Pours orange amber. 2 finger cream color head.
Aromas of grainand caramel, some citrus,a bit of a surprise after a run of IPA's that are heavy on the citrus hop side.
Flavors are in line with the nose. This does lead in with the caramel,an indirect yeast influence,a "beer" taste with the hop side smoothly coming in a moment later, some of both citrus and pine. The finish isn't long and lingering but ios nicely refined. The folks at Anderson have bottled this for I'm sure, over 20 years now and since then the typical IPA has become more hopped up,less balanced. I've not had this beer in quite a long time and evidently forgot how finely crafted it is. In current terms it seems almost more a APA or a hoppy mber but since it's been around longer than most,I can't fuss over definitions. Born in the region where the countries best wines live, this, typical of this brewery,is looking for a mellow and flawless refinement, not a snappy zap of In Your Face.
That subtle grace is very nice.
Mouthfeel is where this really is notable as it brings a good backbone and feel. The aftertaste is very good, rather complex, yet not very extended. From a broad pint glass,I felt I'd like a tad more fizz, but having a swig from the bottle-it was perfect. I've found a few beers that may spend energy in making a head in a broader glass, only to seem just a shade under carbo, but, from the bottle are just right. My bad for a too aggressive pouring.
Drinkably very good that lovely caramel lead in is just special, then the hops ease in and do a well rounded "hops" that's not TOO grapefruity. A refreshing, interesting brew, with grace and balance if you care to look for it.
