12 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter (3/26/14)

A: Quickly dissipated head with almost no lacing. Only a slight head upon swirling. Dark brown with an amber tinge.

S: Lots of coconut and caramel with just a bit of chocolate. The smells get a lot better with warmth. It is predominately that of caramel, but roasted/burnt/caramelized. I get a lot of flan/custard/creme brulee.

T: A nice caramel flavor to this. Tastes like a caramel/sweet brown ale. I get almost no coconut, and probably wouldn't know it was here if it wasn't advertised as such. Coconut is a subtle flavor and hard to get across. I could see it as being the roasted coconut on top of a dessert.

M: Quite slight with only a tinge of carbonation.

O: Decent. I suspect this will become somewhat popular due to the name, advertising and marketing behind it, just like with Sweet Baby Jesus. I'm steadily going through their stuff so that I can give them a fair shot, me living/being from MD and all.

A: Dark coppery pour with a dark beige, thin, whispy head that was opaque in the vessel. No lacing, some signs of carbonation around the edges.

S: Aroma of dry scotch and caramel, spicy with some fruity sultanas and strong indications of rootbeer candy. Some sugar-rum coffee additions.

T: Deep caramelized sweetness, peat with a light smokiness, originally mistook this for a scotch ale at first. Sweet figs and raisins with a touch of honey-munich sweetness. Toasty buttered oak, hazelnut coffee with some butterscotch sweetness. Lastly there is some sweet cola and rootbeer twang on the finish.

M: Buttery creamy, mid-heavy thickness, that was softly carbonated.

O: Overall a sweetly caramelized malting similar to a scotch ale, a sweet brown ale that may be a bit much in multiples but is interesting for a take.

A - Slightly less than a finger's worth of fizzy off-white colored head... Minimal retention gives way to a thin yet full veil of lacing... The color is a deep dark slightly menacing brown... There is a decent bit of light that leaks in around the edges... Largely still with a couple of small bubbled carbonation streaks seen towards the top of the glass...

S - Wow... Like walking into a gourmet candy store... This literally smells like a freshly opened box of Samoa girl scout cookies... Bursting at the seems with coconut... Sweet milk chocolate... Undertones of caramel and toffee... This one smells 100% percent like desert and 0% like beer... Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing at this point...

T - The sweetness begins to dissipate on the palate a bit... The coconut is dialed up several notches... The milk chocolate is dialed down a slight bit... There is a very subtle hop presence which really challenges the palate and is almost slightly off-putting... There is also a light smoke presence on the finish... I expected very sweet and slightly cloying, but this one is off the charts...

M - On the lighter side of medium bodied... The flavor profile makes this one a sipper... Brisk carbonation... Interesting, but rather challenging... The finish is slightly unpleasant - inducing an almost cotton mouth like presence...

D - A unique marriage of beer and desert... The aroma is dynamite, but the overall flavor profile struggles a tiny bit... This one gets an "A" for effort, but a "C+" for execution... Another funky offering from DuClaw, a brewery who's experimentation really impresses me time and time again... However, the experimentation doesn't always work... Recommended for the curious and those who want to see what the outer boundaries of beer look like... However, not sure this is something I will seek out again on my own...
