Bottle: Poured a black color ale with a quite large foamy dark brown head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of green bitter hops with light dry roasted malt notes. Taste is also dominated by dry bitter roasted malt with light green bitter hops notes. Body is quiet full with medium carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed with nice grassy/green hops notes but maybe a bit too much astringency in the aftertaste.

It has a deep amber, ruby brown color. On a standard pour I produced about a fingers worth of head. It was beige to mocha in color and lingered a bit.
The aroma has some roasted barley and fresh hops. The hops don't present any particular flavor but do smell fresh.
The flavor has a desent amount of roasted malts or barley up front. Sweet dark breads and malts can be tasted. Hops are lightly present and maybe have a pine flair, I don't know.
Drinks alittle sweet but also has some dry bitterness towards the end. I did note some very sutle metallic undertones but not really enough to be any kind of issueThe body seems alittle washed out and watery.
I'd like to try some of thier beers off the tap, I'm sure thier better then the bottling line they have going. This beer is fair and okay. There are better black ales out there.

Black, same tan foam as the single version. Smells like a more intense of the original obviously, with molasses, graham, some toast, a big dose of cocoa, some more licorice. Good nose, not in line with typical ABA, but it's nice. Flavor is nice and dark malty, with a solid soily good molasses and cocoa character. There is little to no hop character in here to me. Medium on full bodied with low carb and a wet finish. Good beer, just like the single version, not an ABA by my standards, but good.

A gift from my sister-in-law who lives in DC. Haven't heard of this brewery before but looking forward to trying this one out.

A thick, dark, oily pour produces two fingers of dark brown, bubbly head. Some lacing and retention, frothy. Looks good. Scents of grassy hops, burnt cherry, smoke, toasty malts. Interesting flavor. Starts off hoppy and earthy with hints of smoke and charred wood. I like the finish, bittersweet chocolate, lingering hop bitterness, and a nice boozy warmth. As expected, the mouthfeel is on the thicker, heavier side. Full bodied with some substance, I like that. Overall a tasty beer with solid flavor and mouthfeel. I look forward to trying more from this brewery.

pours a deep brown with a off white head. foam clings to the glass. decent aroma- raisins, lemond rind, some woodsy hops and faint anise. not particularily cohesive or enticing. taste is the samesome of the black malt comes through but the malt feels weak. the hops aren't too much better, they dont stand out and get swallowed up by some black malt astrigency in the finish. body is unpleasantly watery and under carbonated. i have yet to find many cascadian darks that work, and this one falls in that category. it feels like there was a compromise on everything. nothing stands out and ultimately it feels like this beer gave up too much to wedge itself into this style.

A- Dark brown body with amber highlights towards the bottom of the glass. Thick tan head with good lacing.

S- Roasted and chocolate malts come through a lot with a slight hop note hidden in.

T- The malts come through way more than the regular black lightning. Roasted malts and chocolate are very prominent with only a slight hop presence in the back.

M- Very smooth and creamy with a full-bodied mouthfeel.

O- Good beer, but it is not as balanced as the original. Tastes more like a hoppy porter than a black IPA.

Served in an oversized DFH snifter.

A: After a vigorous pour, I conjured up a whopping mocha-colored 2.5 finger head that stuck around for a good while. The liquid below it ranged from charcoal to pitch black.

S: It had a farily bright and almost fruity hop component that was inviting along with a dark malt presence that wasn't grainy in any way.

T: On the taste, I didn't get the hop profile that I was expecting. This was more of a hoppy, fruity porter than anything. I got a good bit of molasses and toasted marshmallow, along with a pretty bitter kick at the end.

M: This was just a touch too sweet for my palate, but that is a minor quibble. Overall, I dug the carbonation level, lacing, and level of stickiness.

O: I've long considered DuClaw to a really nice, consistent gem in the DC area. I'm happy to report that this beer continues them on that path. :)
