Just had this beer on-tap tonight at Duclaw.

It poured pitch black with a small tan head that quickly fizzled away.

The smell was predominantly bourbon with vanilla notes. There was some dark malts present and a slight boozy smell.

The taste was very solid with strong bourbon and vanilla notes along with rich dark malts. A slight citrus kick at the end helped balance the beer out.

The mouthfeel was thick but not too heavy. It was not cloying or overly carbonated. Very nice for a barrel aged beer.

A very good beer overallNot super-drinkable, but a great beer for a cool fall or winter night

22oz bottle from BigTomZ that was included in a trade for some Bruery bottles. This was an excellent surprise.

It's mohahony on the edges and in the bulb but deep molasses in the core. Very thin tan head that is quickly gone, some thin lacing.

Strong on the bourbon barrel with distinct bourbon and vanilla extract notes. A bit of malt in the nose, but largly boozy, though not a mess.

Much more balanced in the taste, solid roasted malts, a bite with the oak and bourbon notes with a crisper finish than I was expecting. A bit of citrus at the end.

Thicker than what I think of for a 'black ale' but certainly not heavy. No cloying and the citrus at the end leaves a clean palate with just a trace of bourbon.

Better than the sum of it's parts. A very nice surprise but I'm not sure this would be the same beer with age on it as one of the redeeming characteristics is the balance that the brewers struck here.

22 oz bottle picked up from Shawan for 6.99, served in a snifter.

Deep burgundy-brown color with a fizzy cream color head; no lacing, decent retention. Aroma is extremely barrel forward, bourbon and vanilla with light dark fruit. Very little malt or hop presence. Flavor has a stronger roast malt presence, but little hops, bitterness or depth to the malt. Barrel again dominates, without being overly boozy or hot. Vanilla and dark fruit sweetness linger through the finish. Medium light body with a pleasantly sweet finish. Tastes more like an indeterminate, weak bodied bourbon aged "dark" ale, than a bourbon aged black ipa. Forgettable, but as a whole better than expected. DuClaw's endeavors into making "weird" (for Baltimore area) stuff like this have been promising so far.

Very interesting nose on this one, I actually get a sassafras note on this one, kind of like cola. Other than that I get a few tropical notes on this one backed by a bit of light roast.

Black to the naked eye and dark ruby where the light burns through. The head was a light tan but fell into the beer quite fast. Lacing is nice.

There is a nice light roast (like the smell) that starts from sip through finish. Mid-palate is dominated by sweet tropical tones brought on by those American hops mentioned on the label. The finish brings this roast back with some bitterness to finish it off. Lingering flavors of vanilla and oak resinate in the aftertaste.

The body on this beer is surprisingly light, though, I would call it medium-light. Higher carbonation helps cleanse the palate to bring about a dry finish. Over all, this beer is wonderfully made, and a nice treat.
