Poured into a snifter out of a 22oz bomber.

Pours jet black with a one finger light tan had that settles to a fairly thick ring around the top of the beer. Pretty good lacing on the sides of the glass and some splotchiness on top.

Bourbon is really smacks you in the face in the aroma with the vanilla character being prominent. Wood underlies this along with dark chocolate.

Lots of vanilla and wood char in the taste almost as if a shot of bourbon has been dropped into the beer. There is more roast and coffee evident here compared to the aroma along with dark chocolate. Moderate bitterness and a bit of a watery mouthfeel leads to a sticky finish.

Overall, this beer has a lot going for it but I feel like it just lacks the body to be great. Everything starts out good but kind of craps out midway through. I would get this again, though.

Served on-tap over the weekend at The Dive Bar in Worcester, MA. Notes taken at time of consumption.

A- Pitch black pour to a pint glass with a tan-brown cap of foam atop the brew. Head rises to about a finger high with a creamy texture. Good retention but eventually falls to a frothy ring with some spotty lace drizzle down the glass.

S- Cocoa maltiness up front in an aroma lacking strength for a Stout. Roasty and caramel malts with just a tiny hint of Bourbon barrels.

T- As with the aroma, just lacks a certain character of Stouts. Barrel presence is also a bit low with just tiny hints of whiskey and vanilla. Toasty, cocoa and roasted malts with some caramel make up a bulk of the flavor. Eventually some coffee, mild black currant fruitiness and cereal grain hints come out. Mild soy-cola feel.

MF- Silky, lighter end body with a moderate level of carbonation. Feels a bit thin overall and lacking of texture.

Just seems a bit faint in both the aroma and taste. Well balanced but nothing really jumps out on the palate to carry the beer forward. Gets better with warmth and time but never really reaches that high. There are just too many good Bourbon stouts out there I suppose.

Had this on 2013-12-27 in Columbia, PA

A - Opaque black with a 2-finger dark tan head a very nice lacing.

S - Sweet bourbon, nutty, vanilla, mild roasted malt. Pleasant. Not strong.

T - Initially some raisin bread sweetness, vanilla, cocoanut and bourbon. Then a fair amount of coffee and char. Finishes with a good balance of residual sweetness and roasty bitterness. The coffee and char flavors, while fairly apparent mid-taste, don't linger into the aftertaste. There also bourbon alcohol flavor present in the finish in balance with the other flavors; in other words, subdued.

M - Light-medium body and carbonation. Thinner than you'd expect for a stout.

O - First impression is this is more like a mildly barrel aged porter. Enjoyable but doesn't knock it out of the park. It's got some nice flavors for a 7% brew but I think I'd rather have their Oatmeal Stout. Of interest, my wife liked this more than me particularly because it was lighter flavored and had a lower ABV. While I was looking for MORE, she liked the simpler, lighter bourbon stout flavors on display with this brew.
