Hop Ottin's a ridiculously smooth IPA. I didn't know that an IPA could be this smooth. It's got some caramel, bread and toffee flavors which somehow work OK with the hop power. The hops and a little pine come through in the nose and it's interesting how they lay pretty mellow upon sipping. Really great beer.

Had this as a session. Here's my simplified review of the canned offering; Super hot poolside gathering, 104 or more degrees easy. This beer went down effortlessly out of the can. Although not a most primary candidate to drink as a summer quencher, this went down smooth. I figure any beer released in a canned version is somehow worthy to be sipped as so. The bitter biting aftertaste worked well against the well-balanced malt sweetness. I need to try this in a glass for comparison. But based on drinkabity out of the can alone, I'm sure I'd enjoy it equally in a glass. Like others may tell you, this really is a great beer with which to introduce someone into the IPA style. Which means this is not as hop-head aggressive as it is refined and smooth. That said, there is a satisfying linger of bitterness. Nice.

A: Pours an alluring dark golden color accompanied by off white burly head. Immaculate retention that is a perfectly balanced and neither over coats the class nor leaves it barren.

S: A pleasant floral hop aroma does well to signify IPA, but the malts give it a more sweet characteristic. The hops seem to be missing that true wallop that is expected.

T: Brilliant essence from the hops provide a grapefruit or lemon type of citrusy flavor. The hop flavor coordinates very well with the sweetness of the malt to just provide the great taste of hops with subtle bitter bite on the back of the tongue.

M: Excellent carbonation does its job at making sure all of the flavors come through. Not as chewy as most other IPAs which makes it considerable smooth.

O: Anderson Valley delivers a top quality brew in this IPA. If you're a hop-head, this is a must. If you're just getting into IPAs and do not want to feel like you're putting whole hop cones in your mouth, then this is an superb choice.

Hop Ottin' is an excellent session IPA. I found 6-pack cans of this beer at Applejack's in Wheatridge, CO.

Visually, Hop Ottin' is golden caramel in color, darker than average IPAs, but fitting with the caramel sweetness in the beer.

When you lift the beer to your nose you'll smell pine, citrus, and earth.
This beer tastes like a good balance of hoppy bitterness with caramel maltiness... a good beginner IPA for those ready to take the plunge.

Pair this can with your favorite outdoor music festival and you'll be happy all day long.

12oz can poured in a pint glass. Purchased at Willow Park in Regina.

Hazy copper colour with a few carbonation streams. Off white head is 1/2 inch on the pour and recedes to a sticky mess at 1/4 inch with big gobs of lacing on the sides.

Nose is almost all citrus hops. Grapefruit and lemon with a little bit of caramel malt in the background.

Flavour isn't as strong as I had expected from the scent. Well balanced at the start. Even caramel and nutty malts and citrus hops at the start. Pretty smooth through the middle and moves into a strong, bitter leafy and citrus hop finish. Aftertaste is long and bitter.

Medium bodied with light carbonation.

A fairly drinkable brew. The only detractor is the long bitter aftertaste is a little too much for my liking. Overall a great brew.

Served from a can into a snifter purchased @ Fred Meyers in Portland, OR for $8.49. Couldn't pass this up at that price, I got to try a new beer and I really like canned micros.

A> A beautiful beer. It pours a hazy burnt orange with a stunning 2 finger thick head that has good retention. I can't find anything to critique about the look of this brew.

S> The smell is dominated by the hops, lemony and a little bit sour almost like a cheese, although strangely perfume like. Overall a pretty interesting and good bouquet.

T> Surprisingly strong malt presence that takes on butter like qualities. The hops are still a strong presence, and characterics of lemon in the aroma now show their more bitter qualities diving into the realms of citrus pith and pine. A sweet finish that mingles with the hops nicely.

M> A nice mouthfeel, a bit thick but I like a beer with a bit of "chew" to it. Appropriate carbonation for the style. This beer also has a wonderful oily feel from the resin of the hops. This brew just feels loaded with wonderful hops and malts and it really comes across.

O> Overall this beer is either really good or outstanding in every way you can break it down. In my opinion this is a really, really good IPA with a piney/pithy/cheesy hop profile and a nice English IPA like malt profile. Anderson Valley has really done a superb job of mixing both of these qualities, walking the thin red line that is balancing an IPA. A strong, sweet malt that somehow knows not to get in the way of the true star, the wonderful hops. In the end this beer just feels like the brewers stuffed it with wonderful malts and hops. Every aspect of this beer speaks to it's quality and the passion of the brewers. This is not my favorite IPA but it's a damn good beer and truly worthy of being called craft beer.
