22 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a gorgeous, clear copper/amber with a finger of white head that quickly dissolved into a thick halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Actually not much in the aroma, either that or I’m congested. I get some malt, maybe some caramel, and some alcohol, but not much else

Taste: Wow! What’s lacking in aroma is more than made up for in the taste! It’s very boozy up front, which makes sense, being a barley wine aged in bourbon barrels, but once the alcohol fades, I get malty notes of bread and cereal, followed by some sweet notes of vanilla, caramel. The beer finishes with some more alcohol and slight hints of earthy bourbon. Outstanding!!

Mouthfeel: Very chewy, with some very little carbonation. With an ABV of 10.6%, there’s quite a pronounced and enjoyable level of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is an excellent barley wine!! I really like the pronounced malty presence, mixed with the boozy alcohol. I just wish it had more of an aroma. Regardless, I’m definitely getting some more of this!!

A: Crystal clear pour that is orange brown in color. About a finger of white head builds up but fizzes away quickly. Basically nothing is left after a minute or so. 4

S: The bourbon is huge, but there's also a tropical juiciness underneath. The booze is in your face, but balanced somewhat by a caramel sweetness. 4

T: It's much like an IPA, which is amazing considering this was aged in bourbon barrels. It's tropical and hoppy, but doesn't skimp on the alcohol. The bourbon plays a role with caramel sweetness and some vanilla. The finish is all about the barrel. 4

MF: The body is light and carbonated well. The alcohol and sweetness does hit the drinkability a bit, but it is delicious. 3.5

O: This was an interesting beer and it turned out to be much hoppier than I expected. The sweetness and alcohol got to me by the end of the first glass. I would recommend it to anyone who likes tropical IPAs and bourbon. 3.5

a: This was a clear, dark amber color. It poured with a large, long lasting fizzy cap.

s: Sugary candy, vanilla, wood, booze and leafy hops all pretty well incorporated.

t: Sweet up front, caramelized sugar, faint fruit and boozy vanilla. This all blends surprisingly well with the still strong grassy hop bite. There is a slightly too strong lingering boozy bitterness.

m: Silky overalll, but maybe a little over carbonated.

o: I really liked this one but I wonder if some time in the cellar could have made it even better.

On tap at Max's the other day.

The beer pours the expect amber color with fairly good head retention and lacing. The nose is impressive, as I pick up butterscotch, brown sugar, vanilla and bourbon. The flavor profile replicates the nose, but I appreciate how smooth and (relatively) light on it's feet this beer is. Its really not heavy at all, and despite the booze and sweetness, drinkability was pretty good. Mouthfeel is was fairly full and soft, and the finish was long and smooth.

Very nice effort from the folks at DuClaw.

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

This is a really hot and bitter beer, especially in the finish. There are some nice flavors that show up. The caramel and bourbon notes are good, but the burn from the alcohol and hop bitterness crush everything by the end of the sip. Maybe I would enjoy this one more with some time. There is a nice fruity note in the nose that gets lost in the taste. Slightly over carbonated.

Bomber into a medium-sized Duvel tulip. Major thanks go out to Chris for sharing this ultra-rare bit of barrel-aged nectar.

A: Clear ruby-orange body with a solid, thin cap of frothy tan head. Poor retention and lacing, but overall pretty solid for the style.

S: Vanilla, coconut, bourbon, oak, and faint dark fruit. A bit of malt in the background. Solid, but unremarkable.

T: Coconut up front, with grape and toffee close behind. Butterscotch and bourbon on the long, boozy finish. Good, not quite great.

M: Full body, creamy carbonation. Terrific.

O: I really expected more out of this one, and even though it was thoroughly tasty it was a bit of a disappointment. I just couldn't taste the rare, try as I might. It's well worth drinking, but I would go out of my way to trade for it.

Cheers!

Bottle shared by yourefragile. Served in a SAVOR wine glass.

Pours a moderate rusty brown color with a thin off-white head and a bit of a cap on the way down. The nose carries a bit of bourbon plus some sweet malt in the background. Light caramel and a bit of booze. The flavor integrates the barrel character more, creating a beer that's nice and smooth. Medium body with a slightly-boozy finish. Pretty good.

22 oz bottle. 2012 release. Shared with everyone. Served in a HotD tulip.

Pours a clear mahogany with a thin cream head that fades to a thin collar and light lacing. Aroma is heavy of vanilla, toffee, bourbon with caramel malt and resiny pine hops. Light-medium body with soft carbonation and a dry, sticky finish. Sweet flavor, but pleasant balance of barrel and barley wine. Barrel dominates and veers to being a little too hot, but this is a week old bottle. Chewy, caramel malt body pokes through the wave of booze and blends nicely with the vanilla and caramel of the barrel. Impressive DuClaw, I'll be paying attention...
