12oz bottle received in the recent Under A Hundred BIF from tburkhart. Thanks Tim!

Cool label, poured into standard pint. Very little head, no retention. There is a moderate carbonation level. Looks good.

First smell brings the coffee and roasted malt forward. Upon tasting, you get a bit of coffee but then a sour/rotten vinegary flavor takes over. No body whatsoever. This is one of the weakest stouts I've encountered. Couldn't finish it.

12oz bottle poured into a nonic pint glass

A: Looks like a standard stout. Chocolate brown with a thin mocha head. No lacing

S: Roasted malt, coffee and some weird nutty smell. Slight alcohol aroma

T: Mostly roasted malt, but some coffee and chocolate. Slightly weird aftertaste, kinda metallic

M: Medium bodied, creamy and creamy. Good amount of carbonation for the style

D: Decent drinking stout. Flavors seem a bit off, but I was able to finish the bottle with no problems. Worth a try if you stumble upon it

Served in a Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Still feeling the love from the post-DLD death march here. Damn, how the hell much beer did I buy? This bit pours a black coffee, with about the same amount of head one would expect to find topping a cup o' joe (i.e. pretty much none). The nose comprises plenty o' that java, along with some rather minor notes of molasses and roasted malts. A dash of smoke may or may not hang in the air. (It's a surprise!) The taste is pretty similar, with the dominant coffee bits, but a slight cola taste makes its way in as well, along with those roasted malts and a very small twang of fruitiness in the very back of the room. The body is a solid medium, with a moderate carbonation and a thinner feel than I would like in such a stout. Overall, a decent coffee stout, but unfortunately not enough is there to sing any real praises.

pours a rich, deep, coffee black (good, thick, Peet's type coffee, not bad, burnt, Star*ucks kind) with a tan head with tiny bubbles. Limited head has almost no retention whatsoever.

Coffee / chocolate aroma all over. Something else, too ... maybe toffee? Smells wonderful and makes me want to dive right in. Until that last scent just before diving in, which brings a bit of a burnt (there's that Star*ucks scent) to the nose.

That burnt scent just barely comes through to the mouth, but only at the very back. Otherwise, great taste of coffee all over the place on this. A fine coffee stout, to be sure.

However, that burnt acidic roastiness is getting in the way a little too much. Just a bit of a problem here. It seems to provide a roughness across the back of the tongue. Just a weird thing overall.

The burn is just a little rough. Can't get past it to drink much more of this. Definitely the result of the beans, not the coffee itself.

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

A - Nice and dark, held it up to a light and could not see through it. Maybe a 1/4 inch of tan head.

S - I smell coffee, some alcohol and chocolate, and something else, not sure what.

T - Wait a second, what the hell was that? Sour water? Cat piss? Jesus, there was hardly any coffee or any flavor in that, or if it there is it is masked by the horrible sour taste. Right now I am trying to figure out if this or Budweiser Chelada is worse. When I am done writing here, I am immediately pouring this down the drain and may possibly have to take a hot shower with a brillo pad. I feel very violated right now.

M - Water. Sour, tasteless water.

D - None. Down the drain. NOW!

Mishawaka Brewing Co., I really hope you didn't plan on this beer coming out like this. Your beers has been slipping for years, but this is unacceptable. I wouldn't sneak this into a hobo's stick and bindle, that's how bad it is.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a Sam Adams BL glass, the beer pours dark brown with a huge tan head. This bottle was a foamer, not long after I opened the bottle a slow stream of foam came out. The aroma was all coffee and roasted malt. Unfortunately it just gets worse from there. I can taste some coffee in this brew, but I taste a lot more sourness than anything else. And it wasn't a good sour flavor either. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it was a bit slick but also thin. Drinkability isn't good, but I figure this has to be an infected bottle. I'd like to revisit this brew, but it won't be anytime soon.

Poured out of 12oz bottle. Mishawaka Brew Co. lets see how you do with this one.

A- Pours a deep dark brown color...almost black. Held to the light there some light brown hues on the sides of the glass. No head at all. And I did a hard pour...this doesn't look good. Some tannish looking swirls on the top of the beer. No lacing.

S- Interesting smell on this one. I almost smell a irish cream in this beer. That along with a chocolate frosting aroma make up a huge part overall on the aroma. Some light coffee roast in there. Not much of anything else. Kind of a weird smell. It's not bad really but just weird for the style of beer I guess.

T- This beer is infected I think. The front end is soured on this beer. Oh holy crap! This is not good. Roasted coffee upfront with this as well. I mean big coffee taste on this. Almost like someone threw coffee grounds in this beer. Light chocolate flavor in the background. Nothing in this is balanced but just a mess....a soured infected mess!

M- Light mouthfeel. Carbonation is lacking in this beer. Sour coffee grounds are the flavors left on the palate and in the aftertaste. This beer feels watery overall. Just a big sour puckery presence left throughout the mouthfeel.

D- This beer is a drainpour....second one of the night. Stay away from this one. Mishawaka Brew Co. you screwed this one up. I would call this the mix between Triple Bock and Cave Creek...heh.

If you're a fan of good coffee or coffee drinks like Irish Coffee, you'd probably enjoy this one.

A= nice and dark, a dark tan head about 1-2 fingers.

S= like a nice Irish Coffee made with typically slightly-overcooked coffee. A nice aroma of floral hops and some bitters.

T= similar to the scent, but a much better coffee taste than many of the new non-alcohol chilled bottled coffee drinks sold at convenience stores. Think in terms of good "real coffee" that's set on a heating pad for 15 minutes, then mixed with good hops florals and some bitters and a slight alcohol taste, then chilled. Nice.

M= like the coffee I had at a convenience store recently, slightly flat and mildly coffee-bitter burnt but with a nice almost minty hops floral aftertaste on the tongue.

