A classic NW beer from California- Tastes like something from Oregon.
Cascade hops and great aroma before you even taste it.
Nice bitterness, good balance of malt and hops. The alcohol rounds out the flavor nicely. Great label.

Was not impressed with the appearance, looked like a cup of tea. Strong hoppy aroma, and taste to match. The carmel malt flavor is overpowered by the bitterness. Not exactly complex nor is it hop flavored water. If your not a fan of hoppy beers stay away, this one will leave you burping hops for hours.

A damn fine beer. A hop lovers delight. Not as hoppy IMO as Victory's Hop Devil or Bell's Two-Hearted, but still hoppy enough to satisfy IPA fans. Pours out to a copperish color with the smell of floral notes and hops. Light grapefruit taste with a rather pine-like spice on the finish. An excellent beer.

Light copper bodied, with a pillowy bone-colored head. Fades to a thick skimming, but never leaves.
Earty raw hops on the nose. Need some hairs removed? Here you go. More metalic than James Hetfield. Pungent is an understatement. Carmel malt backdrop is solid, but seems pale in comparison.
Taste begins with slight toasted wheat bread notes. This rushes into a toasted carmel sweetness. Hops don't waste anytime arriving, and they are clearly in charge here. Puckering, floral buds, herbs, alum, and citrus. It really runs the gamut of hop flavors.
Slightly off balance, but a good hop study.
Medium-thick in the mouth, but stays very drinkable with steady carbonation throughout.

Picture perfect. Looks like it came right out of the tank.
The story of this beer is how it smells. Imagine falling back into a dumptruck full of freshly harvested hops. Someone nearby is sucking on lemon candy. It is a completely transporting experience, the smell of this beer. Beautiful, silky, pure texture supports subtle, poised, clean maltiness and provides room for bitter hop resins to dominate. Notes of espresso and heath bar emerge later. Elegant American IPA (that may seem like an oxymoron, but there you have it). Drink vast quantities of this.

WOW!!!! Outstanding IPA. This is as close to perfection as a beer can get. Great head, awsome glass lace. Hardcore hop flavor. Deep rich amber color that just invites you to suck the life out of it. This beer is a grandslam home run.

Clear copper color, nice 1/2 inch head that holds some hills and valleys. Citrusy aroma. Definite hop bite that magnifies at the back and in the swallow. Very "American" grapefruit sense to the hopping, a little bitter pith. Malt isn't noticeable but balances the hop in the sense that this beer is quite tasty and drinkable. A close runner to HopDevil, maybe a shade less smooth.

It's got the usual IPA color and a decent off-white head that sticks around a while. The smell and the taste are all hops. I like a hoppy beer when it's balanced by a nice malty flavor, but this one doesn't fit the bill. If the malt is there, the hops are beating it into submission with a baseball bat. If you like hoppy IPAs, check out selections by Alesmith, Stone, and Victory before picking up this one.

A fantastic looking IPA....a rich copper body topped with a creamy, thick head than clings patchlike to the glass. There is no subtlety anywhere in this ale...hops, hops, and more hops dominate the aroma, with just a smidgen of spicy fruit in the distance. The taste is again a fullpress assault of hop bitterness, but somewhere in the back there is a hint of caramel maltiness. The body is chewy and rich...which makes this beer a pleasure to drink.

Orange to light copper in color with a rocky white head. Floral and citrus hop aromas that will clear out your sinuses. You could wash your hair with this stuff and you'd smell like you used Herbal Essences. Thick mouthfeel; not a particularly high level of carbonation. A flash of caramel-like malt is quickly doused with buckets of hops, which carry you into the finish and beyond.

I definitely enjoy a good IPA, but this is a little unbalanced for my liking. I understand that the whole hop bonanza thing is the effect they were aiming for, and there's nothing wrong with that...just know what you're getting into before you drink this one. A great pick for the true hopheads.

Whoa freakin' Nellie! Yes, there are hops, as advertised. I swear, there were hop flowers rising from the rich, white, frothy head that sat upon a luscious copper foundation. Smell is, well, hops. Columbus. And lots of them. Taste is thick, like chewing on hop buds. Bitter! Some tea flavors (robust, like Darjeeling). After your taste buds and the beer warm up a bit, you can detect a bit of malty backbone, but it's the hops that hold this baby up. Nothing subtle here!

