It pours a yellow gold with no lace left from the head. There is an almost tutti frutti smell to this one, it puts me very faintly in mind of the milk after a bowl of Froot Loops cereal. The flavour is a mild, citrusy bite with faint berry (particularly blueberry) hints. The texture is smooth but unremarkable.

12 fl. oz. bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

This beer pours a light shade of amber with golden highlights. It is topped with an inch of off white head that disappears quickly and leaves no lacing.

It smells like blueberry along with some lemon citrus notes.

The taste starts out like your average blueberry ale, but then the citrus flavor kicks in giving it a little something to separate it from the rest.

Medium mouthfeel

This is a decent blueberry ale. I put it slightly above average do to having a little more flavor than your average blueberry ale.

Had this out of a bottle for the first time last night up at the Cloverleaf. It's not something that I would have normally ordered but it was on their summer PhD list and it seemed like it would be light enough while still having a ton of body. This turned out to be slightly artificial tasting but it needed more hops and wheat in order to stand out more. As it was, I thought that this was decent for the summer but was a bit too heavy when it came to the blueberry flavor.

The pour to this was decent - as the beer had a somewhat golden hue that was cloudy but still had a bit of clarity to it. The head was present but not full and subsided fairly quickly once this settled down. Lots of blueberry in the nose to go with some wheat with both of these also being present in the taste. The meyer lemon wasn't terribly strong but it was there and somewhat more tart than I would have expected. No doubt that the saving grace of this beer was the presence of the pale and wheat malt, which kept the somewhat contrived feel of the blueberry and lemon from taking over. This was juicy, fairly well-rounded, and easygoing without having any particular qualities that stood out.

On second thought, the relatively low alcoholic content of this was something that was noteworthy as I would have been able to polish off another in a sitting if it were possible. Not a lot of hops here but if you're looking for a summer beer with a nice body and fruit flavor to it, this would be a good choice. Not as good as the Oberon or Hop Sun as this straddled the line between a Pale Wheat Ale and a Fruit beer, but this beer ended up with just enough going for it.

Pours Crystal clear, with soapy white head that does manage to have some lasting power.
Smell of blueberry hits as I open the bottle. If I look at this as a pure fruit beer, the smell is nice. However, it's about the only note in the smell. There's a hint of cereal grain, almost makes me think of Booberry cereal (but not really sweet in nature).

Taste, again as a fruit beer, is ok. Fairly clean opening, with the blueberry present and growing thoughout the taste. I get the lightest bit of orange in some sips of a warmer beer. There is a light grassy note that hits early to mid taste and provides a counter to the blueberry, but not necessarily a great one. Feels on the light and watery side, not expected in a wheat beer.

Just not at all what I expected from a wheat beer. Some ok fruit notes, but the combination with the choice of bittering flavor didn't work for me.

Had from a keg at a tasting. The blueberry flavor was nice and subdued. The base was ok but nothing spectacular. Not a bad beer at all but nothing to brag about.

Deep gold color, with slight haze. Slight Blueberry smell. Faint taste of blueberry with a few citrus notes. Decent wheat beer, could be refreshing on a hot day.

The taste is very much fresh blueberries and wheat with light lemon zest. This is not the most complex beer like what I am used to from DuClaw. That said, it is exceptionally tasty. This is a beer that I could easily do a six of on a sunny afternoon.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, cloudy, golden/lemon-straw color with a quarter of a finger of white-colored head quickly dissolved away into a very thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Very wheaty and grassy up front, followed by lots of blueberry, lemon and lemon peel, honey and honey-suckle.

Taste: Very nice actually. Subtle notes of wheat, clover, grass, much less than I was expecting actually, followed by some hone-like sweetness and lots of blueberry and lemon zest. Quite nice flavors.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and a little creamy, as there’s very little to no carbonation. With an ABV of 5.0%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: Wow! A whit beer I like!! Nice flavors matched with a pleasant, creamy mouthfeel. Quite good!

12 oz.

Pours a clear golden with a white lacing for a head.

Smells of citrus and grassy malts with juicy and fresh berries throughout.

Tastes of grassy malts with lemon citrus and lemon grass flavorings and a slight banana. Slight berry tartness in the finish.

Medium body with stinging carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

A very nice light refreshing summery ale that quenches the thirst and goes down easy. The fruit flavoring is subtle as it should be.

Had to do this one since its summer time. Good beer to have outside on those hot days! Overall not too impressive but I did find things that I was impressed by. When poured it has a light amber color with a small fizzy head. Nothing too eye catching. However, the smell was absolutely great! It reminded me of a blueberry Poptart fresh out of the toaster! Bold sugary blueberry with a smooth citrus finish. The actual taste itself, has more of a sugary kick. I was hit by soft blueberry with a foamy citrus undertone. Its very sugary! So much so in fact, that by the time I was finishing the beer I had a hard time tasting all the flavors. Still nice though! but nothing outstanding. Just remember to pour it hard to get that head and enjoy that amazing smell!

