-Hefe.

Unser Uerige Alt wird regelmäßig unter die zehn besten Biere Deutschlands gewählt. Es hat einen Alkoholgehalt von 4,7% und ein Mindestfrischedatum von acht Wochen.

The beer poured a copper color and formed a nice small bubbly white head that left trace lace as it subsided. A very small stream of carbonation was present. A heavy aroma of malt and hops, with floral and caramel elements, with a slightly nutty aspect. A flavor of malt, lightly of caramel and a nice hop aspect that relects well in the astrigent, bitter finish of this beer. Not quite up to the classic, but still a great beer.

Pours a lightly hazy ruby color. Topped by a cream colored head. A clean sweet malty aroma greats my nose, I also get some grassy herbal hoppy notes. I get hints of pine, flowers, and candied orange. The taste is a bit more washed out than the nose suggests. Though when tasted on draft at the source this is a completely different beer. It has a nice clean bitterness in the finish. The bitterness is preceded by a somewhat muted hop flavor that adds a bit of fruitiness to this beer, which shows what this beer could be like if sampled fresh at the brewery. Does have a nice level of maltiness here that is reminiscent of biscuits with a bit of caramel in it. It almost unfortunate that this is imported, this beer loses so much by leaving its home pub. If you really want to try this, and see that it is a completely different beer, go to the Altstadt of Düsseldorf.

The bottle came with a caveat from the vendor (Belmont Station): to be drunk very cold, not to let it warm up. This seemed strange to me, and perhaps the first warning sign that this sample was not all it could be. The beer pours a shadowy waxy amber with a substantial head that melts away and leaves a small amount of intricate lace on the glass. Nearly invisible musty aroma, which had all the fleeting substance of a disremembered dream. Some caramel malts up front, tempered with a winey roundness, a gentle nutty flavor, and a light apple quality. A deep-down roastiness reveals itself reluctantly, but adds a twinge of smoke and perhaps coffee. The taste, in itself, actually seems a bit hollow, with a rolling grassy bitterness in the finish that makes up a large part of the flavor. I found this to be an intriguing, enveloping beer, and was impressed by many of its complexities, but it wasn't as likeable as I hoped it would be. This bottle is the second time I've tried the beer; the first was a disastrously sour cask served at the Horse Brass. Based on the elusiveness of this bottled sample, I can only conclude that the beer is best when absolutely fresh, and travelling across both the Atlantic Ocean and the continental U.S. has done this beer absolutely no favors.

A 11.2 oz bottle that is dated as being bottled on 4/14/04. Pours a cardboard brown leaving a three finger head that is quite pillowy and foamy. First sip - Wow! A wonderful hops taste that remains on the edges of the tongue. Not a bitter hops taste but a green taste. I had a local version of Alt beer and it was much more watery and thin with little hops flavor. This has a little more depth and something going on with the hops. When I take a bit more of a bigger sip and swish it around I get a malty taste that is present but goes away much more quickly. I have avoided getting some imports lately as they seem to go stale by the time they get here but this one tastes very good in spite of being stored out of a cooler.

The swingtop popped loudly and I thought I might have a gusher so I quickly poured this ale and it revealed a rich nut-brown color with a white head that was thin yet resilient. It has a caramel aroma and a very interesting flavor. It begins very smoothly with sweet malt flavors which, slowly segue into a strong hop background that lingers and leaves the most wonderful hop flavor. This beer has a very nice flavor and I was surprised by the delicate earthiness of the German hops

Classic copper appearance. Slightly hazy. Nice looking dirty white head that has good retention. A bubbly collar leaves some nice lace. The aroma is sweet. Toffee and vanilla. Caramel syrup and raisin. Really appealing nose. The taste is nice as well. Toffee and caramel like malt notes. Raisin, plum and rum contribute in small proportions. Hopping adds a slight bitterness to the mix. Mouthfeel is slightly prickly and the body is a little better than medium. Very drinkable. Very good.

I need to add another "Head" to my Mount Rushmore of Alts. (The other 4 are Summit, Uerige Sticke, Moose Jaw and Sherlock's)

Thanks to cokes for yet another Uerige altbier.

LOve the bottle for this one..a work of art. Now the beer..lovelly looking ale it is an almost glowing amber with a huge sticky, frothy off white head...great lacing. Aroma is strong on the malts..some small hops too. Very soft malty flavour..semi dry finish,, some hints of honey and a small hoppiness at the very end. Very nice on the palate. Not the "biggest" beer in the world but certainly a top class Alt.

pours a rich copper with an off white head that lingers a little longer than a good night kiss.. Smells more malty than its cousin the Uerige Sticke. Taste is also more malty. Classic Alt style brew with nice brown ale caramel and toast notes. Not nearly as hoppy in the finish as the Sticke, but its pretty darn tasty. More in line with the tradional alt style. I prefer the Sticke, but the Classic proved worth the price. Pair it with some smoked gouda, or smoked almonds for a tasty treat

Pours a hazed yet glossy amber of indistinct colors - quite messy, but altbiers can be a bit strange. The head is the eeriest looking swiss cheese I’ver seen, slip-sliding around without leaving any lace on my glass.

