Taste is toffee, caramel, toasted malt with grapefruit and other citrus hops showing up at the end. This is one of the hoppier American amber ales that I have had. Not sure if I would get this again, but it is interesting.

bottled 9/30/13 a picked it up in Maryland just a week or so later

eyes...
sizzlin' head, nice red to amber hue with a tornado of bubbles swirling about the real estate in my glass, the head settles in to around one finger with a nice meniscus of cling on the sides, a good looking example of the general style

nose...
semi-musty dry biscuit malts, slight floral spice and honey notes, after sitting for a few I do pick up the grape almost semi-cherry like notes

taste etc...
the carbonation seems low in the mouth yet gassy in the stomach...? this does not possess the typical nice spiciness I enjoy in the style, instead there is a strange bitterness, there is also a strange sickly sweet flavor, I guess I am not a fan of the hops used here? the body is pretty good in terms of weight, you get some grape flavor but it is pretty mild, this is pretty underwhelming especially if you are going to go all imperial with it.

verdict?
this one did not work for me. that's all. were you expecting more? sorry, so was I (sad face)

Poured from a 22 oz brown bomber into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Bottled on 09/30/13 stamped on bottle neck. Purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Super-clear amber with 1-finger off-white/oatmeal colored head with below-average retention but some sudsy lacing left at the top of the glass.

S: Toasted caramel maltiness is most dominant but is given a run for its money by the floral, light citrus hoppiness. No yeast or alcohol character detected.

T: The flavor is a good reflection of the aroma, but the alcohol component of the flavor comes through too strong with a floral, rose-water like alcohol note that clouds the floral, citrus hoppiness and the toasted caramel malt character. The alcohol is no doubt warming and is not solventy, but the floral, rose-cherry/berry character is undeniable. No real yeast esters are present. Bitterness is moderate.

M: Good medium-bodied feel with even carbonation.

O: A pretty good imperial red ale although the alcohol character is a bit too strong and blunt for my liking.

Enjoyed this beer on tap at Duclaw in Bowie Maryland out of a pint glass.

A: Pours a copper hue with a thin white wispy head that quickly dissipates.

S: Hoppy aroma with a malty background.

T: Hoppy, Hoppy, Hoppy with a great malt background and finishes on the tart side of hoppy.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Nice brew – super hoppy and enough alcohol to make it interesting.
