Had this on tap at Duclaws yesterday. It was a decent Hefeweizen, nothing special though. The appearance was a little unusal, a different shade of yellow than I've seen before in a beer. The smell was okay.. banana, grass/straw/hay, clove, sugar, and lemon. I could drink another, but I don't think I'd recommend it necessarily. (Note: when mixed with lemonade, this beer tastes a lot like "Miller Chill" or "Bud Light Lime.")

12oz bottle poured into a Pint Glass.

Pours a hazy, dark orange with a thin white head that settles to a thin white ring. Crisp aromas of honey, banana, and a good amount of clove. Taste follows the nose closely, lots of banana and wheat with a touch of spicy clove. Mouthfeel is crisp and light, with a thin body and high carbonation. Overall a very drinkable, solid Hefeweizen, I could drink a few of them!

Smells of clove and spices. Overbearing malt sweetness from what I'm guessing is just a cheap LMS. (Shouldn't this style be brewed with real grains? I think it should...)

Tastes like bananas or at least artificial banana flavoring... I'm not sure if you've ever tasted banana laffy taffy... yeah. Some clove and spice notes. All the flavors are obviously coming out of little clear bottles, not from natural ingredients. The overall sweetness just doesn't work for this "hefeweizen".

Feels way too bubbly and not in a happy summertime way, more like a Bud light or soda carbonation way. And then there's the finish which is very very dry.

Overall: No.

Not worth your time. I'd love to love this beer since it's brewed pretty near me but... no.

12oz bottle received as an extra in a trade with jpmclaug. Thanks Jason! Poured into an Oak Creek Brewery wheat beer glass.

A - Pours a pale orangey golden color with a touch of yeasty haze throughout. A two finger cap of finely bubbled creamy foam sits on top with good staying power. Falls slowly to leave behind some sheets of foamy lacing on the glass.

S - Spicy and fruity aroma with cloves up front, cinnamon, bananas, oranges and lemons. Bready and yeasty base with some sugary sweetness to round things out.

T - A bit sweet up front and full of esters. Banana has a large and up front presence. Nice clovey kick side by side with the fruity yeastiness. Hops are mild but enough to offset the big malt base which is sugary and bread doughy.

M - Lighter body with a prickly but smooth carbonation of a medium-high intensity. Smooth, yeasty, spicy, malty.

O - Very good hefeweizen. Not gonna make you forget about all the great German examples but a worthy alternative.

12 oz bottle into a Weizen glass.

Pours a slightly hazed gold, with several billowy fingers of bright-white head. This dissipates down pretty readily, leaving behind a thin sudsy cap that leaves some light spotty lacing down the sides of the glass. The aroma is rather thick smelling in the nose with notes of banana, clove, and a tart bready twang from the wheat. While I wouldn’t expect to find a ton of hop activity here in the nose, this is just missing any kind of a floral feel or a general airiness to this that would give these flavors some more life.

The taste is unfortunately similar to the aroma, and is thick on the palate with fruity flavors of banana and orange that are set against that crisp twang from the wheat. Some light citric bitterness adds just a touch of extra crispness to this. The spiciness of the clove runs the whole way through the profile but mostly makes its presence known in a semi-dry finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a really mellow feel to the carbonation. This could definitely use a bit more effervescence on the palate for a Hefeweizen.

I’ve had this one on tap before and I remember it being a bit better than this bottled offerings. From the flavors to the feel, this one just felt like it was dragging at times, without a whole lot of a refreshing quality that I would normally look for in the style. This single 12 oz bottle was a chore to get through at times.

Pours a very light fizzy head that fades pretty quickly over very hazy golden orange color. Loses some points due to severe lack of head which should be big and bubbly on a hefe.

Nose brings some light wheat aromas, a bit of light malts, hints of citrus and clove but not much. A fruity ester aroma from the yeast that brings an herbal quality, and would normally be nice but a bit too much here, and a hint of green apple.

Taste is a bit better, a fruity flavor again, green apple, light citrus, hints of spices. A nice wheat character brings a nice light flavor. Not much else there, just wheats, fruits, hint of spices and hint of esters. Finishes a bit drier with a touch of lingering citrus.

Mouth is lighter bodied, decent carb but not nearly what it should have for the style.

Overall not very impressed. This is quite low for the style, but a decent overall drinking beer. It doesn't do much in any category and is lacking a lot. Drinkable at least, and a bit tasty but lighter than it should be.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy amber color. I expected the color to be lighter. There is just under a finger of off white head that goes away completely.

Smell: This is more like it. Fruit and spice notes. Belgian yeast and some banana along with malt.

Taste: Similar to the smell. Crisp with spice and fruit notes. Banana and some mild citrus. The finish has a very mild bitterness to it.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with aggressive carbonation and a finish that's a bit dry.

Overall: Much better than I thought it would be looking at it. Pleasant to drink, but I don't know that I'll come back to it.

My main man, tone77, came through like a champ at precisely the right time! He dropped off a massive box of BTs and a few CANs, among them this Hefeweizen. I have long eschewed the style for its banana split flavors, but in the face of this summer's heat and humidity, I am coming around.

From the bottle: "Brewed with a German yeast that tempts fate and your palate with illusory perceptions of exotic banana and spicy clove, this Hefeweizen will make you a believer long before it's [sic] crisp, refreshing finish. Open the bottle and prepare to ... defy superstition."; "Respect the Fluid".

