16oz glass at Beer Revolution.
This beer appears a solid brownish-black, with subtle basal cola highlights, and one fat finger of puffy, and loosely foamy beige head, which leaves some air-pocket riddled snowface lace around the glass as it slowly bleeds away.
It smells of watery grapefruit juice, toasted and somewhat meaty bready caramel malt, a hard water stoniness, and leafy, piney, and weedy hops. The taste is more dull grapefruit and orange flesh notes, pithy caramel malt, wet brown toast, somewhat dank forest floor, and slightly perfumed florals.
The bubbles are average in their basic supportive bearing, the body a solid medium weight, and quite tight in its low-key smoothness. It finishes off-dry, the waning roasted character just ceding more ground to the stuck in neutral leafy, citrusy, and musty hops.
Not a bad Cascadian Dark Ale, the gamey, meaty character of the roast kept appreciably to a minimum, and the west coast hops at least noticeable and laudable in their persistence. Weird that there isn't more activity for this one around here (here being BA).

On tap at Churchkey in DC.
Pours dark brown with a one-finger light tan head an pretty good lacing.
The aroma is rather hoppy, mostly of the piney form, with roasted malt poking through.
Pretty good IBA flavor - a little more paler malt, caramel and such, than I like. Piney hop punch is substantial but not too assertive.
Medium-bodied with a mildly resinous mouthfeel and average carbonation.
A solid black IPA, but nowhere near some of the elite in the style.

Consumed January 19th, 2011 at Lucky Devils, Hollywood, CA.
Beer is black with deep mahogany highlights. A smooth, tan, one-finger head consists of bubbles ranging in size from almost-microscopic to very small.
Nose on this one is incredibly citric: lemons and grapefruit.
Flavor is two-pronged: moderate dark roasted, chocolatey malts lead and huge, long-lasting citric and piney bitterness follows and follows.
Mouthfeel is smoother than expected: almost creamy.
A good "black IPA" ought to be like having a sublimely good black and tan: this one is like mixing a Guinness with a double IPA. The roasted malt character sort of gets lost in the mix.

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a very deep brown color with a thick one finger head of a tan color. The head has a fantastic level of retention, very slowly fading to leave a moderate level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is rather light but is heaviest of a sweeter chocolate aroma mixed with some roasted malt and a moderately potent pine hop smell. Other sweet aromas of caramel as well as a bit of a grassy and herbal smell.
Taste – The taste begins a sweet caramel and chocolate flavor mixed with a light roasted malt taste. Along with these flavors are some very light pine hop tastes. The pine grows slightly stronger as the taste advances with it being joined by some other hop flavors of a grassy and earthy nature. Overall the hop flavors remain on the lighter side with the sweet roasted malt and chocolate flavors remaining stronger overall. A tiny bit of a grapefruit flavor as well as an increase in the sweeter flavors of the brew come at the very end, leaving a sweet chocolaty and more lightly hopped flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. Both are nice for the dark and sweeter flavors of the brew all the while still allowing the lighter hop flavors to be well represented.
Overall – A little on the sweeter side for a black IPA in my opinion, but overall very drinkable. A little more hop and a little less sweetness would have won me over a bit more, but overall it is one to at least give a try to if you get the opportunity

1-finger, brown tinged, dark tan head, layered lacin nice. conc, burnt amber / black color, clear brown in light. lots big citrus hops, pine, tropical fruit (lychee, big floral apricot). malt plays supporting role, not really noticeable, perhaps touch toasted malt.
bitter hop and burnt grain bite. somewhat buttery hop character somehow, mor dank herbal tha buttery i guess. dank herbaceous and bitter hops lead flavor. roast, burnt toast in finish, touches of toasted whole grain bread. tropical fruit and citrusy hops here in flavor, but muted by roast malt, realy wish it hadnt; citrus more than trop8ical, meyer lemon zest,really loses floral character. fairly light bodied, would be down right quaff, if not for harsher herbal and bitter notes; perhaps even a bit too thin seeming at times. herbal vhop lean towards burnt pine tar, touch menthol and lots "hemp" oil dankness.
once again i find the dark / roast malt getting in way andharshing up an otherwise wonderfully hoppy beer. not bad, but bit cacophonous.

A: Poured jet black with good carbonation and a nice tannish head
S: Some coffee, grainey, light hops
T: Black malt, watery, the citrus hops were subdued, old coffee note on the end. Like this beer fell flat on its face from beginning to end.
M: Sordove bland, thin, hops were missing on the entire beer
D: Average at best. Not one of the AVBC best.
