Appearance-Red to copper with an off white to white foam out of the bottle

Smell-Wheaty yeast and red fruit.

Taste-Subtle on the whiskey from the barrel aging, stronger with the yellow yeasty flavors and strawberries and raspberries on the front.

Mouthfeel-Good finish, not overly heavy.

Overall-Not bad. Nothing terribly special. Mouthfeel is my favorite part. I would've like more of the barrel notes to come through.

Bottle poured at Tipples Rare and Barrel Aged Beer Tasting on July 13, 2014. Pours amber colored with a small white head on top. Not much to the aroma here, some light fruity malts and no sign of barrel treatment. Flavor follows with light fruity malts, stale hops, and very little of anything from the barrel. Maaaybe a hint of vanilla on the finish. Body is smooth, medium lowish carbonation, and medium mouthfeel. Overall there was nothing wrong with this and I'd drink it again if someone popped a bottle, but hardly any influence from a barrel. Slightly malty, very light flavored amber ale. Unexciting but decent.

On tap at Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Pours a murky copper with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, wood, and slight bourbon aromas. Taste is much the same with malt, caramel, vanilla, bourbon, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a bourbon presence that is more noticeable in the taste to me.

We crack a bomber, pouring into our Great Lakes pint glasses. It shows a ruddy amber coloring, holding a sparkling tan colored head for surprisingly long. The nose is rather unremarkable, with typical amber and brown malts, heavy metals, vanilla bean, Graham cracker sweetness, and very little Wild Turkey or heat of booze. The flavor doesn’t really do much more until the end and after, where toffee, honey, hollow bourbon, syrupy cloying vanilla flavoring, and brown and chocolate maltiness, cut through the heavy rice, adjuncts, white flour, and coiny metallics. The feel is on the watery side, and the carbonation is on the flatter, duller side. The mouth is lightly dried with tannic astringency, but is otherwise left cool and calm. The abv is easy, especially for a barrel beer, and it drinks back easily.

Overall, this isn’t a terrible beer, but perhaps their base amber just doesn’t hold enough grit and substance to it to hold up to the robust barreling process. We consumed this while watching the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes where California Chrome missed the Triple Crown, so hopefully that disappointment didn’t tarnish our view of this beer too much, but we felt a little let down here, too. The Wild Turkey barrels just didn’t do much to spruce up the base. They came to play a bit more towards the end, but do add a subtle warmth, diacetyls, and vanilla coolness to an otherwise bland flavoring. We didn’t expect Boont Barl to blow us out of the water, but it just doesn’t add up to the quality, strength, and cleanliness of barreling in many of its competing breweries.
