You sometimes take a gamble when buying beers without access to the internet. So a 2 year old double IPA...I was getting excited but I guess I'll just see what's left to talk of.
Pours a lovely dark orange color with a thick creamy head that has pretty good retention. Leaves lovingly lacing all up and down the glass. It seems thing here has aged poorly.
Citrus hops and thick heavy caramel malt. The malt dominates this one without a doubt. It had a somewhat bready amber aroma that their amber has in it as well.
The hops try here, they really do. They build up on the tongue but they just don't have enough left to bite. The beer then finishes with a rather nice malty finish. Believe it or not this is pretty darn good. At 8.7 it hasn't taken on that barely wine like flavor...it's a strong pale ale and darn if it's not a pretty good effort. I've had a lot of double IPA's that were complete failures, this one shines on.
The mouth is somewhat thick but hardly too thick, Just enough carbonation (given the alcohol and age) to make for something you can easily drink.
At 5 bucks for this bomber it's a touch expensive when Sierra Harvest Ales can be had for 4, but if you're looking for something a touch different and there are still bottles on the shelves, give this a try.
Scores take into consideration that this is called a double IPA, but it would be wrong to take off too much given the age. Remember C is an average beer, not a bad one!

Pours a golden yellow color with a two finger foamy white head.
Aroma is bready, malty, caramel, toffee.
Flavor is much milder than the aroma. Malty but you get a good hop bitterness with a lingering flavor is apple and citrus.
You can't taste the alcohol but you can tell its a heavy hitter beer.
