From a nice trade with Herr Burgess, I get the opportunity to sample an out-of-towner.

22 ouncer Bottled on 12/30/11.

A -- Clear, orange-copper with a dense, long-lasting, off white head.

S -- Sweet, rich, bready malt with a mild nuttiness back.

T -- This is an interesting beer because it starts with a mellow spicy bitterness then folds into sweet, bready to nutty malts and then comes around again to the bitterness in the finish. In-between the breadiness and the bitter finish is a mild caramel, even vague fruitiness that is very appetizing.

M -- Mouthfeel is smooth to crisp with a medium body.

O -- Overall, this is a terrific drinking beer. The balance between maltiness and bitterness is quite good without a clash of flavors as can often happen in an American Brown Ale, and the cleanliness of lagering a top-fermented beer smooths out the character nicely. A great rendition of the style.

On tap at The Liberty, Charlotte, NC, October 2011:

The beer appeared a very nice, bright, clear copper color that produced a nice, foamy, off-white 2 to 3 finger head that was well retained and that left some nice lacing.

The beer gave off a very nice sweet, toasted malted barley, bready aroma with a hint of a nut.

The taste of the beer was very good and followed the nose very well, bready and grainy sweetness. The finish was clean and crisp.

The beer had a lighter body to it and the beer was extremely drinkable, very smooth and a well-balanced beer. From what I can tell this is what a German alt is supposed to taste like. Overall, this is a very good beer and one that I wish that I could get in Atlanta, as if I could; it would be a staple at my house.

On tap in the Olde Mecklenburg tap room

Pours an orange/copper color with lots of nearly red highlights. About three fingers worth of off white/tan head that with good retention. Not much lacing.

Aroma is dominated by sweet caramel malts. A slight earthy smell is lingering in the background. As the beer warms you can start to catch hints of a very subdued hoppy aroma.

Very clean and crisp, sweet, malty flavors are most dominant. A slight hint of hops becomes noticable as the beer warms. Nicely carbinated. All in all this is a good beer, and coming in under 5% makes it very sessionable. The only complaint that I have is that, while it is very good, it seems as though there should be a little more to it.

A very enjoyable Alt. Good stuff

Had this beer in a growler years ago and then more recently on draft. Agree with the over reviewers that this beer is an underutilized and underappreciated style, German Altbier. It was one of their first beers and definitely a winner. Very clear and an excellent example.

Had my first try while on a business trip to North Carolina, and was very pleased. It has a smooth flavor that goes wonderfully with a nice Rib Eye. I enjoyed the fact that the after taste on the beer was as good as the taste when the beer hit your mouth. Comparison for me would be Boont Amber Ale or Moose Drool.

22 ounce bomber -> Samuel Adams Perfect Pint Glass

A - Stunningly beautiful. Lucious copper appearance with nice beige head, world class, retention, world class lacing.

S - The nose is kind of weak. I mostly got the smell of grasses.

T - a little smoky, a little rye, kind of a wonderful under control bitter grassy finish.

M - very pleasing with good carbonation.

O - I figured I would like this, but I had no idea I'd like it as much as I did. Awesome stuff.

Served from the bottle into a nonic glass.

A- Poured a very dark reddish brown color with tons of visible carbonation and off-white soapy head that left no lace.

S- Lots of nutty, bready, and grape must notes.

T- Big grape must and fruity notes, nutty, caramel malt, and grainy notes.

M- Prickly carbonation, dry, medium body, and smooth.

O- This is definitely one of the best altbiers I have ever had. It is full of such bright fruity notes and a nice malt backbone with super high drinkability.

Poured a bright amber with two-finger head. Subtle smell of spicy hops and malt.

Smooth, clean malt flavor profile. Prickly carbonation that lifts the toasty and tasty malt flavors. Bready. This is decidedly good fresh and really hits the mark. Extremely easy to drink and the mouthfeel is perfect for style and session.

Very nice altbier interpretation. Glorious with pretzels and mustard.

Trying the Olde Mecklenburg while on layover at Charlotte, NC airport at the restaurant Taste of Carolina. The beer poured a rich clear copper/amber with thin white head that is lacing. The smell includes caramel malt. The taste is a well balance beer between caramel malt and hops which help to clear the pallate after the drink. The mouthfeel is a nice medium body beer with good carbonation. Overall this is a great session beer and wish I could drink more.

A - Well, it's copper, clear, with a white head that has decent retention and lacing.

S/T - Fresh baked biscuit, toasted grains, a little nutty, and finishes with an ever so slight noble hop presence.

M - Medium body, crisp, clean, very smooth.

O - Easy drinking with a nice depth of flavor.
