22oz bottle poured into a pint glass

Pours a nice, dark amber. Nose offers very smooth malts. Taste is a smooth malt offering with hints of yeast. Very crisp on the palate, very carbonated. Overall not bad, especially at $4 for the 22oz at Whole Foods.

The Railhouse Brewery Track #1 Lager is not very good. The appearance is nice clear amber with thin off-white head that is not lacing. The scent very weak malt and a bitter hop. The taste is primarily a bitter taste from start to finish. The mouthfeel is light and decent carbonation. Overall it is not a decent beer and I would not session this....would rather do a coors lite.

I love the fact that Roanoke is pumping out some quality brew. That said, I can't just go "homer" and give this beer a above average rating because of where it comes from.

Lets face it, this is a VERY average brown ale. Clearly intended not to offend. Milder than Newcastle. I have had it on three occasions from three different establishments and each time came away with the opinion of... well nothing special here.

Not that I was hoping for some over the top IBU bomber or malt monster... but was a little let down. maybe their future offerings though. I'm probably not their ideal customer though.

This would however make for a great session beer, and that may be just what springs their company in this area of relative lack of love or support for any thing other than BMC and mass consumption.

Best wishes to the new brewery.

Beer Review:

A= nutty brown, a little darker than Newcastle but much less so than say a Sam Smith, pretty clear.

S= sweet malt, grains, small hops

T= mild, almost tea like taste, with little hop bite or linger aftertaste, the next sip comes quickly and easily.

M&D= The beer shines here. A great beer to have more than a few with. A beer that could allow the consumer to have a few and not place him/ her into an alchol funk for the evening. A true "pub" brew.

Overall pretty good job.

Clean copper color with a thin head that clings to the surface as a spotty cap. Rich, clean aroma...pear, nuts, chocolaty bread. Sweet, nutty, toasted bready malt flavors. A bit too bitter, which distracts from the maltiness. Earthy grain, caramel, and tea. Missing the overall finesse and cohesiveness of a well made German-style lager. Not terrible though...

From bomber to nonic pint glass on 2/26/11
*From notes

A: Rich amber brilliance. 2+ finger head and pretty lacing that doesn't stick.

S: Almond and peanuts. Slightly metallic on the nose too, with hints of vanilla and alcohol.

T: Immediate earthy copper. Traces of mild smoke on the mid-palate, with a toasty and quite malty finish.

M: Fairly oily and slick. It's got reasonable weight, and the carbonation is well integrated.

O: This is simply a beer. It's not special or extreme, just something to quench your thirst, or sip on when you just want a brew. Don't go out of your way for it, but if you're in Roanoke, make a point to try it, as all the locals (at least the ones I know) are extremely proud to have their name on it.

On a side note, I've also had this on tap. I can honestly say that Track 1 is slightly heartier and richer from the keg.

I was shocked to see something I didn't even know existed in bombers at Harris Teeter today, from an unknown brewery to boot. Looks interesting enough.

Pours a dark copper with a thin cream colored head that has little staying power. Pure clarity, little carbonation visible. Nose is pure chocolate malt with caramel and nut tones. Decent.

Sweet malt with minimal balance, a pleasant nutty finish with a touch of vanilla or toffee or something frisky, and a mellow aftertaste that leaves you wanting more. Just a tasty beer, really. Nothing fancy, nothing spectacular, but heavily sessionable and effortless.

Interesting first offering from these Virginia brewers. Worth checking out if you are looking for something quaffable.

Poured from a bomber into a tall pint glass. Pours a nice red color with a little white head, but dissipates very quickly. Smells of darkly roasted caramelized malt, not much else. Has a very bland taste, a little dark malt, but watery. Light bodied beer has a nice finish, but is a little fizzy. Overall a pretty average beer.

Decent appearance - a little paler than I would have expected but ok looking in the glass. Decent head.

The smell was bad - skunky bad - serious problem with this one.

Taste was right there with the smell but since the smell was so bad I was prepared.

Bottom line on this one was - UNDRINKABLE.

Bad news here folks.

A: Really nice looking reddish brown, towering three finger off white head. Nice sheet of lacing to the bottom of the glass.

S: Almost a nutty aroma, maybe almonds. Sweet malts come through, vanilla and caramel.

T: Rich caramel and vanilla carry through to the taste, some toasty bread. Finishes with earthy, almost metallic hops.

M: Nice oily, mid bodied beer.

O: Nice simple beer, very cleanly executed and balanced.

Type is English Brown Ale not American Brown Ale... Request has been made to BeerAdvocate to change type

Just got back from Annie Moore's Pub in Roanoke VA... Tried the new Brew from Roanoke's newest Micro Brew... (only a few in town)... This is my first time adding a beer to The Advocate so if anyone has any other info please add it...

Had one pint from tap...

A: Brownish red... very Newcastle colored... very little head and lacing

S: Malt, nuts and a smokeyness

T: Taste like it smells.... A little like Newcastle but not as bitter.... There is a nice sweetness that makes you want more... Very clean with no aftertaste

M: Med to light in body... very refreshing

D: Very drinkable.... went down very easy... Roanoke needs to support this brew..

To add I had a Belhaven Scottish Ale after the Track 1 and wish I had had another Track 1.... My buddy started with Miller Lite (he likes lighter beer) had one sip of my Track 1 and had 2.... Track 1 is the only Beer they have at this time... but I'm looking forward to more... Support Local Brews

Nice session beer. Poured into an Aventinus Weizen glass, a clear copper color with ruby highlights. medium bubbly antique white head with less than average lacing and head retention. Mild but pleasant malty aroma.

Surprisingly strong taste. Malty AND smoky taste. I was surprised at the strength of the smokiness. Very tasty brew. I had it with dinner...crab legs and bread. Would have been even better with cheese snacks. The smokiness is a definite asset. Some mild hops bitterness in the finish as well.

Mouthfeel is fine for a lager....light but not watery. This is a nice light brew with a strong flavor. If you would like to try a smoky beer, this is a very approachable one.

Wow! Been a long time since I poured one down the kitchen sink.

Poured into a normal beer tumbler. Decent head. Color was fine and predictable I suppose. I didn't detect anything amiss with the smell really. However, the first taste was a total surprise. SOUR! I'm not talking lemon sour. I'm talking really bad beer sour; like something's wrong with this beer sour.

I discussed this find with a co-worker thinking maybe it was a bad batch or something. He said he tried a Railhouse brew and didn't think much of it either.

I called the company and left a message and also sent an email. Putting myself in their place, I would like to know if there's a potential problem with one of my brews. It's been several days and I have not heard back. I suppose this is what they think a lager is supposed to taste like. And for all I know 100 years ago it is what lager tasted like.

Don't waste your $$$ on this one.

The worse part was that I found it in the grocery store along with some other local favorites of mine. I hate to think that a potential craft beer convert would try this beer and think this is what craft beer is all about. It would definitely be a turn-off.