A: translucent amber/orange, no head, decent lacing but fades almost immediately
S: pretty much just blueberry, with a hint of malt
T: blueberry, citrus, malt, slightly bitter, lingering blueberry finish
M: thin-bodied, light, a bit of citrus bite
O: Not a bad blueberry flavor, but a bit of a weak gimmick.

S: Blueberry and malt aroma.

T: Blueberry flavor with a wheat malt background and finishes on the dry side of fruity.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation

O: Not a huge fan of these blueberry brews.

The beer poured a light gold with a white head. The aroma was of malt and hops. The taste is of sweet malt and just enough hops to balance. The feel is light and dry. This was a wonderful beer that gave the best of a wheat and left you wanting more, definately one I wish was one of their regulars.

Fell's Point Location

Clear gold, with a medium sized white head. Looks a bit washed out.

Very mild aroma. Sweet and citrusy.

Flavor again very mild. More bitter than sweet, citrusy in character.

Light bodied. Medium carbonation. Fairly dry.

A good summer beer, but not much here to get you excited about.

Poured from a growler provided by KMWeaver, This was a good beer to start quite a night. The Liquid was a less then fizzy yellow, with ok carbonation. The head was a soft one finger white and left just a bit of lace.

The smell was good, light clean and a hint of something light vanilla or honey, kind of sweet. Bready like a classic Italian loaf this is a great lunch brew.

The taste was nice quite good, The dab of sweet honey/vanilla was just the right amount.

The mouthfeel is good. lighter then medium but a clean easy swill.

The drinkability was very high. This is a go anywhere drink anytime brew. Great choice! Prosit, MK

It's back. And there are a lot of smiles out there. DuClaw recently juggled their "permanent" beer line-up by replacing Kangaroo Love (the Australian-style lager that was a long-standing staple on tap for many of us lightweights) with what was once an extremely popular seasonal, "Funk," an American Wheat. The web site says it's back by popular demand... and I'm one of those who demanded--er, I mean, asked Jim the Brewer nicely in an e-mail. [But I'm not the biggest fan... I know one person who practically danced when he found out it was back on-tap full-time. And then he brought me a growler full. Thanks JB!]

Rich, clear yellow hue, small tan head that dissipated quickly but laced the glass nicely. Smell is mostly wheat/malt with tiny bit of hops in the nose. From first taste to last, rich mouthfeel with nice balanced carbonation. Taste is wheat, biscuity malt with just enough hops to linger a bit on your tongue, but not enough for what I'd call a real hops "taste." But who cares? It tastes great. Nice balanced, yet mild flavor rendering the beer extremely (a perfect 5) drinkable. So drinkable, in fact, you have to watch out a bit. It's so smooth it goes down very easily.

Nice balance to DuClaw's offerings!!

Beer was on-tap, poured a pale yellow color not unlike mass produced fizzy yellow beer. Some head. Smell was absent, presumed missing. No hint of the honey that was claimed to be present. Taste was again, much closer to the fizzy yellow stuff than what I would call an American wheat. If I squinted my taste buds, I could almost imagine a hint of the honey. Beer did have good carbonation, which helped liven up the mouthfeel. I was glad when this pint was finished. I'm Not sure if the Funk kegs got lost on the way to the pub-restaurant from the brewery and were replaced en-route by the yellow fizzy stuff, but I wouldn't be surprized.

Funk is no longer what it used to be. It's now a "blueberry citrus wheat". I'm not so fond of it; I think it's a touch too bitter, and the blueberry and citrus flavors compete rather than complement. I'd now rate it at a 3.8 but I've left my old review for posterity...

From their website:
Style: American Style Wheat
Color: Light Golden
Hop Variety: Liberty
Grains: Pale Malt, Wheat Malt
Other Ingredients: Clover Honey
Bitterness Units: 16 IBUs
Gravity: 12 plato
Alcohol Content: 4.8% abv

This American wheat suggests a little more character in it's name than actually exists - but that's a good thing! It's a clean, fresh, lightly sweet and mildly wheat-ish ale that's quite enjoyable and refreshing. Its golden body teems with fine bubbles beneath a short head of creamy bright white foam. It's cushiony-looking head drops shortly to a creamy collar, but it does leave some minor spotty lace as it goes. The nose is quite clean; and expresses just a mild, sweetish maltiness. The body is medium and it's very fine, gently effervescent carbonation tingles the tongue before softening to leave it smooth and mildly creamy across the palate. The flavor delivers a clean, fruity, and mildly wheatish malt that's lightly sweet due to a small addition of honey. It's not too sweet, however, as it's balanced by a delicate, underlying bitterness that leaves it dry in the finish. Quite nice! A nice summer beer that has enough malt character to keep you coming back for more.
