Rich toasted malt and caramel tasting. Very smooth beer that hits all of the right notes and is way above average. I could do several if I was in a marzen type of mood.

Pours into my glass with an orange body amber glowing hue with a big frothing off white head, call it khaki beige. Head retention is good, lacing is left behind scattered around the glass in uneven patterns.

Aroma deep malted caramel notes, but that’s about it a hint of earthiness these may be hops I’m detecting but it seems very one dimensional.

Flavor is boring a hint of caramelized malts, clean lagering finish barely any earthy hop notes it’s just too one dimensional this is not case worthy too many better options out there.

Mouthfeel, is light to medium bodied even flowing carbonation goes down easily without challenging the senses too much.

Overall, not my bag I love the style if it has those complex malts that make you really appreciate this style.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a semi-cloudy, deep golden amber color with a quarter of a finger of off-white head that completely dissolved away to nothing.

Aroma: Malty, very malty, but also very floral. Lots of cover and surprisingly, alcohol notes.

Taste: Very tasty! Malty, with lots of freshly baked bread and soft pretzels, but spicy too. Notes of clove, cinnamon, all-spice, nutmeg, black pepper, clover, honey, caramel.

Mouthfeel: Medium, with practically no carbonation, which is odd, as past year’s versions were extremely carbonated. With an ABV of 5.8%, there is just the slightest hint of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a very good Oktoberfest beer. I really enjoy the spiciness of the beer which is nicely balanced with a great malty backbone. Delicious. Always an addition to my Oktoberfest rotation.

Honestly there's not really much to say about this beer on the positive side. Very bland for an Octoberfest. Pours copper color, more carbonated than most micro domestics. Slightly sweet smell, very German style taste and might even use malts from there which is the only thing powerful about the beer. Watery body doesn't leave much on the palate after going down. No distinct note of hops.

Its clear, deep-copper body has an orange-ish cast and reveals gleaming ruby highlights. Its creamy off-white head dwindles away to a wide collar and leaves only minor lacing. The nose delivers a mildly sweet, delicately fruity, and lightly toasty maltiness. The body is medium, and its fine carbonation gives a caress to the tongue before fading smoothly away. Malt dominates the flavor profile with a good blend of Vienna and Munich malts (too much Vienna can be a bit too toasted and harsh). It's bitterness is well balanced and its floral, grassy, and herbal hop flavors don't step too far into the limelight. Well balanced and very drinkable. It pairs well with their Turkey Melt on a Pretzel Roll sandwich! Worth trying.

12 oz bottle into a mug.

Pours a clear copper, with 1 ½ fingers of foamy off-white head. This retains with a thin foaminess, especially on the edges, that leaves back just some light spotty lace. This actually gets pretty dead looking about half way through the glass. The aroma smells sweet and spicy in the nose, with notes of earthy citrus and toast underneath. This has a bit of a plastic or medicinal off-note to it as well, which mostly adheres itself to that sticky combo of toasty sweetness and citrus.

The taste is a little more green feeling with earthy hops, before a big flush of toasted sticky sweetness comes in. This is fairly bitter and a little spicy on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and softer feeling up front before firming up a little more on the tongue. Unfortunately, the overall carbonation here seems to match that mediocre retention, with this mostly sitting in the mouth with a flat heft at times.

I’ve had this on draft several times over the years but I don’t ever remember this beer being this mediocre before. It just doesn’t pack much crispness to it at all, which leaves the flavors here sitting too loose and the overall feel too thick and chewy. What a shame. It seems like this isn’t translating very well to the bottle.

A reddish orange, with a thin white head. Sweet and spicy, taste and malt. This ones not too complicated which is not a bad thing all the time. This one simply tastes good has a medium body and fairly good drinkability. It goes excellent with a ultimate grilled cheese sandwich.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a bronze color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of mild malts, some grains. Taste is malty, caramel, a bit of green apples, a touch of hops. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent effort but doesn't stand out from other Oktoberfest beers.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Sam Smith pint glass. Moderate hand. Bottled 07/17/14.

A: Hazy, copper-amber body. 1 finger of coarse, off-white head. Average retention. Minimal lacing.

S: Roasted malt with an unusual peanut presence. Some hay. Bread. Indistinct fruit. Brown sugar. Light overall, but nice enough.

T: Round, moderately sweet malt and nuttiness to start. Faint corn. Slow ramping of bittering hops to a semi-dry finish. Lingering bread and noble-type hops in the aftertaste. Minimal alcohol presence.

M: Moderate carbonation with a medium body for the style. Slightly prickly initially.

