A: Dark, warm brown with a reddish tint. No head.

S: Mostly vanilla and chocolate; not much bourbon or booze.

T: I was worried that I had waited too long to open this, but the initial taste is a delightful wave of chocolate that is not in the original. Mid-sip the flavors shift to a rich vanilla. Towards the end, some booziness can be detected, as well as bourbon and more bitter chocolate. The aftertaste is the same as the end of the sip, and lingers for awhile, though it isn't too strong.

M: Fairly thick and creamy, though not in a way that particularly fatigues the palate.

O: Deeeelicious. Reminds me of BCBS in some ways. I like the regular Retribution, and think that this is even better. Not quite worth the large price tag increase, but definitely worth splurging for at least once.

First had: growler shared at Voodoo, Meadville

Thanks to whoever brought this. Dark black pour with little to no head, some oily streaking on the glass. Lots of vanilla in the nose, overpowering yet enticing, secondary aromas of chocolate and roasty malts, almost no bourbon detected. Flavor was pretty big, lots of vanilla and a huge amount of sweetness...too sweet for me actually, like vanilla icing. When that died down a tiny bit, some milk chocolate came out in a small way, and a touch of bourbon. Body was on the heavier side of medium, carbonation was lower than average. Honestly I thought this beer was a mess. It was good, but the vanilla and the sweetness dominated all and left little room for complexity. It would be interesting to see how it does with a little age...let the vanilla mellow out and the bourbon come more to the foreground.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter.

The beer pours thick and black as night with absolutely no head. The smell is quite sweet just like the base beer. I am getting loads of chocolate and vanilla along with bourbon and sweet roast. There is also a mild dark fruit note. The taste is sweet, but not quite as sweet as I expected. I'm getting vanilla and chocolate along with the bourbon. This beer is a bit hot, some time might do it well. I'm getting oaky, peppery bourbon in the finish. The body is on the thick side with mild, tingly carbonation and a very dry finish.

Overall, I enjoyed this version. The sweetness didn't dominate the other flavors. I'd have more.