This beer poured a dark copper color and formed an nice white head that left some nice lace. A good deal of carbonation. The aroma was of hops and some citrus. The taste was definatley of hops, with some citrus and some fruit. A very good IPA, but since I prefer mine less sweet, I would have to give higher marks, personally, to Stone"s.

Pours a deep golden color, with a nice off-white head. On the nose there is a nice floral aroma as well as fruitiness from the hops. On the palate, there is a big hop bite, malts, citrus, and fruitiness. Overall… this is a hop-head’s delight. Hop Ottin’ stay’s true to the highly hopped American IPA’s...overall a great brew!

I haven't cared for any of Anderson Valley Brews and this is the last time I'm going to try any of them. I didn't care for Hop Ottin' IPA. The hoppy taste would was nice until that bitter after taste ruined it! Goodbye Anderson Valley Brewing Co.

I think my colleague "tigerpaws" has a little extra time on his hands to be researching bears with antlers...LOL. He is right on however. This is one of my favorite brews. This IPA is not overpowering, is extremely drinkable, yet hoppy enough for the HopHeads. A great hop aroma, without knocking you out with sugar or any other crap. A very solid, bare-bones IPA, and beautiful at that.

Zum wohl!

Amber golden color, long lasting head. Intense hop citrus nose. Oily body. Initial burst of hop bitterness melts into a chocolate like malt base while bitterness keeps it true to style. Sweet honey flavor in middle. Great balance

Pours out a nice clear, copper orange. Creamy off-white head that lasted all the way down the glass accompanied by a moderate floral aroma. Had a solid hop bite with some detectable malt in the background, and a definate note of honey. Not very complex but I still enjoyed it and would recommend it to others.

The beer has nice clarity for an IPA. Nice copper color. Medium head that sticks around. Very nice herbal hop tones in the aroma. There's a pungency in the taste that I don't like and don't think is appropriate. Medium to full bodied with a solid malt backing. I think this is a pretty average IPA. I've never been blown away by an IPA from AV.

Man do I love hops. This is another great offering from a great brewery. Pours a great golden orange color with a huge sticky head. Nice citrus and floral hop aromas. Strong hop kick in the mouth is immediate but it mellows to show a small malty underside. Balanced just enough for me. Crisp in the mouth and very drinkable. Just an all around great beer. I love IPA's and this is definitely one of my top 5.

Nice amber color, with a rich frothy head that sticks around 'til the end. Floral hop aroma (with perhaps a bit of honey?). Big hops flavor, with a crisp finish. It has an almost metallic tang in the finish. Good refreshing brew, with a punch at 7% abv.

I admit IPA is not my first choice usually. I do however enjoy it's unique very hoppy flavor. Well this is the king of hops, at least of the IPA'S that i have sampled. It works well and is very refreshing. If you're a hop head go for it. Excellent beer from a great brewery. Since posting this I have fallen in love with IPA's, and this one still measures up.

Presentation: 12 oz brown long-neck bottle with no freshness date. Blurb about the beer on the back label.

Appearance: Shiny copper hue with cushiony meringue head that leaves a patchy rings down the glass.

Smell: Rustic hop aroma with hints of flowers, tea and tobacco. Citric fruitiness from the hops with a mild nutty and pear-like fruit from the malt / yeast pairing to boot.

Taste: Medium slightly chewy malt body barely holds up the prickly pungent hop bitterness. A little slick oily mouth feel from the hops leaving a bitter sweet citric tea flavour. Fruity esters are perceptible with allusions of cherries and golden raisins, alcohol warms the body a bit also. Malt finds a way to peek out for a tad with a dry nutty and grainy cracker character. The finish is a faded grain and long drawn out tea like hop.

Notes: A true American IPA that gets straight to the point, no pussyfooting around for this brew … immediately to the hops! Malt hardly keeps a foothold against the hops yet still loans some character to this brew. Hate to say it … but this is another superb “hop head” IPA!
