look: 4 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 2.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 2.5

Appearance: Served up a hazed, golden-amber body with a medium-sized, creamyish, white head.

Smell: A mingled, mixed aroma of waterlogged spices atop the base malt melange.

Taste: Initially tangy, but also a bit sugary. Slightly grainy. Some appleskin and apricot fruitiness. Some perceived 'heat' from the ginger, a little anise, too. Slight bitterness. Remains tangy, vaguely fruity until the drying finish with some lingering spice.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: If I were to line up my saisons in order of preference, Mowkeef would be right near the end.

Reviewed from notes; originally 9/17/11.

Appearance is a cloudy orange color with two fingers of white head.

Bubblegum with some hints of peppercorn, and some clove.

Follows the nose with bubblegum, clove, black pepper and some cracked grain notes.

Light bodied wuth moderate carbonation and a prickly feel.

Pretty nice and certainly refreshing but the bubblegum is a little overwhelming.

1.5 finger head with nice amount of lacing. Hazy golden body

S: nice Belgian yeast and sweet aroma with some peppery notes but overall mild.

T: not very sweet in the flavor. Actually a little bland. Mostly just the standard Belgian yeast and light lemony flavor.

M: light to medium body and light carbonation. Bubbles a little in your mouth in the finish.

Overall: a disappointing saison. Definitely doesn't compare to the others in the genre.

On draft at Blind Tiger, NYC.

Poured a medium copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured a light caramel and smooth esters.

The taste consisted of round malts, a grassy hop and a pleasant soft ester.

The mouthfeel was toward the fuller side of the style.

Overall a tasty ale. Not too true to form for a saison however.

On tap at Pizza Port San Clemente

A: Clear light brown color with a 1/2 finger bone white head.

S: Definitely has a bit of spiciness along with a rich nutty smell. Some faint malts as well.

T: Not much about this beer screams "saison" to me, but it's pretty solid. Toasted nuts, caramel, a bit of ginger and indistinguishable spices and some roasted malt. Very drinkable.

Draft at Small Bar in San Diego.

Pours a hazy dark golden orange color with a one finger  frothy white head that very slowly fades into a lasting ring. Large spots of lace left behind.

Earthy aroma with subtle zesty spice countering funky saison yeast, bread and light fruit notes.  Hints of clove, banana, apple, pear, straw and grass.

Medium bodied with a nice balance of subtle, earthy funk, zesty spice and light fruit.  Hints of grass and straw along with some pear and banana. Spices are there for balance but done subtly.  Could use more funky yeast instead of the strong bread character that it possesses but its still refreshing and drinkable with a well masked ABV.

Served on-tap at Rattle N Hum in New York, NY

A: Pours a hazy medium golden yellow in color with minimal amounts of visible carbonation and some lemon yellow highlights. The beer has a finger tall off-white head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of floral hops and just a touch of yeast spiciness.

T: Upfront there is a light flavor of pale malts with some light to moderate flavors of yeast spiciness (black pepper and clove). There is a light to moderate amount of floral flavors from the hops. Very light amounts of bitterness which fades very quickly.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: I prefer my saisons with just a touch of barnyard funk or sourness in them and this one was just lacking that element though it was quite easy to drink. Not as much complexity in the smell and taste as I would like. Think I would not get it again.

On-tap at Idle Hands, New York, NY

A: The beer is hazy golden yellow in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that has excellent retention properties and left lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are light to moderately strong aromas of floral hops in the nose.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and has flavors of floral hops—marigolds seem to stand out in particular. Notes of spices are also noticeable, while the finish has hints of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a short finish.
O: The beer is refreshing and very easy to drink but it lacks complexity in the taste and could use a bit of sourness in the nose.