D= very nice if you enjoy real coffee.

This was a fun gift included in my SS package from raznug.

A- Body is a very dark brown that is somewhat transparent with a little bit of red sifting through. Pours with 1 /2 finger foamy light tan head that subsides quickly.

S- The nose is definitely of java/coffee. The problem is that it's that cheap coffee that is offered at church gatherings or that you can have for free when you are waiting for your car to get inspected. Yep...nose is of cheap, black coffee.

T- Much like the smell. There is a slight presence of waxy chocolate in their also, but its mostly the cheap coffee flavor. Some roasted malt comes through for the finish and nothing lingers.

M- Medium carbonation and medium body...more of a porter weight/mouthfeel than a stout.

D- Not impressive. It's not torture to drink...but it's not enjoyable either. Not really a great beer.

Bottle from Keg Liquor, IN.

Poured clear dark brown color with a huge brown frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate ground coffee, chocolate aroma. Medium body with a sour texture. Medium roasted coffee sour flavor with a medium sour finish of long duration.

This beer was not good and I hope it was one bad bottle and not a pattern.

Nice color, great smell, then it all goes downhill. The smell is great like a nice cup of coffee with a malty backbone. The color is a dark brown approaching black. The taste is rather harsh. It does have some stout flavor, but the rest of it reminds me of something a little like chlorine. It makes me think of when I would get dunked by the bigger kids in the city pool. Compared to the initial taste, the aftertaste isn't so bad. I do think it is a nice attempt at something unique, it just does not hit me well. I don't mean to tear it apart, but it needs a bit more sweetness in my mind. Maybe it's the coffee that makes it so dirty tasting. I'm going to visit this brewery, so hopefully it will taste better on draft.

I must say that this "Java Stout" is by no means a traditional stout. Light carbonation, nice light head, sweet yet coffee bitterness comes through.

As easy as it may be to tear this beer down, I would rather note that those who may enjoy coffee and a dark beer here and there will probably find this stout to be worth a taste.

I personally found that this beer paired up very well with dark chocolate. Whether bar chocolate or Dark chocolate cookies, this pairing works.

IMHO pick up a bottle when you grab a mix pack. Just remember, this is no stout. If anything, this feels like a "Java Bock"

Pours black with a thin tan head that dissipates rather soon after pouring. Nose is: coffee. Surprise! Flavor is a quick hit of coffee, and there isn't much else following up. The flavor profile seems to evaporate rather quickly. Feel is extremely thin on the liquid. For a stout, I'd expect a much heartier body. Carbonation seems lower and is an odd mix with the thin body. A decent at best beer (with a cool label though!) Thicken the liquid profile and add some complexity, and things will be looking up.

Thanks to tburkhart for this one.

Poured from a 12oz bottle.

A= Black with a 1 finger tan head.
S= Hazelnut and coffee but mostly hazelnut.
T= Starts with a nice coffee taste but quickly turns into a sour apple/bitterness, finishes on the dry side.
M= Thin, no real body to this.

This tastes like an irish dry stout with hazelnut flavored coffee added. I would like to see more body and malt.

Presentation: Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into an Imperial pint glass. Label depicts a coffee-bean faced being with a cup of coffee in one hand and a beer in the other. No visible brewed-on date.

Appearance: Pours with one finger of rich and creamy tan head. This settles slowly to about half its original size, leaving behind thick, viscous lacing. The beer itself is nearly black and fully opaque.

Smell: Smells more like coffee and less like beer. Sweet chocolate and cream, with little to no bitterness or malt smell.

Taste: Once again, coffee flavors seem to be more prevalent than beer flavors. Creamy with a little coffee bite. An almost basic tang. All in all, a little watery, especially compared to the anticipated flavor based upon smell.

Mouthfeel: Average level of carbonation. Body is good.

Drinkability: I like it, but I don't love it. A very nice coffee flavor, but lacking in the stout department. If the stout flavors were a little more developed, this could be a wonderful beer.

Pours a deep, dark brown with reddish hints on the edges. A tan head that dissipates almost as quickly as it pours. It smells strongly of coffee and light hint of chocolate. It tastes of black coffee and bitter chocolate. Much like the smell. It gives way to a sweeter aftertaste but still a little bitter. Light mouthfeel. It doesn't hang around too much after you swallow it. It's fairly drinkable but you won't want to move onto a lighter tasting beer afterwards. I can't imagine the tastebuds would adjust well.

Had this on tap at Mishawaka Brewpub in a nonic pint glass on 4/17/08. This is their new beer to bottle as well.

A - Comes out the color of black coffee. Super dark with a small mocha colored head that sits on top before slowly dissipating and leaving a small amount of lacing.

S - light hint of chocolate and coffee. As the beer warmed up, I got a bigger hint of coffee roasted scent but nothing I would call big. There was also a surprising and, IMHO, out of place hint of lemon.

T - I have to say that this had a very odd and not tasty flavor profile for a coffee stout. The first thing that hit me was a very sharp lemon taste that just does not seem to fit in at all. Only after some time does the lemon even remotely start to fade away, allowing the coffee flavors to come through. However, at this point, the coffee is undesired as it just does not mix well with the lemon. Did not care for this at all and the aftertaste was an odd mix of lemon and coffee as well with the lemon dominating.

MF - lots of carbonation and a slight graininess to it. The lemon flavors sort of make my mouth pucker and leave a light tingly feeling. Really kinda rough especially for the style.

D - Overall, not what I'd call a coffee stout at all as it was more a lemon stout (?) with a hint of coffee than a coffee stout. I would never order this out at the bar again or would buy it in bottles. I especially would never grab it for a coffee stout as this was one of the worst ones that I've ever had.