Smells of minty hops, lots of minty hops, then something I'd have to call dirty cross-country running shoes, and dry smoked wood. Now I mean those in a good way, but I'm sure just quite different from when it first came shore. It settles into more crazy malt scents, the strangest roast and caramel sorts that I'm at a complete loss to describe. That and the minty hops were enough to make me quite happy.

To describe the flavor, for me, is easy because its piles of beautiful hops, minty, drying, luscious hops. So much flavor in those hops with of course requisite bitterness but a lecture in what low alpha-acid German-style hops can do. They throw off flavors like pepper and such, moving into the malts which are roasty yet very smooth at the same time. I guess because its an ale-ish lager, a hybrid of perfect balance like great baltic porters, that the malt runs back in forth between rugged roastiness of an ale and the rounded ease of a lager - the malty malts are roasty but not roasty, ya catch?

OK, now I think I understand altbiers, this is much better than anything I’ve yet had but I’ll take a wild guess its taste is extravagantly even better fresh in Dusseldorf. Yeah, so this bottle ain’t fresh, but I’ll be damned if it aint good.

Orangy copper color, clear and distinct with a flow of strong bubbles coursing up after every sip, small, densely sitting foam cap resides to a ever present hazy skim. Lacing in thin foamy sheets.
Aroma is toasty with nuts and caramel with a light herbal hop touch.
Taste is remarkably nice, very nice and smooth toasty factions of malts, some whole grain goodness, smokey barley seeps, light caramel and unsalted nuts gain and help smooth it out. Great herbal hop biting finish thats just a nudge spicy and holds on to the palate for a good ride. Like that finish.
Feel is about medium, starts a bit grainy with a solid hold and carbonation but drifts off some to a lighter finish, but thats where the nice hop finish does its thing so it more then makes up for it.
As far as quaffing, this stuff takes the cake, very smooth, a nice balance and meld of subtle flavors. Very dee-lish and drinkable; gone in no time cuz that 11.2 oz bottle ain't nearly enough.

A mildly hazy deep golden-copper. The head is ducked-down; a large-bubbled dirty white.
The nose is ripe with dry, grainy malts, and dampened sweet caramel ones. Along with loud herb-encrusted hopping.
Taste begins dry- pils-esque for a moment- and full of crackers. Deepens with caramel, but never turns very sweet. An absolute deluge of nuts rain down. Walnuts and almonds and Brazils. Hopping is crisp and loud. There is a sense of molten metal, gold perhaps, or brass. Back to nature upon conclusion, autumnal fields with withering flowers and wind-whipped brown grasses.
And it lingers.

Refined, then refined again.
Cite "lack of complexity"? You're wrong. This runs deeper than beers 3 times its size. The restraint and harmony here are unmatched.

If not for the price, this would be my "anytime" beer. The only two places $4 disappears faster are casinos and strip clubs. And it depends on the Strip Club.

Just goddamn delicious. Perhaps even more so than the Sticke.
Or perhaps not.
Both are Galaxy-class.

Not entirely deep in malt, but balanced nicely with a final focus on noble German hops and a pilsner-like dry bitter finish. The midpalate is most notable, fading out from light malt to a delicate green hoppiness -- almost like a Vienna lager with a subtle malt prescence that wants to go somewhere but never does. A touch nutty. Crisp.

Relax, relax.

Hazy, deep amber hue, solid, creamy white head.
Nose is a fine blend of hops, fruit, and malt, with sly, herbal, spice hints as well..nice.
Taste: yum. Yeah, that'll do it...hope I've hit the character minimum already, because that will do. Just ...yum.
Nice little, brisk hops, sweet, dusky flavor, a harmonious blend of the malty and fruity flavors, perfectly smooth and actively tasty. Dries out on the palate in a very reserved and classy fashion, leaves the palate whetted for another taste. Very tidy. Delivers the flavor, then heads out the door. This is a sophisticated, but un-showy ale, and I can see it being easily imbibed by the herren and damen back at the biergarten.
Nice, nice, nice!

Gratitude aplenty towards moulefrite for the bottles!

Ok, I have got the last bit of a small glass of Uerige Classic, been enjoying this for about an hour or so. Beer is the color of clear iced tea, I've had it out for so long now, all head and traces of it have vanished. Aroma is of rich malt...maybe a hint of some alcohol. Taste is pretty much all bitter juicy hop goodness with some ripe fruit and maybe a few tootsie rolls thrown into the wort. The hop juicyness lingers for a bit (it makes your mouth water pleasantly). The taste of this beer is remarkably long lasting, compared to so many other beers, it really does linger. Glad to have another German archtypical beer to review.

