A: Clear, gold, 1 finger white head.

S: Pine, calypso, fruity, grapefruit.

T: Over the top bitter. Herbal, astringent, piney, citrus, over sparged or hopped. BU/GU is out of whack.

M: Light to medium with a snappy crispness.

O: Smells waaay better than it tastes.

22 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours a clear copper, with 2 fingers of rich bright-white head. This has a nice finger’s worth of robust flare-up to it when swirled, which soaps the sides of the glass with foamy swathes of lacing. The aroma smells of fresh grass, a touch of pine, lemon zest, and some underlying earthy bitterness. A tight sweetness gives the nose some firmness across the back. Those hops are on good display here in the nose, combining with the malts to give this a fresh and earthy twang in the nostrils.

The taste has a fresh and zesty bitterness that cuts across the tongue, with a bright smack of lemon tartness and a crisp neutral sweetness that balances this nicely across the back. This finishes with a dry and bitter earthiness that lingers on the tongue. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a slick creaminess across the back that then gathers itself forward and prickles the tongue with flavor. Alcohol is well hid.

This turned out nice and is one of the better showcases for the Sorachi Ace hops that I’ve come across lately. That combo of pale malt and rice really make the backbone of this, with a combination of crisp and creamy to the mouthfeel that really gives this an easy drinking nature. This is probably my favorite of the Exile Series so far.

Imperial rice ale. But it also showcases Sorachi Ace too. In fact, the bottle plays up the Sorachi Ace more than the rice aspect. From the Wine Source

A: The IPA is an orange amber color, crystal clear, with a thin white head. A steady stream of bubbles quickly dissapates, never feeding the head.

S: The nose is malty, biscuit and light toast up front. The Sorachi Ace brings lemony citrus, noticeable but not overwhelming. The rice comes through in the lightness of the malts, biscuity and present but not intense.

T: The Sorachi is a smart addition, consistent with a Japan theme, with lemony citrus hoppiness. Oily but not biting, the hops manage to linger around in the finish. Light biscuit flavors and toast complement the mild hop profile. The rice adds to the body but not much flavor-wise. The hop, in the finish, have just enough citrus to stand out. Very easy drinking.

M: Smooth and mild, this IPA stresses the delicacy of the Sorachi Ace. It's no hop bomb but the flavors go very nicely together.

I had this on-tap at Duclaw. Poured into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Clear amber with a golden hue. There is a half finger of off white head that leaves a layer and some nice lacing.

Smell: Sweet malt, quite herbal with some lemon notes. Crisp.

Taste: Very herbal. Sweet and light from the malt. A bit fruity with hints of citrus and lemongrass. The hop profile is a bit herbal with some citrus peel and the finish is quite bitter.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, mild smooth carbonation, and a dry finish.

Overall: A pretty good beer. I love the herbal notes and the light citrus as well. The bitter finish crushes the other flavors, could have gone for a little more gentle hop profile.

22oz bottle received via Growling at the Moon. Thanks for the brew, Dan!

Poured into an imperial pint with a huge 4+"off-white head over the cloudy burnished golden brew. Head slowly returns to the liquid, but it's a long time before I can top off, with chunky lacing. Aroma is lightly spiced and soapy.

Taste starts with some citrus up front, spices in the middle, soapy and moderately bitter through the close. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth, and drinkability is okay as well. Kind of middle of the road on this one for me.

Appearance is crystal clear yellow with a two finger head. Lots of carbonation.
Aroma is fermented grapes and rice wine.
Flavor is rice wine and soap. There's also a lingering aftertaste of fermented rice.
Mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing, the beer itself is the opposite.
So many odd flavors that aren't balanced at all.
Very odd beer.

Enjoyed this bomber bottle out of a Belgian tulip glass.

A: Pours a clear orange hue with a huge, frothy, white head that slowly dissipates leaving a nice trail down the glass and ends in a solid persistent lace.

S: Aromas of malt, lemony citrus and hops.