O: Average Oktoberfest with some decent malt notes. I'm good for a few of these, although I'd have to say it's a bit over-hopped.

Poured from the bottle into a pilsner style glass.

Pale bronze body, quite clear with lots of orange color and hues to it. Very little rising carbonation, and hardly a finger of light tan is made off the pour. Manages to leave a ring like thin collar while drinking.

Faint light sticky like toffee malts, but a very wet grainy smell. A bit muted and closed.

Palate comes with a bit of prickly carbonation. Bock like malts but a little more thin and coffee sensing finish a little. Grainy sticky quality and an almost chalky finish with lots of dry character almost nutty tannic in a sense. Mild caramel and slightly wet.

Overall a passable marzen but one that I am probably not going to be in the mood to want to have again given other choices.

Had this on tap at the Fell's Point location on 12/31/05. I was a little apprehensive since this was the October release, but I missed that party and figured I would give it a try. Pours a clear reddish copper, a thin white head that doesn't last long, no lacing Nose is all malt, rather assertive, slightly toasted, slightly nutty--smells good. Taste is very malty, caramel and nutty, somewhat buttery, and with a slight tinny off-taste on the finish. This is on the thin side of medium and just doesn't have the mouthfeel that some better Oktoberfests have. I'll have to try this fresher next year, but from my sample, this is one of thier few seasonals that really failed to impress.

This beer is a deep orange, leaning towards amber with a 1 1/2 finger head. light on the carbonation bubbles.

The aroma is citric with dark doughy bread and a touch of molasses.

The taste a bit more nondescript than the nose. Sweet, toasty malt and light citric hops. Lightly bitter in the end.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, Drying on the finish.

An easy drinker. Nothing outstanding, but it has good balance. A decent session beer.

Poured from a bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy reddish brown with two fingers of soda like head that leaves a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Sweet and malty with a strong smell of cherries.

Taste: Thank goodness it isn't as sweet as it smells. Very malty, and the cherry from the smell is still here. The sweetness continues throughout, and a bitterness shows up at the end of each sip.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a lot of carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I would have liked this to be a little more delicate. Not bad, but there are other options I prefer.

highly touted based on the huge sign at the front door, table topper and insert to the menu. I thought it would be a nice second beer while at the pub.

A - Reddish / brown with a thin off white head.
S - sweet caramel malts and not much else.
T - Similar to the nose but with an underlying yeast note. Not as clean a lager finish as I was hoping.
M - medium bodied, medium carbonated, sweet and clean finish.
D - Nice enough but a bit out of it's element when paired with the jambalaya.

A pleasant enough beer but not one I'd hype as was done at the restaurant. That said, it must work for their customer base as the special pint glass promotion sold out a couple of days into the release according to the waitress.

Sampled on tap at Fells Point location for the 2005 release (Great t-shirt for the Mad Bishop, by the way) inside the actual ceramic Mad Bishop pint glass and in a normal pint. Poured a dark brown with amber highlights and a finger of off white head. Reduced for light lacing.
Aroma was all malt. Dark roasted and nutty qualities, but very aromatic.
Flavor was very nice. Extremely rich malt profile to the brew. Very nutty, with some cocoa and dried fruits as well. Light floral hoppiness on the finish. Medium bodied, but kept wanting more due to the very tasty flavor. Of the three oktoberfest I had last night, the other two being "German," this was surprisingly the best.
ABV was a lot lighter than I usually expect for an oktoberfest beer, but it was very light and easy drinking. With the great flavor, this one was quite a drinkable brew. If the atmosphere inside the bar didn't suck so bad, we'd have had several more. Yet another quality seasonal from the brewpub.

Deep amber.orange with medium head, dissipating within minutes to a very thin body, minimal head.Ok look, nothing special.

Aromas of grains, faint hops, some breadiness/biscuits, some nuts. Nothing too impressive.

Taste is same as nose, with medium/light body. thin carbonation.Crisp, clean, nothing special or original.

An average American version of the Marzen/Oktoberfest style. German ones are defintley better, but this is OK for American.

Appearance: Coppery/gold with slight white head.

Smell: Malt and a phenolic fruitiness followed by a whiff of hops.

Taste: Sweet caramel malt with a hint of plum and a touch of spice.

Mouthfeel: Creamy and round in the mouth.

Pours a way overcarbonated and almost infected looking fizzy bubbly head that fades pretty quickly after rising 3+ fingers very quickly after pouring only 2/3 of the bottle into my large snifter glass. The beer is a hazy ruby red colored.