Poured from a cask gravity keg, it is a see-thorugh brown in color. The color of stained wood, it matched the bar. There was no head, and no lace (product of the gravity keg). The alcohol was noticeable on the tongue. It definitely came across as stronger than the 6% listed here by the taste, but not sure about the effect. Hops were slightly noticeable but they were woven around a fruity flavor, but not particularly sweet. Bit of a bite. The alcohol flavor seemed to prevail over all else. It would be a good sipping beer, and it was a good beer, but not really something I would go looking for in the future.

11.2ozer purchased as a single from the Spirit Haus, Amherst, MA, in a cool-looking swing-top. Date Code is 14 04.

Poured into a Middle Ages imperial half pint glass, formed a thick 1/2" light toffee head over a clear, caramel-hued brew. Laced well. Aroma is lightly of yeast and malts. Taste is light malts upfront, with hops dominating the latter portion of the flavor. Expected a bit deeper malt character, but what do I know? (Note - As it warmed, a nutty characteristic became more pronounced, nice.) Mouthfeel excellent, and drinkability is endless. Maybe I can get a friend stioned in the Air Force in Germany to bring me back some fresh Uerige, so I can see how it can possibly be even better...

The beer poured an deep golden amber color with just a slight haze. The head was yellow and moussy which laced the glass, but more than that stood tall from the first swallow to the last.

The aroma was nutty with a Munich character (even though no Munich is used in the beer). Also present were some caramel and chocolate notes. No distinct hop aromas.

The flavor was definitely bitter but well achieved with some munich, chocolate and caramel flavors. The bitterness was assertive and well done.

The finish was dry and hoppy bitter into the aftertaste. The body was medium.

The flavor is huge in this beer with only a 4.5% ABV. The aroma could be a bit larger, but the flavor is the surprize of the day. Have to give it the whole enchilada for the flavor.

11.2 ounce swing top bottle mostly in German. Purchased at A Southern Season in Chapel Hill, NC.

I have had both the bottle and a gravity fed cask (at the Old Bay in New Brunswick). Have to say that I think both were outstanding. This brew has a nice deep orange color, with a tannish head. The aroma has that peppery character that you get with a true Alt yeast strain. Flavor is very big for a 4.5% beer, with the malt and hops doing battle to the end. Easy to drink, if not tough to find.

This beer ist unbedingt one of the besten alt biers I've ever tried. The aromas suggest lemon-candied-hay, shoe polish, frische hopfen, gun smoke und zwar - wie ist es moeglich - "brass sap."
Bottled on April 14, 2004.
On the palate it is generous with noble, walnut and cedar tannins that provide a base for emminently flowery green flower flavors. Silky and eager to melt, the texture is a dream.
For dry, nutty, brew art... this may be it.
As long as you like it herb, zehr trocken, or, in other words, as dry as an espresso-covered pine forest.

This beer comes in a unique bottle that looks just like the Sticke picture.

It pours a slightly less than clear copper brown with a decent head that laces a bit.

Smells like bread, rootbeer, and honey.

Taste is refreshingly bitter with a long long clean bitter aftertaste. The rootbeer taste is ever so slight. The clean and crisp bitterness of the beer makes me give it a 5.

Mouthfeel is nearly perfect IMHO. Carbonation is smooth and light and the bitter and clean taste is great.

At 4.5% alcohol, it is an extremely drinkable beer. Give me another!

(Note: Don't try this one after having something BIG. The nuances of the beer are hidden if your palate has been exhausted by something like an Imperial Stout.)

Good lord this is a pretty glass of suds! Just got in a case of this rather hard to come by brew and am pleased as punch. And, speaking of punch this baby gives a Champagne like burst when opened from its slumber in its awesome flip top format. The color is of the purest copper, and a sticky head with gracious stick and lace adds to the very elegant picture. A real treasure to behold. Ahh, and the aromas here are pure magic-clean as a whistle with fresh bready/malty nuances, gentle fruity esters, and magestic hop notes to boot. The mouthfeel is clean and crisp-quite dry and the finish is rather hoppy. Is this the ultimate session beer or what? Them damn Germans know how to make beer. Honestly, I can't think of a better beer for the style.

Semi dark brown colored malt body with a thick off white head. This alt covered all the spectrums of the other alts I had in Dusseldorf. Had a good hop nose from dry hopping? mixed in with a leathery, dank basement smell from the wooden kegs. Malty sweet but clean in the back of the throat in the beginning with a fresh hop flavor coming through in the middle. Strong hop presence in the bittering which left the mouth feeling dry and the tounge just a touch burned out from the hops. The best one I had in Dusseldorf.