I initially had a finger of bone-white head that simply wilted in this oppressive heat. Color was a very cloudy orangish-yellow. Nose was equal parts banana and clove, which is about as much as I prefer if it does not skew towards clove esters. Mouthfeel was medium and the banana esters were prevalent on the tongue. Finish started out banana and gave way to a nice clove spiciness on the extreme finish. A good beer for a hot night!

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a dark golden color with a smallish head, lots of carbonation. Smell is of banana, some grains and clove. Taste is of banana, clove, grains, good but not overpowering, a bit subdued. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

On tap at the Bel Air location.

The beer pours a light hazy, white gold color with minimal head and very little lacing. The nose is pretty wheaty, with no more than a touch of underlying clove and nutmeg. Given the unimpressive nose, I was a bit surprised by what I tasted. On the palate, along with the wheat flavor, I get considerable clove, nutmeg and almost a bubblegum flavor. Mouthfeel is quite light in this 4.8% beer, though it's not the least bit watery. The beer is very light and refreshing, with the alcohol dialed down very nicely. As a result, drinkability is exceptional.

One of the better offerings I encountered at the brewpub during my most recent visit.

Appeared a murky paleish swamp water color, fitting of the style. Taste was quite light and refreshing. Smell was fragrant of cloves. Taste was strong of pumpkin pie spices. The beer had a noticeable burn in the finish, that you wouldn't expect from something this low in alcohol but it does. I thought it accompanied the california club quite well (good eats, but thats a whole nother review)

Draught at DuClaw Bowie.

Pours a cloudy straw, but pale, thin white fluffy head.

Nose is banana and crisp wheat, nice and not as overwhelmingly banana-y as some American versions. Still, falls short of the German classics.

Taste is banana tangy yeast, crisp wheat, dry, very clean finish. Some clove pokes through on the finish, and really not bad at all. very solid and fairly authentic for an American brewed version, not the caricature that some become.

Mouthfeel is fluffy, light body, light but crisp carbonation, quite nice.

Appearance: hazy golden yellow in color with a short 1/4" head that falls apart within seconds. No lacing develops. No citrus wedge added to glass.

Smell: light banana and clove is all you can pick up.

Taste: typical banana, clove, and wheat tones are very mild. Some lemon zest is also in the background. This beer needs a kick on the flavor front. Not as refreshing as one would want.

Mouthfeel: crisp from start to finish. Light in body. Very short, almost clean aftertaste.

Drinkability: so-so at best. This beer is a bit boring and was hard to finish. There are better beers at DuClaw, so keep this low on the list of ones to try.

Presented with no head at all. Hazy, pale yellow color.

Some citrus fruit in the nose, a bit of clove, but everything seemed pretty faint.

A bit tart, with some fruit thrown in. A slight hint of banana. Not much clove, or much else for that matter. Seems weak.

Thin and a bit watery. Not enough carbonation to make it refreshing. This was pretty easy to drink, but I wouldn't get it again. The character is just not there.

13 Degrees pours a typical hefeweizen appearance with a cloudy yellow-gold body and bright white head. The reteniton is limited, however, and it drops rather quickly for the style (that may have just been a dirty glass, however, as I tasted it at one of their busier locations).

Lemon, banana, and clove dominate the nose with just a touch of wheaty malt slipping through. Nice!

In the mouth it's medium-bodied and crisp, but still dextrinous.

The flavor delivers clove-like spiciness over sweetish wheaty malt with notes of banana. It finishes drying as the sweet malt erodes to reveal a lingering, dull bitterness.

Overall, a decent rendition of the style and a great summer refresher!

Tasted at the Arundel Mills location. Beer is a pale hazy yellow with a thin white bright head that lingers for a while. Smell is faint banana and wheat. Taste is a very strong banana flavor with a clove and spicey finish. Lingering fruity bubblegum aftertaste. Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. This is a nice flavorful version of a hefeweizen---another solid seasonal from Duclaw.

Pours a darker yellow color, cloudy, nice head and lacing.
Smells fine. Just a hint of banana, maybe yeast, spices and a tiny hint of citrus.

Taste the banana, definately clove in there, more spices I cannot place exactly.
Refreshing and a little bit creamy.
I had this outdoors last weekend at a festival. Great beer for an outdoor setting.
I drank more than one and I am not a huge fan of the style.

Sampled Friday night at the new Fells Point DuClaw location.

Nicely unfiltered hefe served in a clear pint glass. Looks like a hazy summer morning sky, yellow and thick.

Fruity banana smells are followed by the standard hefe tastes, but didn’t get the clove flavors later on when the beer warmed up a bit.

More full flavored and more mouthfeel than I expected. I like having the hefes on warm days and wouldn’t mind having several of these. They started to get nice and sticky in my mouth after more than one. With the somewhat water view from the new DuClaw location and mild weather over the weekend, the atmosphere really worked well with the beer.

Tasted on 7/10/04 at the test drive of the brand new Fells Point location on Bond Street.

Appearance: Hazy amber, with a slight sticky lacy head. Fine delicate carbonation.

Smell: Subdued, lemon and bananas. Just a whiff of floral hops.

Taste: Banana and citrus up front, with a delicate hoppiness following. Just a touch of spice (clove, coriander) on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Nice medium bodied mouthfeel, smooth creamy carbonation.

Drinkability: I'll have another thanks!

Tasted at the 13 Degrees Release Party at the Arundel Mills Location on 6/30/04.

A very cloudy apricot color with a low head for the style... Very much a Bavarian Hefeweizen with loads of banana on the nose and in the mouth. The clove character is there but subdued in comparison to the fruitiness. Medium bodied, smooth and refreshing. Certainly easy to drink more than one.
