A- Pours a deep black, letting only a little light in around the edges. Two finger head has fantastic retention, and leaves abundant lacing behind.

S- a bit of raw grain, backed by toasted malts, and old french pressed coffee.

F- Great mix of chocolate and coffee flavors, with the coffee begin slightly more predominant. Slightly bitter finish, with only a hint of hops, most of the bitterness comes from roasted grain astringency. Nice flavor, but a bit weak and one sided.

M- medium bodied, perfectly carbonated.

D- Quite nice, the bomber can disappear quite fast.

Overall, pretty good, and worth the price. I don't think I'd seek it out at all, but its worth trying.

My next keg, good but not awe inspiring. I'm still comparing everything to Edmund Fitzgerald and they are losing. This is clearly a good beer, dark and complex and coffee and intrigue, but I'm left wanting and it is hard to describe why. Slighly shallow.

Appearance: Pours an almost pitch black color with a massive head that indicates problems to come, I fear; good retention, however

Smell: Chocolate, with coffee undertones

Taste: Brown bread and chocolate, with sweetened coffee undertones from start to finish

Mouthfeel: The beer has a watery character, with a lot of fizziness, particularly up front

Overall: Not sure how fresh this bottle is, though I bought it in the late Fall; the beer is not listed on their website, so it may well be retired; not up to the usual standards I expect from this brewery

22 oz. bomber.

A - Pours black with dark brown edges. Dense tan head forms a thick film and leaves descent lacing behind.

S - Roasted marshmallows, coffee, milk chocolate, woody, toasted nuts, molasses, dark fruit, sour dough bread.

T - Sweet roasted malt with dry cocoa underneath. The malt has more of an earthy grain to it than the aroma. Once warmed some dark fruit and sour dough emerges. Finishes dry with and earthy bite at the end.

M - Medium body starts out good but turns thin on the finish.

It packs in alot of flavor for 5.50 ABV. A nice porter with some character.

A deep brown colored beer which pours with very little head, but what foaminess is there is nicely structured. Some spotty lacing. Aroma has a butterscotch upfront smell with some roasted malts and coffee. On the paleete the taste is weak and washed out. There are hints of roasted malts but really are quite light. Mouthfeel as stated is thin and watery. This beer needs alittle help, whether its a bad bottle I don't know. A metallic taste slso dominates this beer both in nose and pallette. I'll mark to try at a latter date.

A: Dark chocolate with dark coppery highlights glisten from the light upon the pour. Midnight black appearance in the glass with a khaki colored spongey cake head that was moderate in retention and good on the lace forming concentric circles down the glass.

S: Dark rich chocolate with a smooth creamer enriched coffee presence. Dark fruit of plums is accompanied by a finish of medium chocolate roast.

T: Substance seems a bit thin upfront bodywise, but packs quite a dark and roasty punch. Dark fruit of juicy plums, raisins and a roasty bitterness. Sweet chocolate alcohol remains after the swallow.

M: The body feels a bit fuller then the initial sip. Medium bodied, dark and roasty on the tongue with a good sense of carbonation. Oily feel with a bittering of licorice and chocolate on the fade.

D: Consumed at 50F provides a roasty experience, though felt a bit thin depth wise. Decent drinkability though nothing that really that would make me consider seconds.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #39 (Apr 2010):

A well-noted move guys--we need more dark spring seasonals. An obvious malt bomb gently wielding only 17 IBUs.

Porter darkness woos us for the first sip, and the head is not shy at all in rising to the task at hand and then sticking around for a while. Sweet cocoa roastiness, hints of cake batter and faint blackberries in the nose. Smooth, with a fluffy crispness that makes you want to take another sip right away; very desirable mouthfeel. Malty, slightly roasty with a mild chocolate flavor, but as the sweetness kicks in, a quick splash of fruitiness jumps in too. Mild hoppiness blends in with the roasted grain to the help keep this beer on an even keel. Finishes mild and roasty, with slowing, drying graininess. A bit of charcoal and spent coffee show a last ditch blast of complexity.

Stands taller that it actually is, so the high level of drinkability comes at somewhat of a surprise--and a good one at that.
