Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: kernel on 08-22-2009

Pre-Prohibition style salutes a time when lagers had greater character and more distinct flavor, when beer wasn't full of the additives found in many of today's mainstream lagers. Lucky Bucket's version has a light, malty flavor that's easy on the palate. Filtered twice, the subtle maltiness nicely balances a floral hop. Dry-hopped with a fresh blend of aromatic West Coast hops, Lucky Bucket Lager is a great session beer with an ABV of 4.5% and 20 IBU's.

We pop a bottle, pouring into our shiny new Boulevard Nutcracker pint glass. It offers a crystal clear golden brown coloring, with a quick half finger head of crispy tan bubbles. This is more of a film than a head, but leaves spotted lacing once the beer begins to descend. No haze or sediment is found whatsoever, and carbonation appears to be light and deliberate. The aroma speaks highly of chemical-rich lemon cleaner, heavy adjuncty grain of white flour and brown rice, marshmallow sugars, ice, gingerbread warmth, fried egg metallics, Styrofoam, oily breadiness, apricots and fermented strawberries, burnt caramel malts, nickel metallics, and raw sunflower seeds and peanuts. The taste shows a bit more candor with flowing pale, crystal, and metallic adjuncty malts, bitter floral and grassy hops, bitter diacetyls and acetylaldehyde twinge, baked corn husk, raw plastics, white wax, apple sauce sugars, toasty caramel sugars, lemon zest, and uncooked pasta starchiness. The body is lightly medium but bready, and the carbonation is high and tight. The mouth is mildly coated, but quickly fades to a clean, tannic dryness. Otherwise, the mucosa feels cool and cleaned. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks back easily.

Overall, this is a fresh brewery for us. They certainly advertise this brewing company across Omaha locally enough, but we are kinda happy we got a sampling chance on this visit. We had just finished “pint night” actually at a local beer bar, and were coming back to the hotel to finish out our night in the room. In passing the snack area of the hotel lobby we came across a beer cooler, and obviously happily selected any local beverages that required rating, including this one. This, as we expected from the description, was a simple lager. It had a nice drinking face to it, but the flavor just wasn’t there in full force. To retract, the flavor and nose were there in simplicity, but didn’t make you want to drink many more of these. Perhaps if you’re going after a non-exclusively craft audience then it’s okay, but you’re not going to sway any IPA or stout seekers with this one. The job is done, and one can move on from there.

Pre-Prohibition lager pours a golden color with a dissipating head. There wasn't any aroma from this beer. The taste had crisp malt undertones, with a strong overly sweet fruity, almost apple like taste. Hard to drink, and way to sweet. Overall its a very sweet and fruity like lager.

I got this as part of a BOTMC. I poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a SA perfect pint glass. The pour is pale yellow with a moderate white head. The aroma is non descript, hay, grass, sweet. Taste like a typicla lager, light and easy drinking. A decent all around lager.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a clear medium copper with a one finger white head. Fairly good head retention and lacing with the head hanging around for awhile.

Aroma of cooked vegetables and some corn. There is really a lot of DMS here and I'm not sure if it is intended or not. Some caramel and grassy hops are buried in the background.

The flavor thankfully has less in the way of DMS but does bring along an odd, sour tartness that really detracts from the flavor. Some toffee and bready malt along with hay in the background but again I feel like there are too many off-flavors up front. Pretty watery mouthfeel but that is not out of line with a beer that is only 4.5%

Overall, I'm not really impressed. If this was cleaned up a little it could really shine.

12 oz into a pint

A - Pours a very clear, light brown color. Little bubbling, appears lightly carbonated. Head formation is light, just a film of light white.

S - A light scent of grainy notes, lightly malty. Some caramel and toffee is present, lightly toasted.

T - Light malty note, 2-row light sweetness with some grainy caramel notes. Little hopping - little bitterness. Finishes with some caramel malt notes.

M - Lightly carbonated, little sting on the tongue. Finishes very clean, smooth. Clinging sweetness on the tongue.

D - Easy drinking. ABV is well within sessionability. Lightly filling at times. Malting is pretty assertive, leaving a sweet finish.
