12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

The beer pours an opaque dark brown, nearly black in color with about a finger of off white head that has moderate retention but yields no lacing. The aroma is incredibly peanut butter heavy, unlike anything I've ever encountered. Salty peanuts with just a bit of dark bitter chocolate behind it and a touch of dark grain. The flavors fall a bit short of the magnificent nose, bitter dark chocolate, that is a bit weak with some smooth grain and lingering salty peanut flavor, but it doesn't even come close to matching the nose. The body is a bit thin and highly carbonated, but coats the mouth well and has a nice creamy finish with just a bit of carbonated zip.

Verdict: Quite an interesting beer and certainly the best use of peanut butter or peanuts I've ever come across. The nose is really amazing but the rest of the beer falls a bit flat in comparison. Still, a solid choice for a dessert beer.

12 oz bottle

A) Pours with a thin, off white head that quickly settles. Opaque body. Nearly no lacing on the drink down.
S) Roasty malt aromas. Nutty - not quite peanut butter, but nutty.
T) Bold malts. Chocolate and peanut notes. Very rich.
M) Full body. Slightly gritty. Dry finish.
O) A creative porter. Not really peanut butter, but a valiant effort.

A: The beer is close to being jet black in color—only traces of dark are visible near the edges of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down, leaving wispy lacing on the surface and a thick collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of chocolate and peanut butter are present in the nose.
T: The taste is somewhat similar to a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup in that there is a bit of chocolaty flavors but is mostly dominated by peanut butter once you really 'bite' into it. The peanut butter flavors linger into the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer feels heavier in body compared to other porters and seems to be more like a stout. It has a hood balance between the chocolate and peanut butter flavors and makes for a good dessert beer.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a deep-deep brown color with a one finger of tan colored head. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell mixed with a whole lot of a milk chocolate aroma. Other sweeter smells of caramel and a rather potent showing of a roasted peanut butter smell also are in the aroma. A bit of coffee is there as well, producing an overall aroma of a somewhat drier peanut butter cup nature.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweet milk chocolate taste with a moderate roasted malt and light coffee flavor. While little peanut butter taste is present upfront, it begins coming in soon after the initial flavors hit the tongue. All while this occurs, the sweeter flavors seem to get even sweeter with more milk chocolate and caramel coming to the tongue and with some of the coffee flavors dwindling. A little bit of a roasted bitter flavor joins the flavor at the very end of the taste leaving a nice and sweet chocolaty and moderately peanut buttery flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – For a porter of 6.5 % abv. this one is a little on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is a bit on the higher side. For the sweeter milk chocolate and peanut butter flavors, a bit of a thicker body may have created a slightly better and more dessert like feel, but even said the higher carbonation was actually quite nice for the sweet flavors and made for a more easy drinkability in the beer. So with that the feel was fairly nice overall.

Overall – A nice sweet chocolate peanut butter cup brew with a good drinkability and abv. If the body was only a little bit thicker this would be spot on for a dessert brew. Even so this is really a quite nice brew overall.

From what I have sampled, DuClaw seems to be a gimmicky brewery, and this is the king of their gimmicky beers. The insane amount of peanut butter just blatantly jumps the shark. What you can taste about the porter isn't really all that bad, like the pleasant chocolaty malts ... but it's hard to detect anything beyond the obnoxious peanut butter. I do like brewers trying new things and being experimental, and I know several people that love this beer. But for me, this was not enjoyable and I will never be having this one again.
