Anderson Valley is a good name in beer but this is a miss. Disappointing as bourbon barrel aged stouts go and generally as craft beer goes. It's meh, it's almost OK, but it's not at all memorable. It's mild and round and has no real distinguishing character except for a bit of wood taste which isn't particularly good. It is lacking in substance and almost tastes diluted. Almost has a touch of that taste from the bottom of a glass of cola with ice when the cola has been watered down by all of the melted ice. And it's a diet cola at that. And I think that's actually the bourbon taste trying to come through, which doesn't speak well for the bourbon. It has kind of a cheap taste, yet costs plenty. Smells decent, with a nice chocolate frosting note. Smooth. It would be interesting to know what they were going for with this beer. Would not by again. Would not recommend. Needs to go back to the drawing board.

Pours and off very very deep opaquer brown with creamy tan head that held well. Thin collar. Aroma is some dark chocolate, vanilla and caramel sweetness. Taste is much the same with no noticeable bourbon or oak presence until the very end. Creamy mouthfeel with low carbonation and a body just on the thin side of thick.

Appearance: black in color, 3/4 inch head, low carbonation, opaque
Smell: light chocolate and roasted malt
Taste: oak, chocolate, toffee, cocoa--a bit of Tootsie Roll taste
Mouthfeel: moderate carbonation, heavy body, sweet with oakiness
Overall: I was impressed with the oakiness of this beer at first, but unfortunately the taste did not carry all the way through this beer. It was still strong enough, but I wish the flavor was a bit stronger. Still I would get this one again if I saw it on tap. Not quite what I would call good, but certainly one of the better brews from Anderdon Valley.