Nose is loaded with sweet things, plenty of reddish caramel malts, maybe a hint of munich malt, plenty of syrupy aromas as well, caramel, candy syrup, and a bit of malt extract. No real hops either.

Taste is similar, starting with plenty of malts, reddish malts, caramel, red candy syrup, syrupy flavors, malt extract, etc. Then a bit of an earthy infection like flavor, not funky just bad yeast like an infection is starting but not sure. Tons of carbonation like my sip is just foam that I'm trying to taste. A bit almost oxidized as well. A slight bitterness comes out on the finish with a slight earthy hop and sticky syrupy mouth. And absolutely no lager flavors. The burps (and there are plenty of em with that much carb) bring a stale earthy hop and bad infected yeast.

Mouth... I can't really tell the body much but its about medium bodied and the carbonation is... well lets just say its like Mumbai or Shanghai in population density of bubbles. Way too much. Also sticky mouth.

Bleh, I think this is a drain pour. Very syrupy, semi sweet, lots of candy and syrups, no real hops until the stale earthy hop finish. Also either infection or just done horribly wrong, like lagered at a horrible temperature, not sure but a bad yeast flavor. Just wrong.

I am getting the hang of this new way of doing reviews, which is helpful during the ongoing Bottle Purge of the Summer of 2014.

I do so love watching the pseudo-cascade when I employ a heavy-handed pour! In this case, it settled into three-plus fingers of dense, tawny head with great retention. I am really liking the visuals on these Oktoberfests! Color was again a Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with unbelievable NE-plus quality clarity. I could see into the future through this fluid, which I respect. Nose had a more pronounced malt quality, but still with a grassiness. Mouthfeel was thick, dense, and full. The taste was nutty, biscuity, some honey and hay or grass. I thought of biscuits straight out of the oven, drizzled with honey and taken out in the field to eat so as not to make a mess in the house. This was not unusual at my late maternal grandmother's house during the summer when I was a kid. Both of my grandmothers were excellent cooks, BTW. Great lacing began to appear as I drank, lost in the reverie of my memories. Finish was semi-sweet and although German purists might find fault with it, I liked that the sweetness often found in the style was kept to a minimum.

12 oz bottle. Pours amber with long lasting, foamy white head. Aroma is of grassy hops, caramel malt and sourdough. Body is full and smooth. Grassy hops, caramel malt, grain and some salt fill the mouth. Finish is medium and almost dry. OK brew.

Pours copper in color with golden edges. The half finger of off-white head dissipated quickly leaving only fizzy bubbles behind. The bready notes in the nose were very subtle and only really came out as this offering warmed. Caramel malt is present but the overall flavor profile is thin. The finish starts off with a touch of something sweet and then mild dry bitterness.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Pours a deep orange-mahogany color with a very thin white head that dissipates almost immediately.

S: Musty malty aroma that is a little sweet on the nose.

T: A mild sweet brew with musty malt flavor similar to the aroma. Finished slightly on the dry side.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Just an ok brew. Nothing special.

A: The beer pours a clear light amber color with a finger of off-white head.

S: Slightly metallic on the aroma and overall very bland. A light nuttiness as well as a bit of stale bread and toffee. Really not very pleasant.

T: The flavor has sort of a spoiled nut flavor to it. A little bit of garbage in there too. Some toffee and bready malt flavor, a little bit of yeast, and some apple esters.

M: Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation.

O: Not what I was expecting from an Oktoberfest.

12oz bottle poured into a Brooklyn snifter.

A - Pours a very clear, bright amber color. Three thick fingers of foamy head rests on top of the beer...decent staying power, falls over a minute or two to the surface leaving behind wisps of soapy lacing on the glass.

S - Quite fruity, almost fruit punch-like. Light grassy hops, sugary sweetness, touch of grain, low level bready aromas and light caramel.

T - Malty sweet with some biscuity aspects, quite bready, a bit of toasted malts, clean hop bitterness.

M - Rather high carbonation for the sytle...gives a foamy feel. Body is medium. Nicely balanced between malt and hops...malt just winning out by a little bit.

O - A very bready oktoberfest...well developed malt profile with decent complexity - bread, toasted malts, maltose sweet, biscuity - quite nice. Pretty good American example of the style.

On tap at the brewery in MD. Pours clear amber with a small, fizzy white head, low retention with light lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel, toasted, nutty), light hops (earthy, herbal), and average esters (apple/pear) with notes of plum and dates. Flavor is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel, toasted), average hops (earthy, herbal), and average esters (apple/pear) with notes of dates; clean lager character. Medium body and carbonation, low warmth and creaminess with a sweet finish.
