Imperial Chocolate Rye Porter. First brewed in 2010, the first eXile experiment to escape from the lab, X.1: Imperial Chocolate Rye Porter, elevates the Robust Porter style to new heights. This 7.7% abv, full-bodied porter boasts a rich aroma of roasted malt and cocoa, and big chocolate and roasted malt flavors accented by underlying notes of rye and coffee. The addition of real chocolate to the beer during the brew process not only adds to the flavor profile, but also contributes to the velvety mouthfeel and crisp, bittersweet finish. Oh, did we forget the medals? X.1 is the 2012 Silver Medalist at both The World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival in the chocolate beer category. Now that’s a successful experiment!

Bottled 2012, tasted side-by-side with BBA version, poured into teku
A- pours jet black in color with a small creamy dark tan head that reduces to a ring around the edge, a bit of lace left behind
S- lots of smoky peat moss aroma up front with notes of campfire & dried smoked pork and beef jerky. Cocoa and milk chocolate malt with some notes of toffee, caramel and fig
T- smoky notes continue into the taste with notes of peat, campfire, dark chocolate, caramel and dark fruits. The finish is dry with notes of sherry and almost vinous
M- medium body with low carbonation, slightly oxidized, leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel and a foamy dry finish, alcohol is hidden well
O- this has aged quite well and has some good smoky notes. It makes me wonder how smoky it was originally. This was notably more smoky than the BBA version

Exile 1 pours black with a small tan lacing head. There is a roasted and slight chocolate aroma. The taste is dry, has a nice roasted flavor, and some chocolate notes; the chocolate is not overpowering. Good body nice flavors. Overall it s a nice full porter with some goo flavors.

Enjoyed in a snifter.
A - Very dark inky black colour with a thin layer of light brown head.
S - Sweet chocolate, molasses, roast and lighter spice and coffee aromas.
T - Sweet milk chocolate, molasses, roast and a light spiciness form the rye. Gets very sweet as I continue to drink it.
M - Medium, almost full body. Light carbonation.
