Bottled 1/31/14 appears dark almost black minimal ruby highlights this stout, sports a 1/2 an inch dark tan head with speckled faint lacing. Aromatics offer up to the senses, smoked peppers in this case chipotle, with a dark chocolate dryness. It's trying to express some mole' sauce notes, with the flavors but doesn't execute that well. Flavor wise there's virtually no sweetnes dark dry roasted malt lingering bitterness with a creeping chipotle smoked chili pepper heat coming on in the back of the throat, very faint compared to extreme chili beers easy to drink just wish the flavors were more cohesive together. The bigger the sip of this beer the more heat that comes with it and definitely dries the palate out a good bit, the dark chocolate roasts have a lingering bitterness as well. Carbonation flows nicely medium to full bodied but it becomes a bit much about half way through a 12 ounce pour. I'm glad I tried it but I definitely didn't need a whole six pack of this one!

12 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter

A: Very dark brown with almost no head but with a swirl you get a tiny brownish tan head that dissipates quickly only leaving a collar. No lacing.

S: Slightly sweet. It smells like the wort for this chocolate cherry vanilla porter I just brewed. I get almost no chocolate or spice, but there is this interesting Mexican (abuelita) hot chocolate. It smells really good but not how I would expect it to smell. I can't really place the smell.

T: I only get a bit of chocolate with just a slight spice/pepper/heat that is immediate and lingers throughout leaving just a mild tingling.

M: Very smooth and slick. It is very thin, but I don't mind it here.

O: This is one of DuClaw's better offerings and that is a lot coming from me. However, this is just a re-release of their 2012 H.E.R.O. (Chocolate Chipotle Stout).

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of coffee and chili's. Taste is of hot peppers, some coffee, a bit on the spicy side. Not getting any of the chocolate advertised on the label. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall, I wouldn't want a steady diet of it, but is a unique beer worth trying.

Pours a deep black with no head. Aroma is of sweet cacao, dark malt with a kind of sweet fruity peppery scent. Taste is same as aroma with mild sweet spice notes and bitterness on the end for balance, a bit of smoke. Mild peppery heat with chocolate malt on the finish. A medium body on the palate, slightly creamy with good carbonation. An interesting combination, not too sweet or spiced. Overall an good drinking brew

P- Als of Hampden

A- motor oil black with a tan head. about half a finger and it sticks nicely to the mug.

S- cocoa and dark roasted malts.

F- cocoa and dark roasted malts with hints of the chili pepper towards the back end of the flavor.

M-spicy and chocolatey...not bad but im not a spicy type of guy. Medium bodied and not as thick as I thought it was going to be.

O- an average stout. once again if you like spicy this is a beer for you but it just doesn't gel as well as it should and it seems to me that its too much.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass. Bottled Jan 31st 2014.

Dead and nearly lifeless. Out of the bottle comes out slick, and produces barely... barely a half finger of head which disappears almost instantly. It does manage though to keep a thin tan collar but that's about it. Thick, a little morbid, with a dark walnut brown body. Tipping and a little bit of tilt show a wet and watery collar and no sticky lace at all.

Nose though delivers as promised on the label. Good roasted malts, hints of faint char with a nice crackly grain. Faint pepper heat, mild smoke, not distracting. Chocolate angle is there a hint of bitterness and dark but very buried. Regardless all balanced nicely on the bouquet.

Palate is milky slightly but thick. Hints at lactose almost cola character sweetness but has some depth, but almost too much depth. Crackling roast grains, and a very good base of heat. The body though is lacking in a strange combination of milk stout cola, and thick chocolate syrup qualities, with lots of flat lifeless feel no doubt due to carbonation issues. Lingering chile heat, and nice classic chipotle smoke on the finish. Some strange mint like action a bit also as it warms no doubt from some hop angle out of nowhere. Not too hot or boozy either.

Overall though even though it comes off kind of flat and syrupy the roast and pepper quality is actually very well integrated. This is not though a real enjoyable beer to drink though because it comes off too syrupy and lifeless. It barely has any beer like character in the palate, never have I had a mouthfeel just so effect the overall quality of the beer. It comes off as more of drinking flavored malt extract with some pepper.
