12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a lighter copper-brown color with four fingers of white head which slowly dissolved into a finger of foam that covered the entire top of the beer. Jesus, there’s a lot of head to this beer! Also, the color of the beer is a little surprising, as it’s much lighter than I was expecting, considering it’s called a dunkel. The beer looks more like a Belgian brune or abbey ale, rather than a dunkel lager.

Aroma: Very complex. Lots of malt, lots of spice, and lots of floral hops too. Nicely balanced, but very complex. Fresh bread, spices of clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin, all-spice, honey and clover. Very pleasing.

Taste: Again, the taste is much more like a Belgian ale than a Munich-style dunkel lager. Malty upfront, with tons of spice: clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin, all-spice and honey, all nicely balanced with some hoppy bitterness. Excellent beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium, with a ton of carbonation that doesn’t really tickle the taste buds, but rather slaps the crap out of them. With an ABV of 5.8%, there’s no alcohol presence on the palate.

Overall: Damn, this is a good beer. No, this is a great beer. I love how complex the flavor profile it is, how nicely balanced between malt, and spice and hops it is. I’m always going to have some of this on hand.

This latest rotating seasonal release from DuClaw is named for the day on which it was released. Halloween, October 31st. The description from the official release e-mail: "Celebrate Halloween with the latest brew straight from Jim Wagner's cauldron: 31, our new Spiced Munich Dunkel. This German-style amber lager tricks you with its smooth, malty taste and moderate 5.1% abv, then treats your palate with a spicy finish of cinnamon and nutmeg. 31 goes on tap October 31st and will be available for a limited time — while supplies last."

On draft at the Arundel Mills DuClaw location. Pours a light, clear amber (that seems almost too light for a Dunkel) with a smallish off white head that left minimal lacing. The aroma gives a tease of what's to come with a mixture that is predominantly spices and more subdued sweet maltiness.

Taste is sweet malt on the back of the throat to start but then melds into the spicy middle act with the "as advertised" cinnamon and nutmeg clearly standing out. The spiciness mixes with some lingering hop bitterness to create a pleasant, tingling finish on the tongue before slowly creeping away. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied but still crisp and refreshing and definitley helps increase the drinkability.

Much like last spring's limited seasonal, El Guapo, DuClaw has snuck this one in between monthly releases and has provided yet another enjoyable surprise of a beer that is both tasty and quaffable. Easy drinkablily and a satistying fall-like spice kick definitley make this Halloween release more treat than trick. Hopefully they will see fit to release this again sometime down the line.

12 oz. bottle poured into a SN curved pint (

A: Nice bit of cascade on a vigorous pour to make a thick 2 finger head with big bubbles, that eats itself rapidly. Amber, ruby brown body with a bit of lacing.
S: Immediately after popping the cap, it just smells like feet.
T: Spiced and odd mingling of flavors over all. Very different from the usual mix of fall seasonal beers.
M: Smooth with very little carbonation felt.
O: Not my kind of pumpkin beer. Just like nutmeg and cinnamon in a lager.

Served on-tap at the Fells Point location.

A: The Munich dunkel is a dark caramel brown color, one that emanates with a bit of glow. A half a finger of head goes nowhere.

S: The nose is bready, full of darker malts and just a hint of spicy sweetness.

T: I'm not sure why someone would want to take a perfectly good dunkel lager and spice it up all sweet like. Luckily the spice profile isn't as big as I was led to believe. Caramel malts lead the way, bready with a toasted finish. Cinnamon and nutmeg flavors are present but they are admirably restrained, adding just enough to the body to take notice.

M: A decent Munich lager. Luckily the spice profile isn't that bold.

D: One and done for me. I still don't see the need for spices...

A - Two plus fingers worth of ultra lush ultra creamy pale khaki colored head with a slightly rocky top... Solid retention gives way to a full lace and thick collar... The color is a mix of light brown and metallic bronze... A moderate bit of moderate to quick paced carbonation... This is a pretty good looking brew...

S - Cinnamon, nutmeg and assorted other holiday spices are at the forefront, but not overpowering... Next in line is a bunch of pale malts... Perhaps some dark fruits...

T - Nutmeg... Cinnamon... Assorted other holiday spices... Pale malts... Dark bread... Dark fruit... A hint of caramel... Perhaps a touch of nuttiness...

M - Medium bodied... Sleek... Light to moderate carbonation... Smooth... Slightly crisp... Even and consistent...

D - An interesting creation... Quite sessionable with good flavor and lots of character... I always enjoy what DuClaw has to offer in terms of creativity... A nice little beer that those into creative brewing should check out...

I have to admit. I saw the label at the store and bought some, but tried it on tap first at DuClaw in Arundel Mills. Now I'm glad I bought it. Deep mahogany to black in color, with subtle carbonation and virtually no head, though the foam at the edges laced the glass nicely all the way down. Subtle roasted malt (dunkel) in the nose and a very (emphasize very) smooth, moderate mouthfeel at initial taste. Flavor was fairly straightforward dunkel, not really sweet, but rich in flavor, with a nice bitterness at the end that was enhanced in a flavorful way by (I'm assuming) the cinnamon. Definitely not "in your face" spiced at all. Very balanced and flavorful. The spices, instead, enhance the flavors of the beer. Equally drinkable. Went down very quickly. Loved every second of it.

I had this on-tap at the brewpub. Served in a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear dark reddish amber with hardly any head.

Smell: Very malty, hints of cherry and caramel. The malt it a bit nutty and there is a strong spice presence.

Taste: Just like the smell, this one is very malty. Mild fruity notes, I'm picking up some cherry. Lots of spices, cinnamon with some caramel. Spices dominate the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tingly carbonation and a finish that is a bit slick.

Overall: I thought this beer was just alright. The spices made it interesting, but nothing too special. I don't think I'll search it out again.

Poured into a perfect pint.

3.5 A: Medium amber color. Two fingers of foamy beige head. Retention is very good, but almost no lacing is left.

4.0 S: Big spiciness in this. Tons of cinnamon and nutmeg and just slightly less allspice and clove. I don't know if it's just the spice combo or something inherent in the base beer, but it gives a spiced cider vibe. Some toastiness from the base, but the spiciness is powerfully potent and overshadows everything. I definitely like it this way though. I've never had a beer this aggressive with the spices, so I give DuClaw some credit for being ballzy.

4.0 T: The taste is about the same as the nose. Huge spiciness - cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice - and toasted maltiness. There's also a well received neutral malty sweetness. It's pretty damn simple, but it tastes great.

4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Good creaminess. I'd like this better if it were thicker, but it's good nonetheless.

4.0 D: Really enjoyed this. I've never had a beer so saturated with spices that also tasted quite good. Pick this up if you like spicy pumpkin beers.

A - Kind of hazy deep red/amber. Head is minimal and so is the lacing. Hazy with tiny floating bits of sediment.

S - Smells like a good dunkel, sweet with a mild dose of clove and cinnamon? Weird but it smells good.

T - I like it the cinnamon spice really compliments the dunkel flavors (toasted malts and some lager yeasts) Nothing that extreme but good.

M - light to medium on par for the style.

Overall nothing to seek out again but it was a good offering from these guys.