T: Bitter tart flavor with a huge wallop of citrus and lemon followed by the hops and finished on the dry side of bitter.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Interesting brew. Nothing spectacular but definitely worth a try.

appearance: light yellowish orange in color with a 2" head that lingers a while. Nice lace develops.

Smell: big citrus and floral hop bitterness comes through to the nose.

Taste: caramel, some grapefruit, floral hops, lemon zest, and a late biting bitterness kicks in.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Lightly crisp from start to finish with some dryness late.

Overall: a very tasty IPA that has some refreshing qualities to it. Easy to drink.

On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours an amber copper color with fairly decent head retention and light lacing. Have to say right off that I'm not encouraged by the way this IPA looks. The nose is a bit worrisome as well, as I get considerable malt, some underlying dry citrus and tobacco, and maybe some light cherry. On the palate the beer is a bit better, as the hoppy bitterness in the finish counters the moderate sweet malt fairly well. I guess there's something of a wild rice flavor in the mid palate as well, and the finish is fairly dry. The alcohol is a bit more noticeable than I like to see, especially for an IPA with such a relatively low abv. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to light, with a fairly long, bitter finish.

Have drunk a fair amount of DuClaw beers, and frankly this quality level is pretty much what I've come to expect from them. Oh well...

Bomber into a matching DuClaw pint glass. The brew appears a perfectly clear light gold color with a finger of off-whtie head. As the cap fades, it leaves some patches of lace sticking to the glass. Rising bubbles of carbonation maintain a thin film across the top throughout the entire duration.

The aroma includes toasty grain straight out the gate. A little bit of buttery diacetyl is noted as well as a bit of mineral content that isn't quite but almost comes across as sulfur. There is a faint fruity undertone that goes back to a bit of the initial lemon hop aspect mixed with herbs.

The taste is bitter with almost a perfume-like character from a combination of herbal bitterness, lemon essence and alcohol. There is a bit of buttery character in this coupled with some mineral/metallic character towards the back. The taste residing inside of my mouth is like you were dared to put a handfull of pocket change in your mouth and hold it for as long as possible. The bitterness of this is both earthy and herbal with an aftertaste that goes back to almost artificial lemony-like perfume. Only after this brew goes beyond ideal temperature does this start to feel "natural" and not as bad as I made it out to be when it was sampled colder.

This is a medium bodied brew with a moderate to lighter level of carbonation that is soft on the tongue. At times, the sorachi hops showed themselves but there is a lot of other things going on in this brew that are distracting. I would not pay to have this again, it isn't that good of an ipa, let alone a showcase of a single hop variety.

On tap at DuClaw Arundel Mills Mall.

DuClaw advertised this as an Imperial Rice Pilsner at the bar. No mention of "IPA".

Poured deep golden, not amber, with a tight lace head that dropped quickly. Heavy essence of lime and grass on the aroma with sweet malt backbone. Whiffs of sake-like rice notes made their presence known.

BIG Sorachi Ace presence dominates the flavor profile. So much so that the hop oils coat the tongue heavier with every quaff. Halfway through the pint my palate was fatigued by the intense lime peel/citrus bitterness. Hop bitterness overtook the rice and malt and held their presence to a minimum.

This was my first experience with Sorachi Ace hops. I enjoyed the citrus profile it provided this beer, but in the end, it became over the top intense. This beer is out of balance and too hoppy to thoroughly enjoy. Less IBU's would improve its overall rating.

22oz. bottle courtesy of cdmillard. Served in an SA Perfect Pint. Pours a honey-gold hue with a translucent clarity and a frothy, 1.5 inch, bright white colored head. Head settles into a solid, rocky mass that leaves textured clumps on lacing on the walls of the glass as the beer recedes. Nose expresses citrus and a fermented rice character. Taste is a bit off on this beer - similar to nose with the addition of a metallic quality, a hint of dill and a soapy character. Finish is not great - somewhat acrid and bitter, and not in a good way. Mouthfeel is light-medium with a crisp, lively carbonation. Not sure if this beer is past its prime, or just not good, but it's pretty awful.
